Whirlpool dryer/ senseon system/ matches Calypso

I have a Whirlpool electric dryer that matches my Calypso washer, purchased 5 yrs ago (Model GEW9868KQ0) with the Senseon drying system. I went to use it yesterday and it wouldn't run. I select the cycle, the light goes on, and the number of minutes appears. However, when I push the start button, I hear a little click and nothing happens. I have tried this with different cycles and the dryer will not start. The power is on and the door is completely closed. I have switched off and on the circuit breaker and this does not help either. Any ideas?

I picked up one of these a month ago at a garage sale (and the matching washer). Finished refurbishing the washer this week, haven't yet cracked the dryer. Will advise when I get some details on it, if I have anything useful to offer. There's probably a tech sheet inside the console with diagnostic routines. My first guess is the motor has gone bad, or the controller circuit board (or maybe the door safety switch?).

I had some recent problems with mine. We got an error code (E1?) some of the time. Other times it just shut off. I was told there was a service advisory out on the control panel for this dryer, and my service guy said he had a hard time finding the part at all (mine had the champange color and he replaced it with silver). The guy replaced both the computer and the control panel since we had an extended warranty (renewed them becuase of the troubles reported with the Calypso). He said the parts alone would have run over $900, so without the warranty, I'd have been buying a new machine.

Have you tried unplugging it for a while? The problems we had were intermittent -- sometimes it would run the next time and some times not at all for a couple of days. It started working again and worked more than it didn't while we were waiting on parts. He said the intermittent problem was classic of the control board issue. I know we got lucky, but that's why we're planning on getting new machines in a year or two when the warranty runs out and/or we have another failure.

Oh, that tech sheet is tucked inside if it wasn't removed -- and the hard part is getting the console off. The clips are underneath the side -- front and back on each side from what I remember. He had a hard time getting a couple of them to release, and then a couple fo the clips fell down when they did.

Well, I like the concept of the huge TL, agitator-free (although Cabrio seems to have a small, hump-like one)relatively high efficiency machines. I've had one for the past 5 years. They hold a lot of laundry - I can do two loads of what would have been 4 in the basic Sear's machine. I looked into the FL machines, but they all seem so small inside, have long wash cyles, can be quite costly, can be unreliable (as any machine can)and I like the convenience of adding clothes throughout the load. Cabrio seems like a very sturdy machine. It's easy to operate. It moves the clothes around very well, in fact I always hear lots of swishing & splashing noises as it works and washes great. Time will tell, but so far, I don't have any complaints. And if something happens to the machine, I have a repair or replace 5 year warranty from Bray & Scarff that I purchased for $139. So far, they promptly exchanged the two new leaking Harmony's I had within days of my calls - no problems dealing with them. I did see Consumer Reports rated Cabrio high, although I'm not sure I saw the negative consumer ratings online although I looked. Personally, I thought my Harmony's were flimsy, and some people just love theirs. Whatever you get, just make sure of the return policy in case it doesn't work out or you don't like it.

after reading all the posts on the kenmore elite calypso appliances....i am convinced that i need to have my purchase addressed in some way. we bought the appliances in 2003...and from the get go, have experienced the problems expressed in the many letters written in this site.... call me a slow learner...but i never suspected it was the washer that was defective....after all i bought Sears Best...the Elite Calypso. i have had problems from the get go...with mainly, any thing with looped threads....i have had brand new bath towels come out of the washer with its loops and the pile cut and pulled out....i have gone as far as returned the towels to the stores i purchased them from complaining about shoddy work...and got my money returned....no questions asked. the problem continues and i suspected that perhaps there was something in the washer that had a raised metal edge or something that was pulling out the threads of my towels and rugs..... and out of desperation i went online to question if any one had the problems i am continuing to have with my washer. and boy was i amazed at the many reports on the faults of the Calypso. i was never notified of a class action against the makers of the calpyso...it may be too late for my problems to be addressed...but now what do i do? i have never put in a complaint to Sears on this problem, because i did not know till recently it had something to do with the making of my washer..... any advice on what steps if any i should take? thank you for any advice you can offer me to get this problem taken care of. i guess my first step should be to go to Sears and notify them of my problem. i know, i know, 5 years is a long time to finally discover that Satisfaction Guaranteed only happens if you uncover the problem with your purchase and ask for help.

You've got some good points on both sides. Personally, my laundry is in the basement so neither the critters, the crickets nor I care what the laundry units look like, whether they be different color (avacado green washer with white dryer) or style (GE washer & Whirlpool dryer). That said, I have problems replacing a perfectly good appliance, especially for aesthetic reasons. Why spend the money? Your concern on the electrical connection is the best argument for getting a new dryer. However, for the electrical connection you would need a second outlet to install the Miele washer. To get around it, you can buy a rather spendy adapter from Miele or have an outlet installed. My question is why not just use the old dryer on the outlet box if you opt for the adapter rather than the second outlet? You might need a different cord on the dryer but that's a $15-$20 expense. I'm not an electrician and not claiming to be, but I see no reason why that wouldn't work. I'd check the cost of the second outlet. Then I'd go with the adapter and connect the old dryer to it. My last choice would be replacing the dryer. If you're used to a conventional top loader and going to the Miele you should have a nice system. With the high spin speeds and large capacity on the dryer you should have much faster drying time on many loads. One other suggestion/reminder: Be sure to cut down the amount of detergent you use, especially starting out and make sure it's low sudsing. If you're used to a larger capacity, you might tend to want to overdose the machine.

@beaglenc Your description sounds like it may be a form of tarnish that is appearing because of the water (with detergent and/or fabric softner) is splashing up and hitting it above the water line. I figure it's not getting it below the water line because the friction from the moving clothes, etc. is polishing it off. They do say that the tub gets smoother with use. I'll bet the "ring" will come off with a bit of Bar Keepers Friend.

lascatx, there's no way those parts should be $900! I looked up the model number mentioned above at an online parts site I use. The touch panel in champagne (pearl) is $138.99. (Silver [pewter] is higher at 176.09.) The control board is $135.09. That's $274.08. SEVENTY percent LESS than $900. Both are in stock for shipping on Monday. (The pewter panel is out of stock, estimated ship 7 to 10 days.) Do not always believe what a service guy says. There are often alternatives.

Maybe he meant with installation and all; maybe he just wanted me to feel better about having paid for the extended warranty -- don't know. Didn't matter for me -- $10 or $910. I didn't pay anything out of pocket for either part or installation -- but it might matter to laballet.
