poof+ smoke +yucky smell+flipped fuse = dead oven/stove

Couscous was done! Finished the salmon in the microwave.

wasn't too bad! lol

I discontinued consumer reports, darn. Last may and august's don't have any reviews for a DROP in oven. we don't have a wall oven or a slide in. I DO know ...that I don't want coil burners, but that's it. I'm no chef, that's for sure! lol don't have a lot of $$$ to spend.. I bet ones that offer convection are pricely, huh? it's all electric. I don't want to go with white.... our frig is white, the oven and dishwasher were black and stainless.

but white is ... ... ... so white! lol and shows dirt and I'm not always on top wiping everything down several times a day. lol

Yikes! Similar to what we experienced a few weeks ago. Yucky smell, a bit of smoke = bad limit switch... in our electric furnace. We were lucky it didn't happen in the middle of the night!

I'm wanting a new stove, the slide in. Unfortunately we use electric but I'm not sure about a smooth top. I believe I'm too rough with stuff and would surely break it.

Kat - did you check on the Appliance Forum here at the GW? Someone may have asked the same question - or you could post your own question and ask for recommendations. That's how I found the KT - I started on the appliance forum looking for reviews of wall ovens.

Your local library may carry Consumer Reports.... Also, I heard on a dyi show that if you want your appliance colors to all match -- you need to buy the same brand.... and if you have a white dishwasher, the front panel comes off & the other side is black...

We too have a POS drop in range. It has been through 3 motherboards, a igniter switch and a fan. I was sooo mad the last time, I was going to let DH take a chainsaw to the cabinets and put in a slide in. Then I measured the cabinet and there is NO way possible.

I have been trying to convince my son to load it up and take it to Broadview Appliances parking lot with a big LEMON sign on it.

Having said that, Sears has some drop ins that cost around $600. Lowe's and Home Depot have a couple in the same price range. Good luck finding a replacement!

Kat when I need Consumer Reports, I join online for $5 something a month and then discontinue after I find what I need. That way I am only out the $5.

A friend of mine gave me her sign in for her CReports online. and it had the same information as my May and
August 2010 consumer reports mag.

Maire, I did check over at the app. forum. They mostly
seem to like ovens well over $2500 !!! LOL I've been
over there before this too. Plus, I saw nothing on drop
in ovens with stovetops. It seems that the induction
might be better than the smooth top. It is more
expensive and I need new cookware, I believe.

Kathy! LOL I'm glad you posted this. I thought, well,
sheesh! I'll just take a saws all and cut out the toe
kick and get a slide in! hhahahaha.. but then I remember
ALL of my GREAT ideas, and how they end up not being
so EASY after all! ahahhaahhaaaaa...

I'm headed up to sears, and then to a local app. company.
My oven that just died, is a Whirlpool and it lasted
19 years. Not to bad, I don't think. It has the coils
for the stove top. I have an idea from CR on the most
reliable slide ins. I guess that gives me an idea.

I REALLY dislike the coil burners, but The price of
induction might make my choice for me. If I go with coils
then I could probably get a dishwasher to boot! Probably
should replace something before it dies! lol

Kat, my POS oven that has cost me so much in the SIX years we have had it was a Whirlpool. The last repair wa right before the holidays and was $380. One week later it did the F3 code again..which means mother board.

Whirlpool will never cross my entry door ever again. I have called them with every repair and they are sooo sorry, however it was only under warranty for one year.

A slide in was much cheaper, but is 32" deep. Drop in s are 21". Won't work on my island, the back of the stove would stick out into the other side big time. I was so close to that too!
Last week this one was on sale for $650, maybe you can talk Sears into it again?

Two years ago I got a new slide in range with a white smooth cooktop. I love it and it is white. I didn't think they could make this Frigidaire work where the GE was. My son in law looked at it and decided that it could be made to fit and not bother any of the drawers or anything. He of course took the old range out, which was smaller by some inches. Loosened the counter top from the cabinets and was able to pull the lower cabinets in opposite directions. There was enough overhang at each end of the counter top He first did have to cut up the back side of the island where they are, behind the range area and make the counter opening a bit deeper for the new range. There are posts on the top of the counter to the upper cabinets and those would be very hard to remove. He covered the cut at the back with a board and it is painted to match the cabinets. A wonderful and not too expensive solution. I bought my range at Lowe's on a markdown sale. I love my electric range. I hope you find a great deal on what you are looking for.
