Need quick opinions on upper cabinet layout please!

After using my new laundry room for just over a month, I have realized that I might want my husband to build me 8" or so platforms for the washer/dryer. My upper cabinets are not yet in the laundry room and the current design has the hanging space over the washer/dryer. The hanging space would need to be moved above the lower cabinet and sink if I was going to put in a platform.

I still might be able to have the cabinet maker swap the upper cabinets if I made a decision VERY quickly (as in today!).

Can anyone please provide an opinion on the upper cabinet layout and whether I should just stick with the current plan? (which would mean no platform) It is a possibility that I am annoyed with the washing machine height due to my dryer not being here yet so I currently have a drying rack jammed into the corner and am reaching into the washer for a couple items at a time, so it's many trips bending into the washing machine. And I'm pregnant right now which isn't making it any easier. LOL

The laundry room is only 68" deep so there's not a ton of room behind me once the large machines are in place.

I have a similar layout as yours.. if I were you I would completely switch both sets of cabinets.. the ones that are over the washer dryer, put over the sink/counter area, the ones that are over the sink/counter put over the washer and dryer. You will have a wider hanging area and still have plenty of room for 8" of platform under your washer/dryer.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to see if he can still do it, yesterday may have been my last chance.

So, you have your hanging space over the sink? Any drawbacks? The reason I put it over the machines originally is because I was thinking of things slipping off hangers into a sink of water/soap where something is soaking. Or trying to use the sink and having a bunch of clothing hanging in my face. LOL

Or that it would make my counter space less useful if I had clothing hanging above it. I'm not tall so I am not likely to use the top of the machines for folding once they are raised 8" unless I have DH extend the platform out in front of the machines so I can step up onto it to fold.

Thanks, Karen! You are right about the measurements. They add up to 9'11", correct? That means I have another foot of space to work with??? This drawing is direct from my GC! I'd better check with him. ETA: I just figured out what the deal is. There is a foot of shelf space not really marked on the drawing. The drawing's measurements are accurate as is. The tub I have picked out is 67". There is a 60" model available but was worried that that might be too small. Ducky - Thanks so much for taking the time to draw out another idea. You are right that I'm contemplating a single sink/vanity. To your other comment, I'm wondering if I'm giving up too much closet space. First off, I'm not an expert. But I do have an opinion, so take it as you will! 1. I have a slight preference for #1 because I think it might be better with the cabinet colour and my gut agrees with yours that the matte look is probably better. It might help if you could get a photo with the cabinet in as well? And my personal preference is the larger tile size of #1 as well. 2/3. I actually think the photo you have included of the glass tile alone is really pretty, though as stated above I personally have a preference for larger tiles. I wouldn't necessarily put it in my kitchen, but I would be able to appreciate it in someone else's. In the end it really depends on whether or not YOU (or your DH) find it busy. The fact that you are asking makes me thing one of you does. In that case my first thought would be to do as badgergal did and orient the tile vertically behind the cooktop only, then use your other choice between the counter and uppers everywhere else. I thought it was really stunning there... Or I might consider putting the glass tile as an accent strip, similar to the model home but following the lines of the upper border rather than just a straight line across the back Not sure if your travel schedule will include down time in airports and such, but it might help to actually colour your mock ups for the backsplash to see how you feel about the busy-ness of the tile. Any crayons or coloured pencils kicking around? It might not take you too long, and might help in the end. Good luck, hth mmhmm

Thanks again for the responses. Right now I am having trouble deciding. I will try the mock up tonight and see if that will help. Good idea. I have done drawings on graph paper and when I look at them I think that I slightly favor the look of the two doors bacause of the symetry. Holligator - Your door does not look big but I am worried that mine will actually be close to 22 inches because the cabinet is 24 inches wide. Love your cabinets by the way. Looking at literature I have from kraftmaid, shuller and diamond it seems that fewer companies make one door cabinets larger than 21 inches. Mine will be 24. Does anyone have a 24 inch cabinet with one door that they would be willing to post a picture of? Or a picture of a 24 inch cabinet with two doors? Just a thought. Thanks, Beth

With my other bathroom, I used this same gel stain and the plywood end next to the toilet was the spot I started with, and how I found this technique. I put the gel stain on with a dry brush, and coated it evenly. Then I dipped the brush in a cup of thinner and went over the whole thing, wiping off the excess onto a rag every so often. That thinned it without wiping it off. When it was the thickness I wanted - the right amount of grain showing through - I went over it one more time with just the very end of the brush and that feathered out most of the brush marks. But I sanded the plywood end on this bathroom down too much I think, and the gel just wasn't as workable. I didn't sand anything except that one end, so the rest should be easier. I also used a rag, a nylon one I think, to do the drawers and doors and didn't have any problem with it going on too thick or wiping off too much. I tried a cotton rag and it did take off too much.

Well, no pedestals for me. The cabinets are already complete. They may be able to swap the hanging bar to the left and cabinets to the right, but the hanging space is wider than the cabinets so if they swap them, the hanging space will extend 4" over the washer and the tall cabinets will start then instead of starting directly over the washer/dryer area which may end up looking like the cabinet guys didn't know what they were doing.

Just talked to the owner of the cabinet place. He said that the side are different sizes so would look offset which I think will drive me crazy and also doesn't look great for him. LOL

He did say that we could raise the cabinets to accomodate pedestals, although I'm not sure if that would work. Right now, it's designed to be 38" from rod to top of washer/dryer. If I bought the Elextrolux pedestals (buying is easier than making), they are 15" and he's only thinking of raising the cabinets 4" or so, so I'd lose a bunch of height for hanging. If we build 8" ones, I will still lose some hanging height.

And I had forgotten to consider a countertop on top of the washer/dryer which I would like. Our countertop with the sink is 2" thick, so I am either looking at adding 10" overall to the washer/dryer (8" platform + 2" countertop) or maybe I could reduce the platform to 6" and add 8" overall.
