the travertine over the fireplace is up...

if anyone remembers, i was polling on here on which to use for my fireplace, the travertine or the stacked stone. we went with the travertine and i'm in love. the mantel will be painted on wednesday (the same color as the built-ins). will post finished product later in the week. it's being grouted and you can hardly see the lines that you see in the pic below.

very reasonable price. you cant equate footage rates from a standard floor to custom applications on verticle surfaces ... they are two different beasts and the latter takes alot more time. however, if you think its too much, get other quotes ... if you like his work and trust him, use him and pay him what he wants. Remember if u price it out to lowball it, you may not get the same craftsmanship you desire.

The success or failure of doing what you are proposing will rest on 99.999% on the prep you give the slab - so your question is VERY GOOD ..... You'll need to get as much (if not ALL) of the remaining adhesive that was use to hold the asphalt tile down to the concrete - OFF. The concrete needs to be as clean and latent adhesive free as possible. IF your home is 50+ years old - there's a VERY GOOD CHANCE that the tiles you tore up contain ASBESTOS!!!! - AND the adhesive may contain it too.... THIS IS IS A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION - because of the health risks of asbestos particulates in the air, and your inhaling them. The BEST way to resolve this is to have an asbestos abatement company come in and do an analysis on the tiles and the adhesives that are on your floor - BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!!! Since the tiles (I'm presuming) are already ripped up and discarded - your only current issue is the adhesive - so you need to have it checked to see if it does indeed contain asbestos too.. my guess is - is that it will. IF this is the case - you'll need to do some research to see what your local regulations are in dealing with it - to remove it from your home. IF it is asbestos free - then all I'd do is to either - mechanically remove it - by scraping it off and getting as much off as I could - OR - have a Blast Track machine come in and blast it off and get down to smooth clean concrete - Then.... fill any low spots - put cleavage membrane over all cracks, and start setting your tiles if you are a DIYer. if not - a reputable Pro Contractor willl know how to handle this scenario and give you a finished product that you'll LOVE..... Sorry to put the scare on you with the Asbestos thingy - but the "A" word is a really big deal for us in the Industry - and should NEVER be taken lightly IMHO!!! hth kevin

There's no escaping some things becoming 'dated', although classic is so dated it's not considered dated! 'Trendy' is probably what you want to avoid. Just us: We're happy with wood floor and granite countertops. My joints object to hard surfaces except briefly and where they are a must, like baths and mudroom. The poly-ed wood flooring cleans up as easily as tile. Our granite doesn't require sealing or buffing and its natural patterning brings a lot of life to the kitchen. (It is cold to the touch and like all hard surfaces, unforgiving if you drop a dish on it -- but so is the sink!)

I adore travertine!!! I have honed travertine in my seldom used front entry. It still looks good after 12 years but does tend to look dirtier than my bathroom travertine look porcelain that's used multiple times a day every day. Killed me to make the decision to go with a porcelain travertine in the master bathroom but I'm not getting any younger and low maintenance was key. Unless I tell them, no one knows it's not real travertine (but they're not rock aficionados ;) ). I have tumbled travertine backsplash in the kitchen. With 5 coats of sealer on it, NOTHING has stained it in 14 years. Yes, I'm aware this is an old thread.

That is absolutely beautiful! Before I read your post I thought the wood was a different color stone and thought how beautiful that combo looked. I'm thinking beekeeperswife might be thinking like I was.

beekeeper: the inside surround is the slab of the same travertine that the tiles are made from...silver vein cut travertine. i would have done the whole thing in slab but it was way over our budget.

flyleft: no particular preparation. it's just painted drywall. the slab surround was stuck on w/epoxy. the tiles above the wood mantel were put on using mortar.

WOW again, srg. Just epoxy on painted drywall, and then mortar on painted drywall? Wow again. I'm bringing my husband over to see this. Of course, we have a brick monstrosity we have to tile over, but this gives me renewed energy...can't wait to see the finished-finished pics.

I love the large scale running bond...though maybe that will kind of disappear once the grouting is done. Really marvelous!
