Like cynic, I didn't realize Rinso was even made anymore; I remember it from decades ago. Seems that back then it came as big tablets - one per wash, I presume. I never tried it, as it was fast disappearing off shelves when I was a newlywed.

I was wondering if they could have been picked up by one of the retro brand outfits but apparently not. Rinso is said to still be made by Unilever for foreign markets but in the US, they sold the name to 99 Cents Only Stores. Presumably they're having a private manufacturer make it for them.

I found this link which gives the history of Rinso detergent. Note it disappeared from store shelves in the mid-1970s (glad to know my memory is still functioning, LOL) and came back later as Surf detergent. It has, however, been sold at 99 Cent stores since 1992.

I wonder how Rinso's price compares with the price I paid for Sears Ultra HE laundry detergent, per load? I paid less than $10 for one formula(with OxiClean) which washes at least 120 loads, and $12.50 for another (Stain-fighting) formula which washes at least 275 loads. Both formulas do an excellent job of getting my laundry clean.

Price per load is easy to figure out. Rinso is $.99/21=4.71¢/load. $10/120=8.3¢/load. $12.50/275=4.5Ù¢/load.

rosabearr, there's quite a difference in the cost per load when you compare your Gain at 80 loads and the Sears detergent at 275 loads. Personally, I have yet to find any detergent which is a better buy than the Sears detergents. I had not used them until I got my HE TL washer, but I'm sold on them now.

No problem. I justused the figures from above. Probably the best deals I've ever found on laundry detergent was when Arm & Hammer would be on sale, rebate and get a coupon. This was years ago now which is when and why I started using it. It was free after rebate, limit of 2-4 jugs usually. Then if there was a coupon for it, that took care of the tax. A few years ago they had a brand called Spring. No coupons but free after rebate, then 99¢ after rebate. But after about a jug and a half I started itching from it so I gave it away. Then last spring I got some Tide coupons, coupled with a sale price made it cost me the sales tax. With that, 32 loads for 36¢. Just over a penny a load, and I only use half the recommended amount so it's better yet, plus my clothes have never been cleaner and without having to use additives. But those deals don't come everyday. Course when they do I get as many as I can. Doesn't bother me to stock the shelves and/or give it away. But that's why, to me, even 10¢ a load looks spendy!

I'm not sure if Rinso came as tablets, but I know I used to use Salvo tablets. They were large solid powdered detergent. I put 2 in a wash. It was easy to take to the laundry room when I lived in an apartment building in the 60's.

kruzalot, I don't remember Salvo tablets; I wasn't washing clothes in the '60s - just ironing them after my mom washed them, LOL. It sounds like they were very similar to Rinso.

cynic, I think you qualify as a Super Shopper, LOL. Years ago I used to get deals like that. Now I don't see nearly as many coupons or rebates on laundry detergents.

But I do stock up when I see great deals. Right now I have several buckets of Sears HE detergents in my garage, all bought at half-price. I don't think I'll have to buy any more until at least 2010. :-)

I use Rinso and so far find it to be a decent product, but I would like to point out that 99 Cents bought the *name*, not the formula. So the product currently available as Rinso detergent in the US may or may not be anything like the one Unilever stmade and still sells overseas. I use 1.5 Tide scoops of it to get the same cleaning power as Tide on more heavily soiled items, but even at that, it costs less than Tide and seems to clean as well when I allow for the extra use of soap, so I'm happy with it. I also like that it's made in America, so I don't have to worry about stuff like melamine or lead being in it.
