Which fabric for this chair

I'm almost finished re-doing my office.

One of the last "big" projects is reupholstering this chair. The room has a modern feel, with the wallpaper and rug. Obviously, the chair is traditional, but I like mixing styles. If done right, it works.

Could you let me know what you think of these fabric choices?

(I also want to find an ottoman to use with it - would a square work? Or round. Square ottomans seem easier to find.)

I like the look of this modern fabric with this chair... this is kind of what I'm going for.... but not as busy as this...

bigdoglover, Where the piano is now is next to a banister and spindles, whioh on the other side is my foyer. It's a narrow space, so would never fit a small baby grand. Years ago I did have my sofa on the wall where it is and the two chairs across from it to make a conversation area. One problem with that was that I had to put the 2 chairs in the front of the window, but because the window is so big they were kind of in the center of the window. I couldn't put them on the other end of the window from the sofa because the space is limited down that far - closer to the pinao area. Don't know if that makes sense. One idea I had was to leave the sofa where it is, move it out closer to the chairs, which would work because the room is long and put a sofa table behind it. It would still have the same arrangement so to speak just a little closer and more intimate. Any thoughts on that? I plan to replace that picture over my sofa with a large canvas style. I did have candle sconces on either side, but I didn't put them back up after I painted the living room in Jan.

Thank you, everyone, for your feedback! My goal was to create a warm, inviting space with neutral walls and floor and lots of color in the accent furnishings. So I agree, akrogirl, that the silver sage curtains seem to be reading too cool for the space. Funny - the very first things I bought for the room were the colorful pillows. Then the sofa and light green chair in front of the window, then the lamp and the red end table. Once I saw them all together, I despaired that they didn't really go, that the room was turning into a hodge-podge. Then I bought the pictures, and like magic, the pictures seemed to tie it all together... (to me, anyway). From the brighter spring green of the arm chair to the cool blue-greens of the lamp and knick knacks (with enough red to tie in the end table and the pillows). So while I agree with wendyb and busybee3 that the silver sage curtains go better in the room, maybe I need to pull in more of the brighter green to keep it from going too blue, too cool? To tie in the green arm chair and the (very warm) picture over the sofa? (Not to mention htnspz's comment about there being enough brown in the room - which is actually part of the reason I decided on a glass top dining table instead a wood top table, though I guess seeing brown chairs through the glass would kind of defeat the purpose!) Actually, htnspz - you mention that I should consider a warmer color for the drapes... not a green? Is there another color you think would work?? So no one has a problem with the wood legs on the green chairs being quite a bit darker than the table? Or with the bright green chairs competing with the red end table (visible on the last two pictures)? Thanks!!!

Brutuses, I'll try to answer this as an interested consumer. I am by no means a scientist, and I can't vouch for the veracity of the tests/reports quoted in the articles I've read and linked to. If you google this, you can find a lot of alarmist type reports, which I tried to sort through and not include here. I am a fan of natural and organic, just because it makes sense. I don't want to unnecessarily alarm anyone with this info, and urge you all to do your own research on this topic. Basically, the chemical that kept stains from adhering which was used in Scotchguard in until several years ago was found to contaminate human blood and wildlife. Over 90% of the population in the late'90's had the chemical in their blood (also used in Teflon, etc). Testing revealed it to be lethal in high doses to animals, however Scotchguard, Teflon, etc used much smaller doses. The new formula does not contain those chemicals, though it has been criticized for not working as well. Furthermore, the company hadn't revealed the test results for the current chemicals, though they will say that these new chemicals do not stay in the body as long as the old ones and that the new chemicals are safe. There is some uproar over why these chemicals do not have to be proven safe before they are used and just who is responsible, if anyone, for monitoring companies like the makers of Scotchguard. The EPA concluded around 2000 (? not sure of date) the chemical was toxic and was linked to birth defects. It is no longer used in Scotchguard. These chemicals are in carpet, clothes, etc and have entered the food chain to the point of being found in baby eagle's blood (who have never left the nest, thereby leading researchers to conclude that the chemical has entered the food chain). They are not sure yet HOW these chemicals enter our bloodstreams (water, air, etc). Given this info, I'm not sure how much impact it has to choose to not use these items in our homes. Clearly, there is so much we do not have control over and therefore can't impact through our choices. Thanks so much for the feed back. This kitchen has been an evolution, it looks nothing like the vision we had. These cabinets were purchased from Craigslist so we've had to come up with things that worked rather than the vision. This site has been so helpful. When the mess is cleaned up I'll post pics. My reason for thinking about the darker fabric is that the white with red looked so stark on the dark wood as did the blue. There isn't much off the shelves in ticking. The red and blue fabric don't look very sturdy and my grandkids will be using the cabin too.

Can you take a photo, with the samples, at the same distance as the first shot? Do you plan on painting the wood frame?

From what I see, I'm not liking the stripe and not sure about the other one.

I think the stripe will compete with your rug, therefore I like the one with the dots...light, cheerful, and almost whimsical. I also think it will look nice with the wood of the chair, and if you don't paint the chair, it will show up more against the white moulding.

These are the colors I love...can you show the room when you're done??

Meh on both...the white looks too insubstantial for all the wood and the stripe looks too somber...

I am leaning toward the white/blue... although I may go back to the drawing board with the fabric. I think I may need to go deeper...

I'm thinking about doing away with the nailhead trim and adding a welt in a contrasting color. Also, the chair as it is has a solid suede back, so I can play around with a couple of fabrics. (see below)

Annie - I like that blue fabric... Maybe if I did a solid velvet on the back and something like that on the front, it would work. I have such a hard time with fabric!

The fabric on the right is definitely more unexpected and a better complement to the wallpaper. I actually like the backside of the fabric that you can see where it curls under. Great looking chair! Without question, do the contrasting welt and do something different on the back. Keep us posted!

I am not sure about that white with the wallpaper and that rug. I think the disparity between the large personality of the wallpaper and the diminutive rug, needs an in-between and I like Annie's stripe which pulls it together, rather than being a surprise. I think the various styles create the element of surprise. JMUO.

I like the idea of bringing out more of the white. Would something like this work? I like the idea that it's a traditional pattern but with a contemporary twist of color.

Went back to the drawing board and found this:

My office definitely has a more modern feel - with the wallpaper. I've always loved these french-inspired fabrics. The particular one has all the colors of the wallpaper - the rust and gold especially.

I would cover the side/back of the chair in a coordinating fabric - most likely a solid; maybe a shad of blue velvet.

Not sure if I would keep the nailhead trim - or change it out for contrasting welting (same color as the back???)
