no matter what, do not buy lg or best buy

We have an LG refrigerator that is 13 months old and it sounds like a helicopter about to take off. We called Best Buy to seek out a service person. They TOLD US FRANKLY they will not provide the name of anyone unless we bought their long-term service agreement and they further told us that LG has no representatives in this area, although I HAVE A WARRANTY ON SEVERAL PARTS INCLUDING THE COMPRESSOR WHICH IS ABOUT TO GO OUT, FROM THE SOUND.

DO NOT BUY LG, DO NOT BUY FROM BEST BUY, DO NOT BUY LG AND DO NOT BUY FROM BEST BUY.... DON'T EVEN GO NEAR THERE. BEST BUY HAS ALSO NOT PROVIDED SERVICE FOR THE TV WE PURCHASED A FEW MONTHS BACK AND IT WAS ALSO UNDER WARRANTY. JUST DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH BEST BUY OR LG.

Best Buy is notorious for failing to honor their service agreements when you do buy them, so don't think you would be any better off if you had spent the extra money. When we were at a party, a friend of mine brought up her frustrations with her Best Buy service agreement, and no less than seven other people chimed in with similar stories! She finally asked, "has anyone here had a good experience with Best Buy's service agreements?" And no one had. I don't know if this is a national problem, but it sure is a problem where I live.

Home Depot and its cousins in the big-box store category are what are called "best value" or "operationally efficient" companies. Their success lies in the fact that they can offer the lowest price. They work with suppliers to get the lowest prices that they pass on to the customers. They also keep other costs low including costs of labor. That means that overall, they don't hire truly knowledgeable staff to properly service plant-buying customers nor enough staff over enough hours to properly maintain the plant material. For those customers who appreciate "best value" and think of it as the most important criteria in purchasing plants, then Home Depot and the rest are certainly the places to buy. It behooves you (and other "best value" customers) to do your homework first -- read as much as you can about the plants you want to buy (yes, that means knowing what you want to buy first and what plants are right for your garden). It also means that you should know when their shipments come in to be there before the plants have a chance to sit around without proper care for too long. Roger's -- and other good independent nurseries -- are what are called "customer intimate" types of companies. Their focus is on taking care of the customer (WELL BEYOND just saying "good morning" and "thank you for shopping"). They have extra costs that "best value" companies usually shave on, particularly when it comes to staffing. "Customer intimate" companies hire intelligent employees and more of them. Those costs are offset by the higher prices you'll find at such places. Customers that want top-notch service are willing to pay the higher prices. If you -- and other nursery shoppers -- need to know what are the correct plants, how to properly plant those plants, how to take care of those plants, and what to do with the plants if you have problems, then Roger's and other good independents are the place to shop. The extra price you pay is for the service. Consider it a tip at a good restaurant. The quality of the plants at both Home Depot and Roger's is the same. And not. Home Depot, and most other big box stores, pretty much buy from the same main suppliers as the independents. What happens to the plants soon after arrival, though, can make a big difference. Of course, Home Depot and the others big-boxers offer life-time guarantees: no matter what happens to the plant or why, they'll replace it or refund the purchase price. That means they don't want to bother helping you figure out the reason why the plant died and it's a small consolation for a lot of sweat that you've put into the plant. Joe

Thanks everyone. I've decided to buy from Sears. They had the lowest prices on the LG Waveforce washer and dryer (maybe a President's day sale?), and free installation, delivery charge of $65. Yes, there was sales tax, but still everything together was less than other retailers (the two other retailers listed in this thread were $75-$125 higher on the washer alone). I'm not really one to want to haggle over price by finding the best deal and getting a price match, I was more concerned with customer service. I also decided on Sears because I have gotten appliances from them in the past and have been happy enough with their service. I did not purchase any extended warranty, LG offers 1 year on parts and labor (I talked with LG, this includes electronics), and 10 yrs. on motor. It's a little intimidating buying such big ticket items online- I had my husband at the computer with me, I triple checked my cart to make sure I had the right washer and gas dryer! Thanks. Barbara

bntroberts-Do you own this machine? I would like to reply to your points so please bear with me. 1. I wasn't planning on stacking things on top of my washer, so the fact that it doesn't have a porcelain top doesn't bother me. After all it sits on a spiffy stand with a pull out drawer. 2. We have tried the steam wash, but we certainly do not use it with every load. I am impressed with the amount of water it DOES NOT use. That, combined with the fact that I only have to use tablespoons of detergent was the real reason we purchased this machine. I appreciate the replies to this thread, and we did buy the the washer. We are currently using it with our GE dryer and have had no problems. bntroberts, if you read my original post, it was a question regarding the use of the LG washer with a non-LG dryer. No where did I mention or ask for opinions on this machine nor did I mention how much I hoped to save on our energy bills. Extensive research was done prior to this purchase, and I'll admit I was its biggest skeptic. I have since fell in love with my washer and to have it called a "big piece of crap." feels like a hit below the belt. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion but they should be expressed in a mature manner.

Alex, a good friend of mine just bought a Maytag Bravo washer with the internal water heater. She says it definitely boosts the water temp, and she is very happy with the washer. This is her first HE washer and she considered buying a FL, but saw my Bravos one day and liked it so well, she ended up buying (a newer) one herself. She's been calling me every few days to rave about it, LOL.

I will never, ever purchase anything from Best Buy again. The last time I bought 2 computers and the the inept sales person lied to me several times regarding hardware and software stuff. I knew much more than he and kept telling him thet what he stated was incorrect. Anyway, they financed it interest free for a year. I went to the store to make a payment on the due date and they refused it. They said I must mail it or pay by phone or online. I tried online but they were 2 hours difference and said it was too late and I would be charged a late fee + interest. They said I could pay by phone but would have to pay a $15 service handling fee. As far as I'm concerned they are crooks and don't deserve my business.

Just go the LG website and click on support at the top of the page. Then click on Serice Center under the LG Service topic. Put your zip code in the box and pick "refrigerators" from the pull down menu. I was able to find 3 local service centers in about 2 minutes.

The internet is a wonderful thing. :)

I don't expect big box stores to service appliances unless I bought a service contract from them. Even then, they just farm it out and the best they will do is give you the number of the place that takes care of thier service contracts. Whether they have good service contracts or good companies to back them up is another matter. None are capable of appliance or TV repairs, HD, Lowes, Circut City or any other type of large store except Sears.

When I needed service for my whirlpool Refrig. I called whirlpool. They gave me the names of local authorized service centers. Keep your warantee info for large purchases, including owners manuals. They always have numbers to call for service and warantee information. If you don't have those things just a do search for the manufacturers website and you will almost always find info t there, also.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, but I just want to offer a different perspective. I know LG gets a lot of grief on the appliance forum, but frankly, we've had a ss SXS LG refrigerator for about the same time (roughly 13 months) and it does its job just fine. No weird noises, no compressor problems, no rotting veggies that aren't past their prime anyway. We also have an LG steamwasher front load washing machine and dryer that we bought in September. So far, no problems.

We bought them all from Best Buy because they had the best price. We got a REALLY good deal on the washer/dryer because the washer was an open box sale and they gave us a deal on a new dryer since they didn't have the set as open box. Did NOT get their extended warranty because it's a waste of $$$.

"LG", what a great marketing move for "Lucky Gold Star" a company not historically known for Quality. Sorry to hear your having fridge problems. My DH refuses to buy any LG products, maybe he is right.

Oh Patricia, sounds like you are having a horrible time with BB. How frustrating! Those big box stores do not always have the brightest folks working for them.

DON'T GIVE UP!!! Try calling LG directly as Sue ct suggests and see if they can help you. Our LG SXS had issues with the ice maker making only crushed ice. We called the LG service center and they promptly sent out a local repair company who repaired it. We never even considered contacting the appliance store we bought it from.

I know LG gets trashed here, but my friend who is an appliance repairman likes their products and recommended the brand to us so we now own the fridge and DW (from Best Buy). Kinda helps that he will repair any of them for free if we have any problems after the warranty expires :)

i have a buzzing in my lg microwave when it first starts up. i called them directly and after sending proof-of-purchase they sent me a form to return with labels from the microwave as well as receipt from a new one and they will reimburse me. they don't even want the old one back. i actually just bought the new unit last week...at Best Buy, coincidentally. But if I have another problem don;t need them in the loop.
