What can I put in my septic tank?
Comments (37)I wrote to Damn asking them if their product dissolves grease when I add it to hot water and flush it down my drain to the septic tank (basically) and here was their response: I wish we could help, but Dawn has not been tested for the purpose of rinsing grease down the drain. Because it hasn't been tested for this use, we have no data to claim whether using Dawn and hot water to flush grease down the drain will be safe for a septic system or not. Thanks for writing. Karen Dawn Team I thought that was interesting given the fact that they say: Dawn gets grease out of the way, breaks up and dissolves grease fast. from their website: Since Dawn was invented in 1973, Dawn dish liquid has been known for superior grease-fighting power. It's so effective on dishes, pots and pans, that over the years, consumers have found many uses for Dawn around their homes. Animal rescuers have even discovered that it's a great way to remove grease from animals in oil spill cleanups. As a result, Dawn has helped conservation organizations save thousands of animals for over 35 years. Today, Dawn has grown into an international family of dishwashing liquids dedicated to innovation and answering consumers' ever-changing needs. SO I guess they back it up in all ways except the septic tank. LOL...See MoreLawn Over Septic Tank
Comments (11)Deerslayer's answer is the best guess without seeing your situation. If the tank was leaking sewage you would know it due to the nasty smell and wet area around the tank. Plus, the grass would be lush and green from all the moisture and nutrients it would be getting. You could ask whoever installed the tank if it would be ok to add some topsoil over it to give the grass roots some more depth to develop. If it's in an area that would look good mulched, that's another option. Watering the grass over the tank will help but be careful that you don't cause a problem with the tank by water seeping into the access doors. What you cannot do is put any kind of permanent paving or living area over it. You must be able to have access to it to have it pumped out. As to the Rid-X, it won't help the septic tank in any way. In fact, no state health department that I know of recommends any kind of additive for a system and I've heard that some actually ban them. The natural bacteria that goes down your drains is all the system needs to function properly. That said, there are some things that you absolutely shouldn't put down the drains. These include "excess" amounts of household chemicals such as bleach and antibacterial cleaners, paint or paint thinners (don't even clean out your brushes and rollers into the house plumbing,) grease or oil or any pesticides. If you ask your health department you can get a comprehensive list. I've been in the septic system business for over 40 years so I speak from experience and knowledge....See MoreToilets with septic tanks?
Comments (5)The toilet that stops up would indicate a restriction in the line related to that toilet. The fact the other one doesn't stop up but only partially flushes helps to indicate the septic system is ok. Make sure the vents coming out at the roof are not plugged with a bee's nest or birds nest or leaves. Next, make sure the tank is filling up to the proper water level. It's possible on both of the toilets this is not happening. The one that stops up, might not be stopping up, it might not be getting enough water as zl700 suspects. The slow flusher the same way. Another thing you may want to look at are the holes under the rim of the toilet. Take a mirror and look at them to see if they are partially plugged with build up. Take a small brush or wire and clean the holes out. Don't be so rough you break the porcelin but do give them a good cleaning, as far in as your tool can reach. If the vents are clear, the tank fills to the fill line and the ports are cleaned in the rim of the toilet, everything should work fine unless there's build up in the pipe. It wouldn't hurt to use some of the clog clearing and drain maintenance products that are safe for septic systems. These contain enzymes that will dissolve any build up and they work quite well. If used daily the first month, they can completely clear the line....See Moreseptic tank used for grey water
Comments (2)Earth brand washing detergents seem to be OK on the garden. According to www.lanfaxlabs.com.au this brand is among the ones with the lowest content of sodium or salt per wash. And you only use a very small amount of it in a large volume of water. The raised pH is not that much of an issue as my soil contains a great deal of compost and mulch. This produces humic acid as it breaks down and the humic acid will largely neutralize the base in the wash water. I have been spraying both the wash and rinse water over the gardens for a couple of months now with no side effects so far....See Moresuburbanmd
