free, easy , cut and paste, ability to make folders. , searchable, shareable , accessible and FREE

I helped beta test a recipe storage site several years ago. It's really dorky looking, but it's functional and easy, if you want a site that's easy to share from. I use the search fairly often, plugging in the ingredients that I have on hand...many of the recipes are people's tried and true favorite recipes.

I save them on my (external) hard drive, as either a Word document or PDF file, I also have them on my iPad, through a program called Documents to Go. And I save them to a jump drive, which I keep with me.

I have been through all my recipe boxes - my mother, my grandmother and mine - and scanned or retyped the recipes so they are readable. Some great old favorites.

Thanks for your helpful answers. Recipe circus looks "cute" and easy but since its so unknown etc I'm afraid I'd put all my recipes on there and then they'd go away. I'm not a bigg fan of word and thumb drives ...I've looked at google docs and researched and I think it's the way to go. Thanks again.

I've used Google docs, now drive, for a number of years too and it works really well for me. I love that I can be at the grocery store and pull up a recipe on my phone to see if I need to buy anything or that I can access a recipe while I'm at a relative or a friends house. Wherever you are that there is a wifi connection, your recipes are there too.

I use Pepperplate that links to my Ipad. I'm very happy with it.

I use a blog. Every time I test or invent a new recipe I like, I post it there, sometimes with photos, and I am, little by little, transferring my older recipes there. Each recipe is in an individual blog post and I use plenty of tags to categorise them so they're easy to find.

You can make your recipes completely public on a blog, restrict access to members, or have them completely private.

Have any of you used sites for a long period of time? I've tried to keep a thing or two, and it gets shut down. Not recipes, but still... I'd hate to lose it all.

So Word on an external drive isn't best? Of course, your'e asking the wrong person, I print them all. I have many notebooks. Many. Even after I culled!

I also use Google Drive. I cut and paste from other recipe sites, and sometimes type in my own. I also could scan mine, but haven't yet.

I like it because I can get to them anywhere I can get on the internet, and I can attach them to an email to share.

There's also Evernote. It's free and you can access your stuff from anywhere.

I think it depends on if you want a place to store recipes for personal use or have them online to share. I use Drive, but I need a website I can point people to that doesn't require passwords or sharing. (Saves a ton of printing costs for food preservation classes if I can just give them a link).

Rob, I've been using recipecircus for about 12 years. It's functional and stable and probably hasn't changed in all that time. For other (philosophical) reasons, though, I have been looking for a different place to store my recipes. And it's silly-looking, lol.

I downloaded a couple of apps to my Kindle, including one that can import my MasterCook files, but they don't do everything I want.. I've also been playing with kindlecooking.com...recipes are stored online and can be accessed by registered users and you can save everything to a kindle .doc. Not sure what I think of any of them yet. Fun toys, but not exactly what I want so my stuff is still on that silly looking recipecircus.

Netla, I've been thinking of moving my recipes to a blog, also. I am learning how to make one so I can teach a beginner class on making a blog, lol. It seems very 'organizable'.

The growth in digital information is astounding, electronic archive storage as well as information random access (Google, Yahoo, etc.) all require investments in very expensive hardware.

There have been great advances in compressing more and more binary bits magnetically and optically, but there are physical limits on how small and how fast we can make things. There are also limits on how much digital bandwidth wireless waves and fiber optic cables can carry.

I donâÂÂt know when we will reach these limits.

At some point sooner than we like, there will be no more free uses. We may have to pay for everything, including remote recipe access/storage.

I use pepperplate.com. I love it! I can access it from my laptop, my iPad, or my cell phone. DD has the password, too. So if she wants one of my recipes, she checks there first. If I'm at the grocery and get a yen for xyz, I can look up the recipe on my phone and gather whatever ingredients I don't already have on hand. Btw, it works equally well on Apple and Android products.

Well....last night I posted my thanks, bbstx, but it didn't make it to this thread. I joined pepperplate.com yesterday and have been adding my favorite recipes since. I plan to only add my tried and true recipes, many of which come from the folks here.

I just signed on to Pepperplate last night. Might just be the thing. I first heard of it on Chowhound and watched the Youtube link. Now i need an under-mount system to hold my ipad off the counter...

I have a one gallon zip lock bag devoted to my iPad when I use it in the kitchen.

Do you mean 1840's? About the first quotation on Netla's blog? From Shirley by Charlotte Bronte?

Off topic but interesting: I just looked up the novel on Wikipedia, which says it led to the popularity of Shirley as a woman's name. I think this is wrong: Shirley Temple is the inspiration for all the Shirleys, at least the American ones. Baby Name Wizard says the novel made the name a girl's name. The graph shows it almost unused until the 1920's, and then in the 1930's it is is 4th most popular name.

So far PepperPlate is a winner. I like the simple format...easy to read and navigate. With the 'add to Pepperplate' on my bookmark bar, when i search for an ingredient recipe and see something worth saving i just hit that on my 'bar' and it automatically adds it without copy/paste. No longer have the adds popping up.

customizing a grocery list seems to be handy for us. If i stumble across a wadded list in my dresser from a year ago, it is about the same list. Plugging in all our standard things we purchase and have them organized by isle/type, might save us from missing something. (just realized i was out of corn tortillas for tonights tacos)....I'll just make an arugula salad and croutons for the warm smoked pork...rather than run out and waste the shopping time. Once it is set up and DH has it on his phone, he can scan the list when he stops on his way home.
