I got The Perfrectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman.

I love it! Some people didn't care for the fact that it has no photographs - just drawings (which BTW are drawings of actual rooms & there is a reference for them in the back) but I found the lack of photos liberating for taking in all of the information.

Highly, highly recommend it. Read it in about a day and took aways soooo much information!

I just saw that book in a bookstore yesterday. The text looked good, but you're right that some people (uh...that'd be me!) prefer photos. I can still see myself getting it one day.

The store also had a real eye-candy decorating book, The World of Muriel Brandolini: Interiors. That one had not previously been on the very long list of decorating books I'd like to buy, but a quick skim, and I'd added it to the list. My list contains far too many books to be able to buy even half of them, so I'm eager to see what other recommendations people here will have.

And BTW congrats on that Christmas gift. Did you get it for yourself? ;)

I did! It was on my wish list and my DIL got it for me.

Mary Englelbreit's "Home Sweet Home: A Journey Through Mary's Dream Home."

Jen & My3dogs, if you're reading this, it's right up your alley.

Tons of pictures, lots of color, some layering. It's mostly on the country cottage decor side. Lots of printed fabric. It's given me many ideas!

If you like color & organized clutter, this is the book.

I celebrate Yule/Solstice rather than Christmas but my greenery is going up outside, just a few things on the porch, probably late next week. I have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS refused to put anything up until at the very least the week after Thanksgiving weekend, even when I did celebrate Christmas - when I was growing up, December 15th-ish was the time for decorating, because we always had fresh, locally cut trees/wreaths and not having them up for weeks on end kept them much nicer, and we didn't get sick of seeing it all :-) before New Year's (New Year's Day was always for taking down the holiday decorations with football going in the background). I still need to go dig through the closets and see if I can find my collection of stars and suns to hang in the greenery. I don't want to do TOO much outside because half our Halloween decorations were stolen (snarl)! I like a very judicious amount of lights but we have no outside outlets in this house, and we don't have outlets in the right locations inside for windowsill "candles". (I don't want to spend the money on batteries for the battery-operated ones, not to mention throwing away all the dead ones.) Plus I just don't want to store all that stuff, this is a small house and storage space is at a premium. I haven't had a tree in more than a decade, just never had anywhere to put one and don't miss it all that much; no fireplace in this house for the Yule log :-( and no mistletoe or holly inside even though both are sacred plants because it's terribly poisonous for animals, especially the berries which tend to fall off the sprigs, and the dog will eat anything biological that lands on the floor. LOL But, my church-group-equivalent isn't celebrating Yule at our house this year as we have done in past years anyway (we have always had the largest house in the group, so we have pretty much always hosted the gatherings)... we are all trooping off to another friend's house, where they have a huge all-nighter party on Solstice Night. We thought about making the (rather painful) 3+ hour drive to see my mother for Christmas proper since she doesn't ram the religious stuff up our noses like DH's family does, but decided there were better uses for the $350+ we'd be spending (2 nights in a motel plus gas/tolls plus boarding the dog plus contributing to the additional grocery bill). She usually decorated like crazy but hasn't done as much the last couple of years because of toddler grandchildren and no space for her old trick of putting the tree in a playpen and anchoring it to the ceiling with heavy fishline!

The weekend after Thanksgiving everything changes to Christmas in our family. Always has. We have 2 grandchildren whos birthdays are Christmas eve, we wind up putting up balloons and multicolored streamers in the dining room, its comical, because all around the rest of the house its Christmas. Its the way it turned out, this is the season they were born in. Since its the start of Christmas season go for it, I would wait on putting up the tree though. I agree with others, silver and golds and sparkles would really bring in the festive elegant glow an anniversary party should have anyway.

I just have a few finishing touch ups to do for my grandsons book and will send it to the printer. It's not a Christmas gift. His parents are fully aware of the book as they've been 'ordered' to send me the vast majority of the pictures. They're just so happy it's over. LOL I added the last of his birthday party pictures to the book and am waiting for the other grandma to give me one thing to add to it. Then my son and his girlfriend will go through the book picture by picture and add anything they want to it. I'll pay for their book and a copy for me. Anyone else in the family who wants one can pay for their own. They're not cheap...... I'm using Blurb to put it together. They also did the maternity book I did last year. They did a fantastic job. :)

I KNEW who got the pink tree even before I read it. I saw one at Big Lots a few weeks back, too. It was probably 6" though. My tree is white with tons of clear lights and I just love it. I always wanted a white one and now I'm happy. I've told this story before, but when we moved from the country we had a huge garage sale and got rid of lots of stuff. (Sometimes i feel like it all made it's way back home.) I sold a lot of Christmas stuff but had one really big box to keep with my angel collection, my Santas and all the pretty Hallmark ornaments my daughter gave us every year. Also ornaments from all our vacations and the construction paper ornaments the GK's made. And the ceramic tree ornament my DD made in the 3rd or 4th grade. The box was on the floor of Harry's workshop and I'd asked him 3 or 4 times to please put it on the screened porch for me, which he never did. I gave the leftover garage sale stuff to a friend to try to sell later. I wasn't home when she picked it up, but I told her it was all on the floor. Well, you guessed it. They took my dear Christmas collections and I didn't know it until I pulled out the box I thought they were in that next December and found all I had was the outside decorations. I was so sick about it I cried my eyes out. It still hurts me to this day. I just loved talking about each ornament every year and remembering where/when we got it. So now I have my white tree without a single protest!! It probably sounds silly, but they meant so much to me.

LOL, before I even finished reading your whole post, I got up and walked into the other room to grab the decorating book I bought for myself and LOVE ... The Perfectly Imperfect Home! THEN I finished reading and saw that it's the one you're recommending. I thought the no-photos thing would bother me but I'm finding that the lack of photos is motivating me to actually read more of the text, which I'm enjoying. I just finished the section on "A Bit of Quirk" which suits my decorating style perfectly, and I think is not addressed often enough in decorating books.

Another book I got recently that I liked is "Undecorate." It's somewhere in my house, can't take the time to look for it right now, but I'm pretty sure that was the whole title. Again, some quirkiness in it, which I like. :)

No, but I had something happen that has me baffled. In October or November I started receiving Martha Stewart Living magazine. Label is my name, correct address, etc. I assumed it was a Christmas present from one of my daughters-in-law and I would get a card announcing it at Christmas, so I said nothing, of course, about receiving it early and spoiling a surprise.

Well, Christmas came and went and no gift card for this magazine. I have asked each of the 3 DIL's and nope, not them. There is no other family member who would have sent it (got wrapped gifts from all of them as always) and friends who I normally exchange gifts with are accounted for.

The February issue arrived yesterday, the third issue I have received. The subscription date on the address label is October and I have received no bill, so by this time I assume this has been paid for by somebody. I'm going to call the MS subscription phone # today and see if I can find anything out. I don't subscribe to any magazines, so it's not a promotional subscription linked to another magazine, nor have I linked to any MS sites ever. Any ideas???

Patty0315, sometimes magazine subscriptions are linked to a purchase you made. Have you bought any craft items online lately? I ended up receiving More that way. I tried to cancel it because I don't want to receive it, but the magazine won't even let me cancel. I guess this process is a sneaky way to build up their subscription numbers to make advertisers pay more.

My b-day is just before Christmas, so I was lucky enough to get two gift certificates from different family members from a large book store. I went during the Boxing week sales and all hard covers were 50% off, so I got a few, here they are:

1. "Hers: Design with a Feminine Touch." (Jacqueline deMontravel) Actually my mother bought this one for me, I likely wouldn't have choses it myself. But it is interesting, here is a little more on the book: "Design your own beautiful sanctuary in any space, with unabashedly feminine style."

2. "Hand Made Home: Living with Art and Craft." (Mark & Sally Bailey) "Living with paintings, sculptures, ceramics and textiles - almost anything made by hand, in fact - will give your home a distinct personality and originality that is welcome in this age of mass production and stores full of products that are exactly the same wherever you may be." Great book.

3: "Metropolitan Home Design 100: The Last Word on Modern Interiors." (Michael Lassell) You get the idea.

4. "Scandinavian Design." (Lars Bolander & Heather Smith MacIsaac) "A ... tour of the best of Scandinavian Design."

5. "Interiors: The Home Since 1700." (Steven Parissien) This is more of a history or design school course book with many illustrations. Very informative and interesting.

6. "Salvage-Style Projects: 22 Ideas for turning old house parts into treasures for your home." (Amy Hughes). From "This Old House."
