Comments (26)Libby, the beadboard was super easy. Dh is handy, but by no means a pro. And it's a project he's never taken on. We just bough a couple sheets, and he cut them to size. Then nailed with a nail gun. Chaulked around the seams, and put a little piece of trim along the bottom. We also used the zinser primer. And BM satin impervo. We painted the boxes ourselves, and had a painter spray the doors. I love the finish done by spraying it. But, I probably would have been ok with brushing it on ourselves. Because you have SS appliances, I think yours will look amazing. I'm not a fan of white appliances and white cabs. But, I did it anyones. Just to kill off that oak :) we used two colors, BM white dove for tops, and BM baby fawn for bottom cabs. They're too ligth on bottom. Didn't do what I was wanting. So, we'll re paint them whenever I realize I can't stand it any more :) I'm a little over the whole thing for now, lol few before and after beadboard...See MoreAdvice on cabinet refacing?
Comments (25)I would try to fix the existing doors on your cabinets. I had an 80s kitchen with the melamine and oak cabinets. For my remodel, I tore out all the old cabinets and replaced them. But I save some of the original cabinets, and put them in the utility room behind the kitchen. I painted everything with something called "Grip and Seal Latex Stain Killer" by Coronado and then had trim board nailed on to the old cabinets (to mimic my new kitchen cabinets). Then I painted everything the same color as my new kitchen cabinets (Benjamin Moore Collector's Item) and used the same cup pulls and knobs as I did on the new cabinets. I'm really pleased with how everything came out. So pleased that sometimes I wonder why I didn't just leave the old cabinets in place and fix them up. Here are some pictures. Original kitchen cabinets: Redone cabinets: Just one thing. When the trim was added to the cabinets, they stuck out just a bit farther than the drawers (which were only painted). So I put a little block at the back of the drawers to make them flush with the cabinets. Hope this helps. Anne...See MoreOak cabinet restain-before and after pics!
Comments (26)WOW! You're a super hero! That's such a difficult undertaking! Oak is HARD to work with and yours turned out beautifully! After all that hard labor you deserve whatever granite makes you happy. Congrats on your gorgeous cabinets! They look brand new! I love the cathedral arch and that you have a bit of a doggy print. It makes it so yours!...See MoreKitchen Cabinets Refacing—Need help choosing a color!
Comments (7)I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who responded, especially live_wire_oak and millworkman. I took both of your advice. I hired a color consultant, per Live_Wire_Oak suggested. The consultant came up with colors for throughout the house, including a lovely creamy white for the majority of the house. Once the walls were painted, we realized that the backsplash needed to change (as Millworkman suggested). Chose a beautiful blue glass subway tile which brought out the blue in the granite and the lighting. We are so pleased with the way the kitchen turned out. Hiring a color consultant was the best $$ we have spent on our house. Thanks everyone!...See Morejessie21
