Well, it looks like I'm going to have to consider low voltage then. Direct wire would be more convenient. I will re-read the LED ucl instructional threads now with low voltage in mind. Are there a couple manufacturers you might steer me too that are reasonably priced, have the aluminum casing, 2700 warm light, and reflect well on most counter tops (not intense dotted lines)? The transformer (think that's what it's called) would be placed in the basement, accessed near the kitchen. davidtay, have you ever heard of a low voltage led ucl transformer interfering with another low voltage system in the same room? The Broan make up air damper for the vent hood, as all universal mua dampers, also requires such a system from kitchen to the basement furnace via low voltage signal. I don't want humming and flickering throughout the kitchen. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

Thanks palimpsest, I took your adviced and straightened out the arrangement. I'm still in the dark on how to place some of the cans though. I'm hoping someone can enlighten me! (sorry for the poor word play, it's early and I'm not finished with my coffee yet :) issues 1) if I place the light in front of the pantry in line with the 2 lights over the peninsula it will be off center of the pantry. Is it better to have the pantry light centered so it will wash the pantry doors evenly? 2) Sinc a joist blocks us from placng cans directly over the edge of the counter on either side of the stove, what is the second best placement? Closer to the cabs or further away? 3) I already have 4 of the 6" LED bulbs, but am I right that the 6" will spread the light out more and will it be ok to have the 6" on the dinning side and 4" on the cooking side of the kitchen? They're on seperate switches. any ideas? this is so much harder than it appears from the outside!

I’d like to update three recessed fluorescent lights by transitioning to a tray ceiling with a different light fixture. I’ve seen a few after photos of people executing successfully but was told joists might get in the way or I could affect the ceiling structure . What do I need to look for to see if this is even possible & where do I start to ensure I’m not going to do any damage?

It's not a long term solution, this particular light has been eating bulbs ever since it was installed. I had been using halogen, and only just discovered that (most) LED bulbs won't cooperate with it at all. Eventually I will bite the bullet and replace it. We have a dozen of these units and only the one is problematic
