Another Reason Not To Buy Junk Food

High levels of mercury have been detected in the corn syrup used in soda pop and condiments. There have been no recalls of any products yet.

... does one call that "junk food" ...

... or, actually - is it "food" at all?

I thought that son likes his strong ...

... but daughter likes hers strong enough to walk on!

Some sugar ... cream ... milk ... hot water are indicated!

EnJOY your JUNK (if that's what turns you on).

But ... remember ... the road chosen at every fork ...

... has consequences.

Probable ones.

And more probable ones.

Before we jump from a cliff ...

... we should check whether there may be rocks or water below (and if water, how deep it may be).

I've been successfully taking oregano oil by North American Spice Company for any type of bacterial, viral, or fungal infection since 2005. I first heard about it on a show called Know the Cause. Then my friend started talking about it getting rid of a wart on her foot that shed been fighting forever. I had a rock hard bumP on my toe and figured it would be a corn (sorry, I know this is probably gross) it had been there for about a year and I kept forgetting to ask my dr. and I bought a generic brand of oregano oil, and Rubbed a drop on. By the the end of the day it was almost gone. It didn't vanish completely in 2 days with that brand, so I bought the more well known brand, and used it for a day and it was gone. I had was hit with a bad case of strep throat shOrtly after on a weekend (I can diagnose myself, I've had tonsil ides, and strep throat enough to tell the difference) and rather than go to the ER I had my husband stop at the local health food store and get me a bottle of oregano oil. All our tiny store had was the pill form of North Americsn Spice Company brand. I already had the bought a book written by Dr Cass Ingram called the cure is in the cupboard so that helped me to know how much oregano oil I should take bi think I took a pill every hour for the first day. Within a day 24 hours I felt completely fine and I will tell you with synthetic anitibotics it takes me 3-5 days. It is effective on colds also that normally have to run their coarse. We can be completely over a cold in 1/2 the time as anybody stricken with a cold at the same time. My husband, kids and I have been using it successfully since then, and rarely go the Dr anymore. 3 of my friends use it, and 1 of those friends is a doctor. My sister, who is married to a pharmacist, uses it. Many of you have probably heard of it, or already use it, but for anyone who hasn't I wanted to explain the benefits thoroughly. Sorry so long. I probably should have said it is a powerful natural antibiotic and the first time I saw it on Know The Cause, the were touting that it had been successful in killing the bird flu in laboratory testing. I believe them. Dr. Ingram and Doug kaufmann (Know The Cause) Often appear at the "Health Food Center" on Penn in Okc, to answer questions about it and other natural health products. I would follow up by saying that anytime I take a hefty dose of oil of oregano, I always take some type of probiotic from the health food store. You can now sometimes find probiotics in a pharmacy as more people are becoming aware of the importance and the body's general need for probiotics. My brother in law who graduated from pharmacy school about 3 years ago mentioned to me that I should follow up with a probiotic after using any type of antibiotic, to help your body good bacteria replenish itself from being wiped out by the antibiotic. So I was surprised that they are promoting the use of probiotics now, because I had never had a dr. or pharmacists mention such a thing to me before. I think western medicine is slowly catching on. I just hope the pharmaceutical companies really don't gain control over all of the natural health medicines we now have the right to use.

This may sound crazy but I just got the book The Mood Cure and it is all about diet and mood disorders. I use it for both my sons. One gets depression and the other gets anger outbursts. Thankfully they both seem to react to the same foods (dairy, sugar and gluten) that when these are kept out of their diet they are balanced kids. It is a very interesting read and you can probably get from your local library. My oldest son (12) won't go back to how he used to eat as he has improved in mindset, athletics, focus and his skin cleared up so he is sticking to it. He had a major junk food addiction - well, as much as I would allow but he would always be asking for sweets, dairy and breads. I also follow this way of eating (with a few more restrictions) for my autoimmune conditions and noticed my irritability also went away. Junk food is a major issue with us and SS. His mom eats like crap--and I think, like parent-of-one (FFD) said, a lot of it is just ignorance. She is the mom who buys Sunny D or that crappy juice that's all sugared up and thinks she is being healthy, kwim? Or she will pack fruit snacks and think that counts as a fruit. They eat lots of starches, buttery pastas with heavy sauces, etc. She will fix two starchy sides to a meal---they'll have mashed potatoes AND buttered noodles with the same meal. Anyway--SS came home on Wed, after the first day of school, with his lunch that his mom had packed. He's not a big eater, so he always has leftovers. (Given the crap she sends, that is probably a good thing!) He had (and this is typical): Lunchable--one of those ones with the cheese and crackers, and a mini-candy bar. Sounds *okay* but I read somewhere that lunchables are one of THE worst lunches for your child, they are SO loaded with sodium and fat. (Not to mention the awful packaging which is terrible for the environment.) I refuse to buy them. Anyway, in addition---he had a half-eaten pack of mini-donuts, a fruit roll-up that he had not eaten, and a plastic baggie of Cheese Nips, he had eaten most of those. And a blue kool-aid for a drink. I was like "are you kidding????" So--it is no wonder he complains about the lunches I pack. On Thursday, I packed him: --a turkey sandwich on wheat bread --a banana --pretzels --small handful of Mini Chips Ahoy cookies --100% juice apple juice box Nothing freaky or outlandish, just a normal, reasonably healthy but still yummy lunch, right? I'm not some freak/sugar Nazi (hence the cookies for dessert) but come on...I try to use common sense. I HATE sending the fruit, though, because I know he doesn't eat it. :( Dinners are a struggle, too. I generally serve some kind of meat--chicken, beef or fish--a veggie, and then a side item, like baked potatoes or rice, etc. Last night, for exampe--we had grilled porkchops, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. SS ate the potatoes and complained about the rest. Funny b/c the potatoes are the LAST thing DH and I care if he eats--he could skip those, as far as I'm concerned, and just eat the meat and veggies. Oh well. We just do the best we can, offer healthy options, give him small portions and DH does make SS eat whatever veggies we serve. Good thing your stepkids are not with their BM! Sounds like it would be way worse if they were---like poor Ima's DD.

Interesting about the oysters. I would never purchase such a thing. A frozen breaded product. But we were visiting my hometown and HarborHouse seafood is there. (Delaware) I've brought back a box of frozen soft-shells that are wonderful...but while visiting we always buy fresh seafood. I expected these to be a cake of breading with a tiny oyster inside. But not at all. BIG plump oysters, light breading that did crisp nice and brown with a hot oyster not at all overcooked (being frozen.). I don't think i"ve ever fried anything. So i just used a deep saucepan...1/2 inch of mixed oils. Coconut, olive and an organic canola. Was not sure what to use but it worked. After such a good experience ordering the Thanksgiving ducks on-line, i would not hesitate ordering some oysters, soft-shells, crab. (now that a new freezer is being delivered next saturday, woohoo. I prefer to not shop distance, but now back at work full time, we could use a treat a couple times a year.

uh,and if you were to bathe in and injest saccharin(sp) for 20 yrs., you might just end up full of cancer too...just another bs made up story to get the public into a panic..typical

they want to jerk the mercury out of foods(and rightfully so),but they fail to let the general public know about the mercury in those lites that we are being FORCED to switch over to

I'm not liking those CFL's at all. I only have a few installed, and I've already blown 2 of them. So lasting 7 yrs or more.....no way.

They've caused a house in our nearby town to catch fire, while the owners were away. They are difficult to dispose of....must wrap tightly in several layers of plastic and take to the hazardous waste.

The light is hard to read by at the best of times, now on the news they say we shouldn't sit closer than 30 centimeters to the light. (12 inches) They emit rays similar to the sun and is damaging.

I like the simple incandescent bulbs, thank you very much....

Everytime one uses mascara, they have mercury right at their eyes. Might as well eat a little, as well.

I hope DD = Dilly Dally, not 'darling daughter' in Alisande's case! LOL Skeered me there for a minute! hehe...

I try to avoid the high fructose corn syrup anyhow.. but it's hard to do cause they put it in so many things. Personally though I don't worry too much about mercury.. my Dad used to bring it home from work in little vials back in the 60's and my brother and I used to play with it all the time. I figure I've already been 'poisoned'. Add to that the metal fillings I have... might explain my health problems?

Kec01, I did not know what you were referring to, so I Googled it. I guess I am out of the loop as I had never heard of the ban. I always appreciate the links that people provide to reference their posts. Thanks for the heads up on the mascara thing though.

Jannie, its not the junk food per se that is deadly, it is the fact that most the corn syrup used has been found to be contaminated with mercury.

alisande, thanks! I feel everyone's health is important and it is best to make informed choices.

ont_gal and jasdip, you are right about how lax the regulations are on somethings and this whole CF bulb thing is not the solution to the energy problem.

I wonder if anyone has started a country-wide (Canadian)petition against CFL lights...sure wouldn't hurt...and easy to do via the internet. I don't want to be forced to buy them. I don't want them contaminating our earth. Every time one breaks a hazmat team should be deployed!

I learned the hard way about mercury in mascara. The brand I had used for 20 years changed it's formula, I had awful reactions and my eyes swelled/itched, I spoke at length with the manufacturer and figured out that mercury and a derivative of mercury (thimerosol) were in the new formula. And then I found out how hard it is to find a brand that doesn't have it (go the Whole Foods route). Glad to share the wealth.
