Apparently this fella was just as annoyed as I was about all of the Craigslist postings that were so poorly written.

I only wish he'd added Dinning room/Dining room to the list.

I wonder if he'll get any responses?

I grew up calling wash cloths "warsh cloths", or say "I need to warsh my hands first, etc.. Thanks mom! LOL I still have a second of hesitation before I pronounce or spell "wash" - and mom still says warsh.

Hoosiergirl - your "Youth in Asia" mistake made me laugh so darn hard!! Your poor teacher, rotfl. How did you ever live that one down?

OMG, those cat pics are priceless . . . I'll be chuckling the rest of the day! I wish we could get a cat but both my kids, and most of my siblings and their kids are allergic to cats. What would this be called . . . Murphy's Law? The morning after I posted my response here, I walked into our laundry room closet to start a load of clothes and there in the always-present mousetrap was a dead mouse! It's been half a year since one got in there and, darn it, of course it had to happen right after DH had left for work! I could do no laundry until DH got home from work that evening at 7:30PM to get it out of there, because (sigh) there is no way I'm touching a dead mouse! I was a real tomboy growing up and still have a lot of it left in me. As a room-parent, I thought nothing of hunting down and grabbing the class's wayward 3ft bull snake that periodically managed to escape it's big cage. I still routinely rescue large tarantulas and carry them to safety in my hands. In my mind, they're just gentle little misunderstood giants. So why is it that when I see a dead mouse, I totally flip out? Not a live one, mind you, that would be more logical, but those don't bother me at all. Only the dead ones bother me. I have a real dead-mouse phobia for some unknown reason. I don't ever recall even seeing a dead mouse until we moved out here to New Mexico. Apparently my childhood home never had any . . . at least that my parents told me about. And it's not the death specifically, because seeing dead birds, animals, bugs or whatever doesn't bother me; I just feel sad for them. But seeing a dead mouse in a trap hits me hard. It's like something knocks the breath right out of me and I stand there gasping for air. It's only in the past couple of years that I've managed to not holler out loud~ once I catch my breath again~ when I see one. What I need in a mousetrap is one that kills the mouse instantly (because I truly don't want it to suffer); that is some kind of longish, opaque box that holds the dead mouse inside the box where I can't see it and don't have to touch it; that has some sort of signal (like the red flag that goes up on a mailbox when you get mail) so that I know there's one to dispose of . . . and that allows me to simply touch a button to release the mouse into a (NOT! see thru) sack. Can someone please invent one like that? I'll take a dozen! Lynn PS: A funny now, but not funny then mouse story: years ago DH, the dead mouse disposer in our family, thought it would be much more sanitary to seal a dead mouse in a small ziploc bag and store it "out of sight" in our (attached )garage's upright freezer until trash day. Bad, bad, bad idea! I found it while searching for a package of ground beef later that day. Let me tell you that for someone with a dead mouse phobia, finding one in your freezer, and actually grabbing the bag to see what it was is even more (much, much more!) traumatic than seeing one in a trap! Luckily for me (NOT for him, though!), it was a weekend and he was home. My blood curdling scream and tirade that followed convinced him that our freezer was NOT a good place to store dead mice ever again! Funny now in the telling, but I still shudder when I think about touching that baggie!

We should all look so good when we're 120! *Hijack alert* Hey I just found out that my beautiful leather garage sale find wasn't actually leather at all, it was naugahyde, and the old guy who I brought it to for reuplostering wanted $325 to re-cover it, re-tie the springs and re-do the webbing. He had some naugahyde in stock that was soft enough to "mark" when you sat on it, that is actually desirable to us crazies. And he would re-tack it, it has brass tacks too. Am I totally insane, not just a little touched? Is that a good deal, or do I need a rest in a little white room?? **back to our regularly scheduled program**

I think the gazebo is too bulky for your space, and I think it would be difficult to move, assuming you could get it home in one piece. How would you transport it, if the roof has to be left in one piece? A warning about the gazebos from Target: we bought one a few years ago and it fell apart within months. The metal structure bent in the wind, and the fabric shredded at the seams. It was a waste of nearly $200, and it was a real bugger to assemble. Of course, YMMV depending on which one you buy. I thought it was "ironic" that the instructions for that gazebo said that it was "not to be used outdoors." I swear! Like I'm supposed to put it in my dining room. ! Anyway, have you thought about a shade sail? That's what I originally wanted for our sunny deck, but DH didn't want anything fastened to our house (we have a custom log home that can't be easily repaired, if one of the logs gets damaged). I'm posting a link to one place that sells shade sails. There are many others. I think Costco may still have them online, too. Good luck whatever you decide. There are some markets and some people who bought at the top and are underwater and I feel bad for them, mostly. But stastically people buying at the very pinnacle has got to be lower than people buying on the way up and down. And there were a lot of people trying to cash in, always a risk. As well as the markets where this has happened are more likely to recover faster, D.C. Miami, L.A. So if you bought at the peak and are a family chances are you should be staying put long enough for that recovery to happen. Losing money because you over improved is a possibility in any market. I feel worse for people in places like the midwest where houses haven't seen any appreciation for years and years but now are also depreciating if you can sell them at all. That's really sort of a separate issue that tends to get lumped on as a little side note if at all, when writing and talking about the real estate market when really they are mostly talking about the big coastal city markets. In those markets, I'll bet there are significantly more who bought before the crazy boom who saw their house value go up significantly and now don't want to take a lower price than their top appraisal - or like the realtor says - your neighbor got more money 6 months or a year ago so you think you should too. In a some of these areas if you bought say 7 years ago you are probably still going to make money, or at least not lose money. And "lose money" needs to be defined. A recent dinner conversation with a friend that sold a house in Connecticut - "yea it was a rough sell, I didn't make any money" This is a house they've been in for... 15? years, knowing him never did any maintenance or upgrades......then "course I put two kids through college on that house" (not while living in the house, ON the house) Ohhh, totally different story in my mind. He made money. He's just already spent it. People in Detroit and Cleveland have not been able to do that.

Heck, I am not overly offended. I just had another way to look at it, is all. I certainly laugh at my own mistakes and make fun of my inability to process basic math skills. I have this dread that someday my phone will ring, and someone will say "Congratulations, Balego! You have just won a brand new Mustang and $10,000.00 cash! Now, all you have to do to claim your prize is answer the following skill testing question". Trust me, if that question is 2x2+4-8, I would probably not be taking home the prize. But hey, I can spell 'congratulations'. ;)

As for lyric mess-ups, the time my DH was singing "you are the wings beneath my feet" (and he was just so darn serious about it), just about killed me.

Ladynimue, the teacher's probably still telling that story! Glad it made you smile :-). I think it's a hoot, too (now). I wanted to crawl under the desk when the teacher told the class what I'd written (she thought it was so hilarious that she couldn't contain herself)!

This post has made me smile. I'm from the south (guess where???) and I grew up thinking that barbed wire was called bobwire. "What out for that bobwire fence!" Crack me up!

My SIL told me she was going on a cruise. When I asked her where she was going she said "the Grand Canyon Islands!" She has a master's degree. She's very bright she had just always thought that was the name of the island! We always laugh about that one at family reunions.

As I child I sang "as angels washed their socks at night..."

My daughter wrote a paper about her best friend who was also her "nextor" neighbor.

My church bulletin said "come to an old fashioned homecoming. At noon we'll have lunch and in the afternoon we'll have sinning". I couldn't sing that afternoon thinking about all that sinning!

I love the english language.

I am still reeling from "Wayne's coating"!

Our realtor was like that and I didn't have the heart to tell her that some of the spelling and grammar was wrong. I know, bad client bad client. Wonder if that's why our house sat on the market for 18 months?

I don't care for some of the deliberate mis-spelling that occurs today. Especially nite for night. I guess that was one of the first but it REALLY drives me crazy. Argh!

I've had my share of laughs while reading some of the CL ads. However, some people, even those with a PHD, speak very fluent English, and possibly another language or two, but when it comes to spelling, puntuation, etc. that's a different story. They'll spell it like it sounds or worse yet, guess how it's spelled. Lazy, maybe so, or feel it's unimportant on a site such as CL, a forum, or email. If they work in a professional environment, i'm sure they rely on spellcheck.

The newest phenomanon is abbreviations when texting~that's *my* pet peeve! Worse yet, using them when speaking(Grandson)!

Wonderful thread. Thank you, Reno_fan! I've laughed or groaned over many of the terms noted in this list. Abuse of apostrophes drives me up the wall, but I've almost become accustomed to the frequent use of "mute point."

I confess that I was in my 40s before I realized that the Beach Boys were singing Bar-Bar-Bar-Bar-Barbara Ann instead of "bob, bob, bob, bob, bob around."

Stumpy - hahahaha! When I was a kid I thought it was "sleep in heavenly peas!" I always liked peas very much, but had a hard time figuring why grownups wanted to sleep in them. I figured Heaven must be full of them and thought about my book "The Littlest Angel" and the pictures of him sleeping on a cloud and wondered if he should have been sleeping on peas.

Another one for me was "'round yon virgin." I asked my mom what a virgin was and she wouldn't tell me. So I figured she talked about ground round, and the song said "tender and mild" so they must have been talking about a cut of meat my mother never bought.

A lot of what makes up humor is the relief that WE didn't make that mistake. Of course, nobody dies or gets hurt from a gramatically incorrect ad, and nobody here is being mocked directly, so of course it's funny.

In the case of a woman advertising for a hired killer on CL, that's both evil and incredibly stupid and she deserved to be caught. We do LOVE to see criminals get caught before the fact for being stupid. It beats the heck out of becoming their victim.

I've worked with some of the most brilliant engineers in the country and a lot of them were "the absent minded professor." We don't have to be stupid to make stupid mistakes. We all make them.

The day we quit laughing at "dinning" and "Chip and Dale" will be the day we don't know any better, or the day we stop expecting all of us to strive to do better, and that would be a very sad day indeed.

I was a home health RN for 13 years in rural Alabama. I can't tell you how many times I looked at the directions posted on the patient's chart by the admission RN and saw: continue down the road til you see the house with the yellow shudders....

I was at a patient's home and she and her husband wanted to show me around after the visit. Her DH was so proud of the "fox shutters" . My DH to this day still calls them "fox shutters" when he sees them in Lowes. c

Years and years ago at a carnival with me, parents, aunts, uncles (all four aunts and uncles very upstanding, religious people) --- the kind of country carnival with live bands.

We were all standing in a very long line that was unruly and the people had all scrunched together about 4-5 deep.

Band off in the distance, thick crowd crunched in line and little sis decides to sing along with the band at the top of her lungs.

The instant I heard it and looked at my parents I could see they wanted to dig a large hole and crawl in. They looked totally mortified. My aunts and uncles were not pleased, to say the least.
Quite a few of the crowd around us went into a hush.

I can't hear that song today without singing it the way Sis thought it was written.
I finally found a way to embarrass my adult children -- pay back. *giggles*

Y'all made my day with some of these. I just remembered, when I was a young girl when I heard my mom talking to someone about a girl being raped I thought she was saying raked. No need to explain what I thought being raked was and it had absolutely nothing to do with sex or any kind!! Stupid me!!

I can laugh at myself and I also know I'm lazy sometimes with my spellings on this forum, so laugh if you want, it's OK, because I do. LOL

Yeah, what are 'fox' shutters? Faux shutters? Who would be dang proud of plastic shutters? That would be funny in itself, lol.

I think Oceanna made a good point. One I woke up thinking about also. If we didn't notice these things, or see the need to improve, where would we be? It's a progressive checkpoint, so to speak, and at least we can find humor in it!

I was also remembering that my brother was dyslexic (not what he was recognized for) and wondered if he would be hurt or sensitive to this sort of 'human foibles' humor. When he was young, he had actually wondered if he was 'retarded' to use his words. He was also color blind. He did enjoy physical 'foibles' comedy, though, like Dick Van Dyke, and would imitate things like that.

I would never want to enjoy or hurt someone's feelings on an honest effort or shortcoming. But, I don't think anyone here would find things like that humorous. And, we all have our struggles -- many of which are pointed out to us, unkindly, as we go along in life. Best to remember we are only human.

Sorry I should have said "fox" finish shutters. Yes they were the wide white plantation shutters. My DH has genetic vision problems and to him they look the same as the real wood. He can't understand when I "shudder" if he suggests they look good. As to the family being proud of them...well there home was very pretty and nicely decorated and certainly not my taste but then you have to also remember what most homes I went to for 13 yrs were like....dirt floors ,open fireplace, one time a pig in the living room...chickens...oh well. c

Cliff_ and_Joann, the first and last letter thing is amazing! Has anyone here learned to speed read? My hs English teacher taught us - because, he said, most of us wouldn't bother reading his assignments otherwise!

I really wish he hadn't taught us that. To this day I often read too fast and I'll often leave out words, or the endings of words, when typing -- and/or be very clipped and short with my replies.

Funny, I've been trying to remember the 'sleep in heavenly peas' thing. And that's surely what I was singing! but, oddly enough, lol, I don't remember questioning it! Maybe I liked my veggies and it made perfect sense to me!

I am always scoping out the pet section on craigslist. At least once a day I see an ad for a 'pure-bread dog'. HMMMM...is that anything like a pure bred dog, ya think?

What puzzles me are mistakes on signs that are made by professional sign makers. Also, my neighbors have a wooden sculpture on their front porch that has "The Smith's" carved into it. The craftsman carves these everyday and he hasn't figured out yet that there shouldn't be an apostrophe there? And the Smiths don't seem to have noticed either.

ROTFLMAO! I didn't know there was a thread going on about this. It's about time somebody mentioned this! I LOL daily when I peruse the CL's ads. Where are these people coming from? People, proof your ads before you hit that "submit" button. I really LOL when they list an appliance for sale that is so filthy and then they say "would really look nice when cleaned up". Well, duh, clean it up before you take the picture and heck, you might actually "sale" it! I'm glad somebody posted this thread, I've been thinking the very same thing for months. LOL Now I think I'll go have a looky at Craig's list and see if I can find me sum of them thar anteek chester draws.

How about this one? It's a dinning set WITH corn of copia. Now one like that doesn't come along every day!

Corn of copia! Wow!

Oh, and as usual, photos do not do it justice.

Claims it is from the 1840's - maybe it is. Anyone know?

I saw that "corn of copia" in the original post about the genuine 1840s set. After pondering for a while, I decided that whoever wrote that ad heard it as "corn o' copia," probably doesn't read much so hasn't seen it spelled, and was just trying to be extra correct.

You know, this sort of thing doesn't happen only on craigslist. Ahem.

I heard a great news report this morning about three guys making a cross-country trip on a mission to correct spelling and grammatical errors. It made this thread immediately come to mind. The guys carry Wite-Out, markers, ink pens and tape and have politely asked if they could make corrections on signs at shopping malls, banks, parks, and roadside cafes. Here's a link to the story:
