Pickled oak cabinets and painting.

We were going to remodel the kitchen but now we will probably be moving so I just want to update.

My cabinets are pickled oak (1984). They are in good shape and I would like to paint them. I've got 6 uppers and 5 lowers and 6 drawers.

I just painted the bathroom vanity, which had the same pickled oak finish, and I think it looks very nice. I used Sherwin Williams ProClassic in Ivorie.

My husband thinks it is a bad idea to paint wood and cover up the grain. I think he is wrong and that painted cabinets are beautiful. I don't like the grain on the oak anyway.

Will painting the kitchen cabinets ourselves make it look cheap? Are we better off just changing out the hardware?

Thanks!
