As someone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, I want good, bright lighting which cans provide. In our first build in 1998, we used cans. Our last build 2 years ago also has cans--this time CREE LR6 led lights (for kitchen only--the only place we really use overhead lighting, and use it a LOT). I can't imagine other lighting scenario for the kitchen. You might have too many planned, but I can't imagine not using any. Looking up at our 10' ceiling, our cans look no closer than 40" apart.

Thanks davidtay, the kitchen area is roughly 12'X12', measuring from the sink wall to the imaginary line from the open garage door, and from the oven wall to the wall behind the cooktop. This is the area most concerning to me, as it's the area seeing the most change. I added the light in the center of the kitchen as I felt it would be dark with no light reaching it. My KD did not show it. She also had three lights over the sink wall, one centered over the sink and the other two smack dab in the corners of that run. These would have been only 2.5' apart. Actually there was talk of a total of 9 cans(1000 lumens) just for this kitchen area. That seemed like a bit much so I decided to place them over the work areas and work my way from there. If I didn't do the center light, the cans on the oven wall and cooktop wall would be about 6' apart. I don't know enough about the beam angles to know if I really would have a dark spot or not. I'm okay to not have the can, I am just trying to make my lighting functional for using the kitchen better. I currently have a fluorescent lightbox in the center of my kitchen, so I guess it seemed a natural progression for me to replace it with recessed lighting. All your advice is welcome, thanks!

David, I did try the bulb you recommended and I did not feel it had enough Lumens for my needs in the kitchen so I knew I would not like it in the office. Thank you for caring and trying to help. I may still move the bulbs down a little bit in the light (waiting for electrician to stop by to help me) to see if this would help any. I can't seem to figure out how to get more light in the dining room now as the bulbs surrounding the middle changed to LED Fixture are not where I need the light and if I move them from not being on top of a cabinet, then they are not even in distance from the middle light. I wonder if I sold my townhouse and made the lights not even, if this would cause me problems. I think the following bulb if it was much cheaper would have suited my needs and if it came in an Edison Base. I wish I went with 12 recessed cans instead of 8 recessed cans now. I was given the option but the other electricians said 6 or 8 so I thought 8 would be good. Their website just notes * Energy Star qualified to last at least 25,000 hours, * Designed to last 50, 000 hours in open fixtures * Designed to last 35, 000 hours in non-IC recessed cans (non-insulated ceilings). 3 year warranty. LRP38A92-20D40-GU24 is an 11 watt replacement for 75 watt PAR38 halogens in recessed cans, and requires ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmers if you want dimming; narrow 20 degree flood, excellent 94 color rendering index (CRI). LRP38-10L-27K-25D-GU24 is a newer design, 13.5w and considerably brighter, and replaces a 90 watt halogen PAR38 bulb. It's a still fairly narrow 25 degree flood, and has the same life expectancy, and 92 CRI. A slightly cooler, slightly brighter LRP38-10L-30K-25D-GU24 version is also available, it has 3000K rather than 2700K color. Also needs ELV dimmers. LBR30A92-50D-GU24 is the only wide flood of the group, and can fit smaller 5" cans, an 11w LED that replaces a 65w to 75w PAR30 halogen bulb - 50 degree beam angle (25 degree also available), 94 CRI. Same fixture and dimming specs as the others. Their spec sheet says "consult Cree LED Lighting for use in other fixture types", i.e. insulated-ceiling (IC) recessed cans. All this info copied from creeledlighting.com; go to "Products", then either "Lamps" for LED reflector bulbs or "Downlights" for LED modules that include built-in trim bezels. There's lots of downloadable PDFs for all of their lights with pictures and detailed specs. Most of their info is aimed at lighting specifiers and commercial customers - still the main buyers of expensive LED light bulbs - but these are UL listed and rated for residential use as well. I'm assuming you're in California or somewhere where GU24 bases are required so that's all I've mentioned, but they have standard screw-in Edison (E26) base bulbs too that retrofit incandescent fixtures. I'd normally consider only the 50-degree wide flood for home use since an 8' ceiling doesn't give narrow flood bulbs enough space to dissipate and you wind up with bright spots under the lights, but with your high ceilings the narrow floods may work too.
