Maybe what you need to do it is look at white kitchens with dark floors and see what they have done with their perimeter and islands. Get a feel for what you love. I am of the school that says get what YOU love not what you think others might love. If you love three different counter types go for it, or just one that's your plan. I think a very large niche...with arched top like your wall niche picture or not...could look great along that wall. BUT...only if you do something to make it stand out. I'm thinking of something like a mosaic or different tile motif similar to what folks do behind the range in the kitchen. If it is simply tiled in white subways like the rest of the shower, I fear it will also look, as you say your current shelf does, like an afterthought. But if you put some other tile in there, it could look WOW! Don't know what the rest of your bathroom plans are, so I hesitate to suggesst something specific. But perhaps picking up the tone and texture of the tumbled travertine on the floor? At the very least, I would suggest tiling the shelf of the niche in the floor tile. Your kitchen% sounds exciting. I am not a fan of 4inch b-splashes, but have seen some pretty ones. I say find a tile to match the color you love or get a clear glass type tile that can show the wall colo.r you love peeking through. That way you can have the BS go all the way up. There are even stainless steel tiles mini ones you could mix with the glass that would look nice with the SS backsplash for your range.
