Improved Lighting Layout - guidance pls

Reread several threads, sought advice and reworked 1st floor plan - please give additional guidance if you can. I need to sign off to the electrician early next week

You could eliminate the 2 center lights in the living room - 6 instead of 8.

davidtay - THANKYOU for looking at this! I was hoping you would :). I keep re-reading your tips and comments ... both trying to educate myself and push back the insecurity as I wind my way through this! BTW - ceiling height is 9'.

I especially wondered whether the 14 lights in the kitchen are well placed or too much or?

The four cans on the sink wall are about 12" o.c (or should it be the rim) from the wall because there are no cabinets (obscured in visual because they are placed over the counter); and two of these are equidistant from the 30" sink base center (about 36" o.c. apart).

Along the range wall there are under cabinet and hood lights - so went with the nine island/aisle lights instead of placing cans at 24-26:" along this wall.

At your suggestions, I am removing the two cans from the center of the family room. The remaining cans are 3 FT from each wall and spaced about 4 1/2 FT apart - is that sufficient for this area? Is 3 FT from wall fine where there will be couch against the wall?

OR is the "four corner" layout more balanced for the family area? There will likely be lamp lighting by the couch and one or two of the opposing corners.

Wow ... I feel so much better already knowing other eyes (and expert ones at that) have viewed this. Lighting seems to get less study and scrutiny than kitchen cabinets but is an amazingly important element and investment than can make a difference daily for a lifetime spent in a house. I think I've learned a heck of a lot in a short period from the posts on this forum.

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

The most used space in any kitchen is the space between the sink and the stove. That's where all the prep takes place. Right now, with both of your sinks on the perimeter, that leaves you with your back to anyone else in the kitchen, especially the island. A smaller prep sink on the island instead of the two larger sinks would actually be more functional than what you have. You also have your dishwashers spread apart, which just makes the cleanup zone encompass the whole kitchen rather than just a distinct space away from the prep zone. If you have something that won't fit in that dishdrawer, you have to schlep it all across the kitchen dripping water the whole way to be able to put it in the DW. And, a DW set 90Â° to a sink is a real PIA to actually use. It always bangs your shins. Your dish storage is a LONG way away from your cleanup zone. It's a hike from either of the DW's. I'd put the freezer drawer and MW on the other side of the island adjacent to the fridge. That way if anyone wants a snack or drink while you're cooking, they're mostly out of the prep zone. The layout of your cooktop and windows suggest that you aren't allowing enough room for a proper ventilation hood. With that large a cooking zone, you'll need a large and powerful CFM ventilation system at least 3" larger than your cooking zone. Your island looks a bit large for the space, and the clearances look tight. It would help if you could indicate some dimensions with your drawing. I think this is a case that a rectangular island might not be the best shape for the space. Maybe kidney shaped, with the larger part of the "bean" in the prep zone, and the smaller part being the seating area. Rounded seating areas are always more comfortable for the folks sitting at them than are square.

Thanks Lisa_a, and yes, I DO want that kind of help, please! 51.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> Numbers written in pen on the above layout are for the grainte guys...they refer to counter tops only. So the aisle between the sink/fridge wall and Island is 48", but there is only 39" between the slider wall and island and 39" between entrance from mudroom and Island, so a little tight (but no appliances on either of those sides). There is more than 5 feet between island and sofa, but that is adjustable (we will be buying new sofas). I know the other measurements are hard to make out, so: -Total dimensions of room (kitchen and fam room combined) are 187 1/2" x 366" -sink wall to kitchen entrance will be 76" -doorway from mudroom to kitchen will be 47" (I say "will be because we are expanding the doorway by 7.5") -wall between kitchen entry and family room entry is 134 1/4", we are planning to put the pantry and bar area there (18" deep by 72" wide, combined) -From the sink wall to the sliding glass door is 112 1/2". Right now, the island is 56"x72", so maybe I can shave a few inches off the length? I am trying to fit a microwave as well as two 18" bases (one for recycling, one set of 18" drawers). My KD put in a 27" space for a MW, could I fit one in a 24" space? We only use the MW for small items/ reheating. Maybe I can even do a space saver? I am not picky when it comes to the MW at all, and quite frankly I hate the look of most trim kits...I would be fine with just a shelf, I think. I think the other few inches on the island are for panels? I would LOVE to fit at least 4 seats... This is my new inspiration for the island: What do you think...can I fit something similar? Feel free to be honest, everyone. I can handle it and I am only doing this once! I want to get it right! Thanks so much for all of the help!

I bought 40 of these pulls and found a dozen knobs that match nicely, so these are my starting point! I picked up some green and some cream 4x4 tile samples. What do you think? Cream cabinets with green tile is my favorite. (I had to use a tile to simulate cabinet color) Navy cabinets and cream tile backsplash. Love the hardware on the blue, but feels off otherwise. Thought maybe tile the are behind stove with a decorative tile like the third pic??? constructive criticism & suggestions welcome.

There's room to eliminate a can or two in the kitchen (probably 2).

I'd give the electrician some room for determining the final placement as he will have to deal with the ceiling joists and other obstructions above the ceiling board.

The 4 cans @ the sink wall can be kept on a separate circuit which would provide greater flexibility in lighting the space.

There will probably be at least 3 separate circuits (switches) for the kitchen lighting - 1 for the sink wall, another for general and a third for UCL.

The family area would be fine with 6 cans.

9' is a nice height to have.
