Har far should recessed light be in front of pantry wall?
Comments (2)Agreed, depends on the location of the studs. With recessed lighting you will never completely, IMO, get light to shine directly on the back of the shelves but 12 to 20 inches should be right. Don't forget that many recessed lights have a mechanism built right in allowing you to direct the light so that can help as well if you need to get bright light to the back of the pantry shelves. The link below, in case it helps, provices some pictures on the lighting in our recently remodeled kitchen, including recessed lighting near the pantry. Comments (4)When I asked this question at a lighting store, I was told that the light itself should be half on/half off the edge of the countertop below. This supposedly eliminates the shadowing thing, without glare on the granite (in my case). For my pantries, we moved them out a little farther from the cabinets themselves (about 6-8 inches) and then offset them a little so it is set over where the door would open. That seems to have worked very well. Because I have a wall with pantry/double ovens/doorway/pantry/fridge/writing area, we kept the lights all at the same distance and tried to keep them even from each other. :) I'm a symmetry nut... Hope this helps a little... fern76...See MoreHow far from cabinets did you put recessed lighting?
Comments (3)Location varies depending on the size and layout of your kitchen. I have an island in my kitchen and most of the recessed lights are in the walk area of the kitchen. In front of one set of cabinets the lights are 30" from the cabinet fronts but along the frig wall the lights are 20" from the cabinets. I also have undercabinet lighting plus 5 extra recessed lights over my sink area (it's a wide area). These lights are located 6" from the wall and butt up to the crown molding. I suggest you take your kitchen layout to a lighting store (not big box) and ask for their help. It's usually a free service. Make sure each designated area (sink , overhead and undercounter) has a separate light switch. Yes, I think you should put in the undercounter lights. :)...See MoreHow far from cabinets did you put recessed lighting?
Comments (5)My uppers are 12" deep and the recessed lights are about 3" from the cabinets so they shine directly over the countertops. The kitchen is not very wide and we have a ceiling fan in the center of it. We didn't want to put the lights too close to the fan because of the possibility of strobing. There is going to be about 6" of crown molding so the cabinet doors will clear the rim of the recessed lights. We also put in undercabinet lights because you can never have enough light in a kitchen! We were some limitations in where the recessed cans could go because we didn't want to move the air conditioning ducts that are above the kitchen....See Morecisco2000
