What's to see between Mi and Dallas, Tx?

Hi, I don't know where to find information on this subject. AAA used to have a good 'tripkit'. 3 sisters and I are leaving Flint, Mi for Dallas on Sunday morning and we wanted to stop somewhere and see something. I guess even a museum would do. I know, that's pretty vague, I don't even know what route we will be taking. We are just driving south west til we get there, so any state in between is fair game. The only thing we could think of is Mammoth Caves, but I just looked at that, and there's a lot of steps involved! Help! Thank you.

You can stop in Oklahoma City, and see me! :) LOL

Honest, I will meet you, or you come to my house... and we will have some local ice cream... or I might even bake us a cake....

Then there is the Oklahoma Memorial and Museum. Very sobering. Or, you can visit and tour the State Capitol... the National Cowboy Museum, formerly called the Cowboy Hall Of Fame.

Before you jump to conclusions, what is your problem? Can you post a picture? What kind of grass do you have? and what do you want? Most of the grasses in the Dallas area will cover all by themselves if you are giving proper care. If you are not, then you will need to resod every year. We can help with proper care, too. Just need a picture to see what you're starting with.

Can I grow an Avocado, and Grapefruit tree in Dallas, TX

No on the avocado. Doubtful on the grapefruit. HOWEVER, there are a number of hardier citrus that may do OK in Dallas. Check out some of the mandarins (Satsuma, Changsha etc.) and some of the hardy hybrid citrus such as Citrandarin, Citrumelo, Orangequat, Citrangequat, Citrange, etc.). Also, you should be aware that any citrus grown from seed may take many, many years before they are mature enough to bloom and bear. If you trim them down, they may never bear. So, unless you are young, you might want to invest in a grafted tree that is capable of bearing fruit within a year or so! Unless you are happy to grow it only for the foliage. See link below. Flowering Dogwood in Dallas,TX possible?

I don't think I'd do it. I used to live around Atlanta and the during the summer of 2007 we had a very severe drought and temps over 100 degrees for two weeks. (Normal Texas summers remind me of that drought.) The dogwoods were dying left and right unless the owner irrigated them. I spent so much time keeping my dogwoods and azaleas alive that I had little time left for other gardening that summer. As it was, the trees lost many of their leaves early that year due to the high temps. Also, dogwoods need an acidic soil and I understand there's little of that in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

The location of his work is the most important thing. He can have an hour commute one way in certain areas just going what would normally be considered a short distance. So that is why we keep mentioning that. Some areas around there have grown so so fast and the road ways gave not grown enough for the population. Finding out those things will save him time and lots of frustration, all of you because anyone driving will be frustrated. I loved the area we lived in and traffic was not as bad out there but my husband worked in Plano. He did have an office in Grapevine and in Dallas proper, he hated the days he had to go to them for meetings etc. Seriously you need to pack a lunch for some trips around DFW. It's just a very large area geographically and heavily populated.One of the bbest things my agent Donna did for me was get a big map of the DFW or just Dallas with each smaller city well marked so I could easily and quickly get a grasp of where each one was. If she said we are going to be looking in Allen today I knew where that was in relation to the city and his work. It's essential in a spread out area like Dallas. Get one of those maps! PS don't be alarmed when you look at a complete map of the DFW area and suddenly realize it is a giant penis! The first time I realized it I freaked out a little! Once you live there and see it over and over on the news and weather it is less of a shock.

If you go through Springfield, IL go to the Lincoln Museum. It is very interesting. There has been a renewed interest because of the movie Lincoln. Worth a visit. Branson is fun too.

you could go through Memphis and catch some music and dinner on Beale St and visit Graceland.

Besides the Cowboy Hall of Fame, OK City also has a beautiful botanical garden.

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. You never know, you might get lucky.

Linda, it is to cold, for the botanical garden... but one could go to the Christal Bridge gardens... an indoor option.

Watch the weather on a daily basis. Do you have a GPS system? As you enter each state stop at the visitors center. Even the rest stops will have some help. When you get gas/eat, ask if there is anything special in the area. If you belong to AAA they have a good Atlas. Try to stay on the major roads especially if there are storms in the area. Your big truck stops are good too. I tried looking it up on my maps but am missing one. All I can tell you, it is a long way. Have a great trip.

Thank you everyone. This was interesting, I'm glad I asked. If I get my way we are stopping in Branson. It sounds like an expensive town, but at least we can see a little of it. Some of us have already been to Nashville, Memphis and I went to the zoo on my honeymoon in Oklahoma City about 52 years ago. (We were both in the Air Force in Texas and that was all we could afford!) Thanks a lot!!
