It's probably because so many women have, at the very least, polish on their nails which prevents being able to see the moons, or they have acrylics, silk, or some other type of false nail; so the doctors can't see the actual nail bed.

Yes, that's quite possible. Or........it could be because it takes too much time, and they might have to look up from their laptops. Sigh.

Lydia, that's an interesting site. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but it made me relieved that (except for the ravages of Raynaud's, which are considerable) my nails look pretty normal. Yes, I have moons.

I just remembered that when I was a small child (in the late 1940s) women sometimes left the moons bare when applying polish. Anyone else remember that?

I remember that alisande! My mom used to polish my nails that way.

I only have moons on my thumbs- I have weak nails, they bend!

I have moons when I bother to push my cuticles back. I am very fortunate to have naturally white tips. If I were so inclined I can get a French manicure look by just putting on a coat of translucent polish.

My nails are very broad though and I don't find my hands to be a feature I wish to call attention to.

Wow!There sure is a lot of info in those little buggers. when I have my yearly physical, my Doc looks at my nails, and I've wondered why. Now I know. Mine seem to be pretty normal except for moons only on my thumbs, and the nail on my right index finger always grows like a talon if I let it get long enough. I know, TMI. LOL Dottie

I have noticed "ridges" on my nail bed for some time now. They call them central ridges on Lydia's link. I wish I could get rid of them.

Out of my ten fingers, I have moons on 5. When I let nails grow naturally, they have ridges. I get manicures and do a lot of buffing, keeps the nails looking pretty neat.

Facinating!I have pale moons and some ridges. I never put polish on the moons; polish has always made my nails weaker and I have only recently used some because it has become such a struggle to "have" nails, especially on my middle and ring finger of my right hand with ridges and chanels etc. What is facinating is that my recent back surgery which had a 10 year "lead up" time, caused bowel, bladder and more problems and (in hind-sight) sound just like the long journey with my nails. Today they are all beautiful...17 days into my recovery. (Some of that is little or no housework for the last 2 months.) Very interesting information. Also, my MD (a 65 year old man) always checks my nails... every time I see him and I do have diabetes. Nanny

Moons only on my thumbs! Seems to be a common occurance. I have huge ridges on my nails and they split very easily. I had gels applied about 2 1/2 wks ago just for the sake of having decent looking hands. I can say I'm enjoying the look! Everyone has comnmented on how great they look so I guess they make me feel pretty!

I also remember my mom doing her nails and skipping the moons! Wow. That was way back in the late 60's!!

I don't have any moon,but when i was going thru chemo,my nails were BUTT UGLY.They had grey lines,ridges red spots,and were downright ugly.Yet they were sooooooo strong and grew soo fast.One day i actually used my thumbnail to screw a loose screw back in,that's how strong they were.Now they are back to normal,still grow fast,but seem to break easier.Super glue has become my best friend as my thumb nails always seem to get breaks in them way towars the back of the nail,so i super glue it til it grows out far enough to cut it off.

I only have moons on my thumbs. I remember women not putting nail polish on the moons too. It's a strange look.
