Important Message From Food Lion Stores

Received this email today:

Dear Valued Customer,

As an MVP card holder and as one of our customers who has indicated a desire for e-mail messages from us, we are sending you this alert regarding additional peanut products recalled today by National Raisin, one of our suppliers. The recall is due to an inspection by the Texas Department of Health at the Peanut Corporation of America's plant in Plainview, Texas.

The following Food Lion and Bloom products are being recalled:

Bloom Nut Seed Bry Trail Mix 72543992169 6 oz.

We are asking consumers to return these items to the store for a full refund.

At this time, a number of products containing peanut butter, peanut paste or peanuts have been recalled; however, peanut butter sold in jars at our stores is not affected.

We would like to assure you that Food Lion LLC, including all Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, Reid's and Harveys stores, regards food safety and the safety of our customers as a top priority and is our utmost concern. We are also updating our Web site, http://www.foodlion.com/recalls, with all the products we have pulled.

This whole thing has me scratching my head. There's been some peanut farms with trouble and one major company with problems. It's almost like there's a surprise when a company that uses a, how to describe it... low quality supplier? for their supplies has to recall products.

I was talking to a lady at the store the other day and I commented how well stocked the peanut butter shelves were. I like Skippy and it was on sale for $1.49/jar. She and I agreed on this. I had two jars in my cart and she was getting some. We agreed that there was no need to fear the major brands. Just avoid the peanut butter added items where the companies don't do quality control on the product themselves. As I said, I bought two jars. They'll be on the shelf for a while anyway just in case. But the places that use it as an additive and don't care who the supplier is, to me would be suspect. At this point though, I would not buy a store brand or generic brand of jar peanut butter. Probably safe? Yeah. Worth the risk? Not to me.

I found it curious that Target pulled a bunch of items (in their house brand) to be on the safe side. I commend them for being proactive. But then I noticed a number of other items they had on the shelf containing peanuts that they didn't pull. Again, I'm not running in fear, but I found it curious.

Not ALL peanut products are recalled. It's only those products that were processed by Peanut Corps of America. And they mostly process commerical products that go to institutions and are used as ingredients for other foods (like dog biscuits, cakes or cracker snacks)

Most brand name peanut butters manufacture their own product and so are not included in this recall.

Recalled products are now well over 1400. The list is so massive the FDA has the list by category, but you can all search for a specific brand or type of food

The three remaining goats are still here and getting a little less nervous. This is not a balanced group: 2 boy and one girl is bad news! We have an offer of two pigmy females, they were a friend's boy's pets and the kid is getting tired of them, we shall most likely have them in our herd. Just hoping we don't see that lion any more. Hot wire may be a deterrent, it is working great, we can hear it clicking from our decks. Chloe will not be forgotten; she was small and a character, racing down the slope so fast she'd fall on her face, roll over, shake herself off and continue.

David, Cliff sent a long, informative email very early this morning to everyone on his mailing list. To summarize, he stated that he's very pleased with the results of his sale, but still has many roses left in his large collection. In the coming days/weeks he will be sending the names of the remaining roses BY CLASS to people on his mailing list. The class he spotlights in today's email: Hybrid Perpetuals (& there are some stunning ones still awaiting new homes). I encourage you to contact Cliff at EuroDesert ASAP & request to be added to his email list. Even tho he's involved in this monumental task, he's remained amazingly responsive to emailed question, so if you have a specific question or two, ask. As for your question regarding shipping costs: My EuroDesert order arrived in 3 separate shipments. My final shipment containing one large rose was shipped to my home on the east coast for $15 + change. My first shipment contained 3 roses, the second 2. I don't remember the exact amount for shipping on those, but the cost for each was in the low twenties. Bear in mind that the roses Cliff is shipping are NOT typical bare roots. The ones I received have good root systems and multiple thick canes that have been pruned quite short. Most had no vegetative growth when they arrived, but they all starting sprouting new qrowth within days of being potted or planted in the garden. Hope this helps answer your questions, David.

No one is addressing trees treated with Neonicotinoids. These are systemic insecticides and are one of those which are devastating bee colonies. This chemical stays active in all parts of the tree (including pollen) for 2 years. If the trees are not labeled as organic or that this type of treatment has NOT been applied, it probably has. No bees, no tasty fruit! Not so cheap now. Think long and hard before you buy any plant that is not labeled organic. Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Target, Tractor Supply and Southern States are all big name stores who carry assorted plants, including fruit trees, at their stores. Lowes has stated they will label and so has Home Depot. Otherwise, stick to organic nurseries. Do you really want to contribute to wiping out the bees? FYI, this is all bees: honeybees, bumble bees, mason bees, any and all.

Golddust and Groominggal (thanks for the suggestions), I think they do make storage cubes. And putting the wheels on would be easy. The tricky part would be the food-safe liner. And I would like that liner to have a handle for easy lift-out for pouring into bowls, and getting the last drop of old before adding new. Jeannine, you're lucky you have that much free shelf room. The little bags are a lot easier to handle! Allison, thanks for the link. That's probably what I should use in my garage if I'm to keep on getting the big bags, at least. That's a great price! Maybe with the smaller bags I could find a way to have only one location... in my kitchen... but I'm going to have to carry those bags up the stairs. Desertsteph, I love corner cabs, they are so cute! I hope you can work something out. Pupwhipped, those are deffinitely cute for a garage or pantry. I wish they would tell how many lbs. of dog food each size would hold.

Skippy Peanut Butter is NOT part of the recall. They do not make their peanut butter from peanut paste supplied from PCA.

The more I read about Peanut Corporation, the more digusted I become. Stuart Parnell, the owner knew the stuff was tainted and ordered it be shipped anyway...

"In one e-mail, Lightsey wrote Parnell and discussed positive salmonella tests on one batch of its products. Parnell gave instructions to nonetheless "turn them loose" after getting a negative test result from another testing company.

Â In another e-mail, Parnell expressed concerns over losing "$$$$$" due to delays in shipment.

Â In a company-wide e-mail on Jan. 12, Parnell told employees there was no salmonella in its plants Â "we have never found any salmonella at all" Â and accused the news media of "looking for a news story where there currently isnÂt one."

Now the company is declaring bankruptcy -to beat the lawsuits, I'll bet. But I believe this man will go to jail for negligent homicide.

There are certain financial obligations that can't get wiped out by bankruptcy, like taxes.

Liability for wrongful death is another thing that you shouldn't be able to escape by declaring bankruptcy.

I agree Lindsay, but liability and the ability to pay are two different things. They are declaring immediate bankruptcy (Chapter 7, not Chapter 11) and liquidating assets to distribute to creditors. So, they can be found liable, but there won't be any funds to pay the damages.

On the other hand, the jerk owner who knowingly caused tainted food to be shipped could be found personally liable.

I hope he's not shifting his own wealth into offshore accounts :(
