Yes The shade should cover the switch. All you should see is the lamp not the workings.

I think it's the wrong style for the lamp - I would do a cylinder style to balance out the base.

I have to say, I like the greyer color of the barrel shaped version but I dunno about the actual shape. We have a mission-y sort of vibe going on in our living and dining rooms, which is where these lamps are. Does a barrel shape really work with mission?

The cone shape is more flattering to the base than the cylinder one. I prefer the white too. Proportion looks good to me.

I like the shape and size you bought (I didn't make anything longer, other than adding a finial to the top).

You say Mission -- maybe an earthier shade? I'm seeing Cape Code or cottage.

I think I like the white best of all, on both lamps (although the nickel lamp is probably outta here because it just doesn't work for us anymore. Too mod.)

I like what squirlheaven has done. I am having a hard time deciding between the cone shape and cylinder. I keep looking at the light fixture on the ceiling and that is a cone shape so the lamp - cone shape probably makes more sense but for some reason I am leaning towards the cylinder. I think they look great in that room.

P.S I really love the wall colors and the overall decor of the room

Oh, geez, I must have cross-posted and missed your addition of the oval, Squirrel! Actually, the idea is that we'd move the rectangular slate/glass mirror over the buffet and put the two pictures to the left of the buffet, either just by themselves or with something else added in. That poor mirror - we keep moving it! But we do so love it.

The other shape that comes to mind is that triangular Asian hat shape ... kind of like the one you have but compressed down.

So what is that funny lookin' kitty thingy? The head looks so real it's confusing :)

The funny looking kitty thing is a metal sculpture of sorts where the head and tail are both on tight springs and bounce up and down if you touch them. It just caught my fancy at HomeGoods one day, and although I just never buy stuff like that, I had to have it.

I have another which DH bought me -- welded pieces/parts. Aren't they funny??

Hey, I just watched the new lighting show on HGTV and THEY said shade should be 2-3 inches shorter than the length of the base. Also in the lamps they showed you could see the bottom of the harp. I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

I like the cylinder and the asian hat. Both look equally good.

With a mission style, you could also go with a square, tapered shade like the one linked below.
