I think you have to consider what you'd be storing in the pantry. If you need a place to store placemats and folded tablecloths, you might like the drawers. If you are only storing foodstuffs, the drawers might not be as useful as the pullouts.

As I evaluated my new kitchen cabinet design, I thought about everything I currently store in my pantry, things I'd like to store in my pantry but didn't have room for, and things I was currently pantry in the kitchen but wished I could move elsewhere. If you take inventory like that, I think it will help you make a decision.

This will be a food stuff pantry, but it will need to include a place for some bulk items like Costco paper towels, bottled water, soda, cereal. I know what it needs to hold, just wondering if people here prefer the stationary shelves of a pantry closet or the drawers and pullouts of a pantry cabinet?

I could also do a 12" deep hutch with no pullouts on the top portion and 24" x 24" drawers + a 24" x 24" cab with pullouts for the bulk items on the bottom. Just trying to determine what will provide the best functionality. I would not be hiding or using appliances in the pantry.

Sarchclos - will you be keeping your countertop within this space? In other words, will you be keeping your upper pull-outs and bottom drawers separated by 18 inches like regular cabinets?

As you know, I have both. For everyday food storage (not bulk items like paper towels, wax paper, etc.) I prefer my top hutch pantry. Plus, for canned goods, I can't live without my narrow base cabinet pull-out. If I had to do it again, I would put pull-outs in the BASE of the pantry hutch cabinets instead of the shelves down there. The TOP is perfect for what we store and use.

The bulk items and dog food go in a closet pantry. I know that I had the luxury of building a new house rather than a remodel and so I was able to do both.

I had a closet here and in the last house. They seemed like they should be good storage space, but they didn't work out that well for us. It ws an issue of locarion in one house and organization in both.

I took out the closet in the remodel and replaced it with a 24" cabinet with rollouts in the lower half and shelf space above and a 12" tower pullout. Everything is staying better organized, is easier to find, and I am much happier.

I probably could have ripped out the existing shelving and reworked the use of the same space, but we also moved the ovens to the spot where the closet pantry was, which gave me room to have my baking center and move my cooktop so I have an open island to work on too. For me, it was more than just the pantry style, but the result has worked out very well.

We have a 36"w x 24" d ceiling height cabinet with doors (3 pull-out shelves and 2 non pull-out shelves) on top and 3 drawers (2 deep, 1 shallow) below. It sits in between the kitchen and eating area. The shallow drawer is perfect for cutlery. The bottom drawer is used to store all our pastas--bags, boxes. The middle drawer is used for snack foods (bulky bags, bags of trail mix, etc.) The bottom 2 pull outs store canned/jarred goods(with enough space so that most cans can be stacked 2 high,) the top pull out stores boxed goods and lesser used goods (backup mayo, salad dressings, etc.) The bottom shelf is just low enough that I can reach light-weight items without a stool--a great place for cereal boxes (the shelf is deep enough that unopened backup boxes can be stored behind the ones in current use.) I need to use a stool for the top shelf and we store paper goods there (paper towels, tissues, napkins.)

This set up has worked very well for us for the past 2 1/2 years. I like having drawers for containing stacks of pasta boxes and bulky snack foods. It's much better, for me, than having these items on shelves. I feel as though the space is put to optimal use.
