MR 16 or GU10 halogen: Help, please!

My kitchen reno is on hold b/c I can't determine what to do about lighting -- I feel like I'm missing some basic information that makes the decision a no-brainer, and yet I've done a lot of research. The main problem, I think, is that I'm getting competing advice from my GC and others.

Briefly, I need to use recessed lighting as task lighting on each side of my stove, where I do most of my prep. This is because I have floating shelves there, and I can't use undercabinet lights. (Elsewhere, where there are cabs, I'm putting in xenon lights.)

A seemingly knowledgeable person at a lighting store told me that 4" MR16 low-voltage halogen fixtures were the way to go in our situation, and certainly the quality of light seemed very good. My GC, however, says he always does 50W 120v halogen GU 10 bulbs (4"). He says the MR16s buzz, that their lamps burn out faster (pop), and that they're more expensive.

Not worried about the last point, but worried about the first two. And, given that I'm not worried about cost (and have told him we'll pay the extra), I'm not sure why he would be resistant to doing the MR16s ... unless they're not, in fact, better than the others ...

Meanwhile, everything is on hold while I scramble to make the right (no pressure) decision.

Wondering what others might think / have chosen to do ... many thanks in advance for any help provided
