More bad news

Dec for my family was just crushing, now my other daughter just called to tell me that my great-grandson is being transfered to All Childrens Hospital in FL from the small hospital near their home. My granddaughter & daughter are both a mess. This little guy is only 11 months old & he is fighting pneumonia & having a very hard time breathing. I am asking everyone to please say a extra prayer for him. I hope God does not test us much more, we need a break. Thanks for all the support everyone has given to me since I have been on here.

I am a University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener in Sacramento, and it's a great program, dedicated to promoting Integrated Pest Management, efficient irrigation (critical in our drought), growing edibles, and water efficient landscapes. Our MG coordinator doesn't emphasize roses because she feels that is what the American Rose Society does with their consulting rosarian business. However, I've capitalized on the fact that four of the UC Davis "Arboretum All-Star" landscape plants are roses - three of which are OLD roses - Iceberg, Perle d'Or, Mutabilis and Pink Gruss an Aachen, and worked to integrate roses with our program. We've planted PdO, Mutabilis and White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth in our MG demonstration garden, and I've been invited to speak a couple of times to them about the cemetery garden and a talk that I give, "Old Roses for Modern Landscapes." Without my influence, and a couple of other MGs who are also involved with the cemetery, I'm not sure there would be any awareness of or interest in old roses, but we've been able to make a difference. The amount of awareness and acceptance of roses by the MG programs is really variable. The Calaveras County MG Demo garden has a whole section of found old roses (many of which we also have in the Sacramento cemetery), thanks to a couple of devoted MGs and an interested coordinator who has even come along on rose rustles. In Denver, however, the wonderful roses in Fairmount Cemetery were torn out by the MGs and replaced with a modern water-efficient landscape. Phooey. Grasses and perennials. Not really much more efficient, and much less appropriate to a historic cemetery. Interestingly enough, quite a few commercial landscapes are planted with roses in Northern California. Not Knockout, but other shrub/ground cover roses, and lots of Iceberg. Every In and Out Burger is required to be landscaped with Iceberg per the corporate headquarters! There are miles of banksiae along the freeways. In home gardens, though, they have the bad rap of requiring too much water and too much care. That's why having them on the UCD list is so important. - On lasagna beds: I just finished making a "dry bed" for my drought loving plants, pentstemmons, lavender, russian sage, and it turns out I did a lasanga bed without knowing, it is right next to an underground electrical junction box, so i removed the sod and about 2 inches of clay, then layed lots of newspaper down and filled on top with a sandy soil mix. Who knew! - On my DH and his precious lawn, I have already worn him down in they past year to having a stand of ornamental grasses to disguise a drainage culvert on the front corner of our lot - i keep adding new ones, and he seems to like it - reed feather grass, zebra grass, blue festuca and orange sedge so far : ) -On the plants I like, so far in my proto-cottage area I have several types of daylillies, echinachea, black eyed susan, hardy lillies, budleia, columbine, several types of salvia, russian sage, lavender, pentstemmons, pink fountain guara grass, parsley, variegated weigela (happy dance!- 50% off!), delphinium, and honeysuckle. I like pretty much everything except traditional geraniums and DH really dislikes peonies. I LOVE artemesia or silvermound, my who dun it dahlias - both of which are in a raised bed by the front door, and I am absolutely obsessed with my 9 little heather plants, they are the first and last thing i check every time I am outside. -On taking it slow, LOL, I have a 3 to 5 year plan! my DH still says I work too hard at it though, Every spare minute for the past three months, no kids right now, so I can do that. Jay, We hit 28 degrees this morning so it was colder here than it was there. How strange is that? Love County's Mesonet station had the lowest low for this morning when I looked at the map, but I didn't look later in the day to see if any corrected data had popped up. Sulphur and Tahlequah bottomed out at 29. We also had the highest high--73 at the mesonet station but it hit 75 at our house. From 28 this a.m. to 73/75 this afternoon was a pretty big change. I wish the weather would settle down so we could get on with planting the warm-season crops. I do have tomato plants in the ground and corn, but have been waiting to see what next week's forecast does before I plant anything more. My pepper plants either need to go into the ground or I need to pot them up to bigger pots if I am going to hold them for a while longer. Our soil temps are decent and our high temps are nice, but once or twice a week we hit the lower 30s or upper 20s. I hope you don't see the 100s in May...but it isn't like any of us have any say in the matter. We usually don't warm up as early as you do so I don't expect 100s until June. Even some potatoes that were covered with a row cover that should have given them 4 degrees of freeze protection had fairly significant freeze damage this morning when I uncovered them, so I believe the temperature was lower at the ground level than the 28 degrees recorded at 5' above ground. Debbie I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I know how you feel. I lost my mother 2 1/2 years ago and it took me some time to get over her. I am not an attorney, so I cannot give you advise. I am sure your attorney will be able to give you the advise you are looking for. My mother was 60 years old and September 24th was the day her and my father were married. My mother had kidney failure, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes. I remember her telling me a few months before she passed that she was tired of suffering and wanted to move onto to the next life. I cried with her and told her that we needed her and I did not want her talking like that. A friend of mine told me that if I were in her shoes what would I want? I then decided that I was being selfish and I would not want to live my life that way. My mother had a living will and she made the choice for us to not have her on a ventilator. That was easier for us. We were all in the room encouraging her to move on to the next life and believe me it was tough. Tears are running down my eyes as I am writing this to you. I miss her and love her so much. Set up a shrine somewhere in your home and decorate with things she enjoyed in her life. My pain was shifted about 2 1/2 months ago, Dec. 1st, 2006, when my 20 year old son was killed in a construction accident. Dominick was my baby boy. He was my Christmas baby, because he was born on Christmas. This past Christmas he was to turn 21 and boy was he excited about that. I ask the Lord every day why he took my son and not me? Again, there is a reason for why things happen and we never expect it to happen to us. Keep your father occupied and bring the family closer with weekend gatherings. I'm glad your little guy is going to a special children's hospital. That is actually good news. Babies' lungs are SO small. The new hospital will probably have him stabilized and on the road to recovery quickly. I certainly hope so. Very sorry for your distress!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It actually may be good news because your great grandson will be in a hospital where the doctors and nurses are very used to dealing with little ones and respiratory issues. It is the safest place for him to be.

Yes, it's better to have him in a larger children's hospital where the care can be more specialized. Will say a prayer for him and his family.

Terrible news but he is in the best place to get the care he needs. Sending prayers. Very nerve-wracking indeed. The expert DR's there will take good care of him. Give us an update when you can.

Poor little guy--and poor mama and grandmother, too. You'll all be in my prayers. Take comfort in the number of prayers going up for the baby. I've seen more than one miracle happen here, including one for my DB, who is now cancer free!

Sending prayers. A specialized children's hospital is the very best place he could be at the moment. I spent time with one of my nephew's at one of them the first few days after he was born, and the people there are truly God's miracle workers here on earth!
