Electric Blanket Out of Control

The topic about electric blankets brought to mind a funny event that happened to my in-laws. They lived where the winter nights were frigid and used an electric blanket to start the night. Mother-in-law and father-in-law preferred different temperatures, so they had a blanket with dual controls, one for each blanket half. FIL rigged a timer to cut the power to the blanket about 2 hours after they retired to bed. With this arrangement, they could let the house cool 5 to 10 degrees at night and yet be cozy in bed.

And then one night, all was not well. MIL was geting too hot so she'd trun down her control and a minute later FIL was advanceing his control. This went on for 2 hours until the overheated partner said enough, threw off the covers. got up and turned on the light. They were near the point of coming to blows and both were cursing the electric blanket. Now fully awake in the lighted room, they spied the problem. The controls had been switched! The left side control was on the right headboard and vice versa.

Obviously the person you spoke with at J&P doesn't know what they are talking about. RMV is spread from contaminated rootstock, or infected scions grafted onto the rootstock. If one or the other has the virus, the healthy tissue will get it also. Obviously these roses either were not heat indexed, or else the heat indexing didn't cure the disease. There are other rose viruses that can be spread by insects, but Rose Mosaic is not one of them. There is a very slight chance it can be spread underground with root grafting, but would be rare. Malcolm Manners is the expert on RMV. You may want to e-mail him. He posts once in awhile here, so if you go to the antique roses forum and do a search on no-spray roses or rose virus, you may get one of his posts to pop up. In my opinion, the nursery should refund your money or give you credit towards another rose. I would also insist on talking to someone at J&P that is "higher up" in management. You can always send some plant tissue off to a lab that does Eliza testing if you want to be absolutely sure and have proof. Washington State University does testing. Their number is 509-786-9382. I have used them a few times. Every sample I sent them that had symptoms was infected. I've even had a few with no symptoms test positive that had poor health or poor performance. Sandy

I have electric blankets, one in the house, one in the RV. Love them, but don't often leave them on after I get in bed. I warm the bed with it first. I also have a heated throw that sounds good right about now! And, somewhere, a down comforter that I really should dig out. I like your quilt! I am color challanged. I think my graphic artist DB got all the color talent. Picking colors/designs that go together is very difficult for me. You did a great job! I have two treadle machines, one belonged to DH's grandmother, the other was my great grandmothers. I also have my great aunt's electric portable Singer. DH won't let me use it because of the antient and deteriating cord. He is an electrician and says no way! I won't have it re-wired either. I also have my aunt's electric machine, with out going to the basement, I have no idea what brand. Those are my antique machines. I also have a Kenmore that I got as a graduation gift in 1977, and a Husvarna Viking 500. And a Brother PE-150 embroidery machine. I don't sew much any more. I got burned out sewing for the kids and myself for so many years when money was sooooo tight. I don't even want to look a a machine much any more! Loved meeting you in your video! Tami

Update: Thanks for all the responses, folks. I thought maybe the freezer was the only issue, but apparently there is still something afoot here. In Oct (a mild month here in FL), we averaged 62 kw per day. I found an Oct bill from 2007, and our average usage was 40 kw per day. I don't think I used the HVAC more than two days in Oct of this year, no other reason why it should be so high. Nov and Dec bills were even worse- back up to $375. So we finally tried shutting everything off- turning off and unplugging everything in the house, turning off every breaker. Got the meter to stop spinning, then turned on one breaker at a time to see what would happen. A number of them caused the meter to spin very, very slowly, but one made it spin pretty quickly. It was for the lighting in our living room, master bath, and back porch, and everything was definitely unplugged and turned off. I had an electrician come out and so far he hasn't found anything that could be causing a problem, but he is sending out a couple of guys next week to do a more thorough inspection, including walking around the attic and checking things up there. My husband already checked the attic for HVAC issues, but couldn't find any loose duct work or anything like that. If anyone has any ideas of what else we could look for, I would be very grateful! I can not fathom why the lighting on that breaker would be using electricity with everything off and unplugged! Many thanks!

The blanket arrived, spent one night on my bed, and was returned the next day. Its fatal flaw? Too heavy. Yes, the "7 Layers of Warmth" made for too much blanket. I can't bear heavy weighty covers on top of me, even in the winter. The blanket was well made and produced nice warmth, but I knew the minute I got under the covers that I couldn't do more than one night like that. Also, not that it was a total deal breaker, but the controls are more upright and wanted to topple over, esp. from the weight of the two cords hanging down. The nice part of returning it was I bought it online from Penney's and I took it back to my local store. While in Penney's I bought another blanket, Biddeford Heated Plush Blanket, less than half the price of the other one. It was not overly thick. Only problem is that it's plush and I just cannot understand why everyone's making blankets out of that stuff. I had to go to Macy's as well and checked out their electric blankets. They had a different Biddeford, Comfort Knit Heated Blanket and it's fleece, not plush. A bit more, but still less than half the price of the one I returned. I bought it as well and decided to have an Electric Blanket Face-Off. I decided to try the fleece first. Plus it has controls that sit more securely on the nightstand. Last night was a dream. Warm, responsive controls, no added weight. I have a winner. I haven't decided if I will return the plush blanket or maybe use it on my guest bed. What I learned: Unless you know a particular blanket works well for you, it helps to buy in person so you can open the bag and assess the thickness and how the wires feel. Also dig down a bit and get a sense of the controls' ergonomics.

That's funny. Robert and I agree on ambient temperature settings for the house, luckily. UNfortunately, his body is like a roast just removed from the oven. No, he's like the darned oven, itself! That, and his rhinoceros snoring imitations, is why I have an electric blanket on MY bed, lol.

Rhizo...Your hubby and mine are the same....hot blooded as I say and I am always freezing....thus we have our own beds and I love my electric blanket and mountain of other covers, while he sleeps with just a sheet, if even that.

Funny about the FIL and MIL's blanket controls being switched.

Rhizo and Linda, my hubby is like that too. I've never known anyone who has body heat just radiating from their body like that.

I snuggle when we first get into bed----for about 30 seconds and that's it. I also usually pack the bedding along between us so that I don't accidentally touch him throughout the nite :~)

Could be that your time is coming ... just don't get in a hurrry. You won't need a furrry then ... even in snow season (if you have one).

Don't tell me that there's a hot flashes season for hubbies in your neck of the woods?

Very funny and it has happened to us. We have an electric blanket in the motorhome and you know they are not very well insulated...so we were alternating freezing and sweltering until we discovered the problem. It is always a puzzle in that small space to keep the controls on the proper side, so even knowing 'the problem' we still get them backwards too often..... makes for an interesting first night out!

One summer my mother drove us to Cape Cod from Illinois. We were to share a cabin with a couple who were old frends of my mother -- and two of their daughters. My mother brought along her 'great find' for the twin beds we girls would use: Nylon sheets. The first night, we girls threw back the covers and leaped into our beds -- sliding right across those slippery sheets and out onto the floor! The sheets stayed behind when we left; they were also h-o-t.

Paint yer name on the control with White-out, maybe ... or nail polish.

Actually, if you were to use white for one ... and nail polish for the other, just a glance would do the job, without needing to look for the name.

Actually ... you wouldn't need to go to all the work of writing the name of each in the first place ... " ...just a dab'd do ya", ... right?

ole joyful ... whose farmer Dad said that he didn't mind work ... but if he could let his brain figure out a simpler way of getting the job done right, that suited him well
