School Uniform Advice

Not sure if this is the place, but I will give it a shot. My son starts Kindergarten this year and will be wearing uniforms. White tops, navy bottoms. My question is: Should I go with more expensive tops that have stainguard (GAPshield tops at $15 a pop) OR less expensive tops (Target at $5 each). Does this shield stuff help that much? Suggesions? Opinions?

Just my 2 cents...I have lots of experience with this topic! I started out buying the Gap/LLBean/LandsEnd shirts until I realized some of the "washable" markers, paints, etc., the kids were using in school didn't always come out. Then I switched to the Target shirts. If things didn't wash out, it wasn't as much of a loss. Plus, they lasted just as long, or longer. I was able to pass down many of the shirts.

I did buy pants, however, from French Toast or Flynn & O'Hara. Double knees, super sturdy. Easy to care for. Those things definitely outlasted the kids! I'm pretty sure they have some sort of stainguard on them. I admit, though, I never looked at Target for pants.

i don't put much stock in GAP shirts. the quality just never seemed to fit the price. thought it was just me but then my cousin mentioned the same thing. my son starts kindergarten in the fall as well ...in a uniform. my plan is to buy LOTS of shirts.

Well just about everything sems to have been covered already but I can throw a couple of things into the mix to help. 1> Sawdust/shavings from the woodshop are great, but try to avoid using the plywood or particleboard shavings as plywood in the US is still generally made using formaldahyde 2> Since the piles take time to grow to a decent size before you start a new one have the kids bring in ALL their family's compostible waste for a few weeks in a closed bucket. That will jump start the first pile for you quickly so that next year your kids will have something to look at ealier than if you can only feed the pile a bit at a time. Same goes for adding the browns for the first few weeks. 3> I personally use a removable 4th side on my bins, more for looks than anything else (otherwise my dog would spend all day rummaging around in the pile for fun!). You might want to do this with your one just for neatness and as a way to help keep kids from getting too "messy" when they turn the pile. Since you are at a school there might also be something to be said for "dressing" the outside of the bins if you think it would be better. (this is purely asthetics). If you get that first pile built up quickly then the kids will get more enthusiastic next year when the pile is ready to use. Kids aren't exactly patient and compost takes time! And if you bring Lloyd on down, don't let him fly, ask him to drive down with 10 cubic yards of compost for you!

If you plan to plant groundcover around a narrower footpath, vinca would do quite well. You can't kill the stuff. With a few taller shade plants here and there you could have quite a pretty little path. Sometimes tree surgeons give away wood chips, which you could use for the foot path (but be careful - some chips are so large and coarse as to be unusable - check first!) And you shouldn't need to buy pachysandra or vinca - it's easy to find for free. When you're ready for it, post a request with your location in NJ. Good luck with your project. MsB

Send a letter home to parents asking them for donations of plants or bags of dirt. Many people have extra plants or can make divisions and would be willing to donate a few for the school garden. Especially if you explain the educational benefits. This may not help you now, but later you could introduce some botanical lessons by showing them how to propagate the plants to make more. Once you've gotten a few for the garden you can use them as stock plants. Ladybug's seed suggestion is a great idea. You could offer to make plaque with the names of all nurseries who donated plants or materials for the project.

Why Uniforms should be banned Why? Why should we the children of Calderstone (or any other school) endure this torment! For doing nothing but just practicing our constitutional rights as a citizen or our independence as people. Is our error that we wish to communicate our selves through our outfits? If uniforms are going to be placed then you are removing our free will of expression. I demand a stop I will give three logical justifications on why we shouldnt have uniforms. The foremost reason concentration within the classroom, the second reason the cost of placing this/purchasing this "so-called helpful rule", to finish I would want to state the behavior inside the school as well as outside. Firstly I would want to clearly state my first reason which is concentration within the classrooms. How does concentration increase due to wearing a school uniform compared to a normal outfit? There is no research testifying in favor of higher levels of concentration but there was a research conducted by David.L from the University of Alabama which was a experiment of concretion and the relationship of clothing the result of the experiment was a fail that uniform didnt raise concentration or raise academic levels. Research aside many Principles of schools assume wearing a uniform increase concentration because a child doesnt have to worry what to wear etc. This is bunch of rubbish, children focus better in a comfortable environment and also a comfortable outfit which they will have a decision too. In addition concentration is a choice of a person its a persons own will to concentrate and focus clothes dont make decision people do. It is already hard to for a child to keep his concentration does wearing uniform have a special power that makes kids in to obedient robot? Lastly I would want to say uniforms will only make a child more aggravated and really getting them mad to due the fact of wearing the same thing every day. Secondly I would like to discuss about the money wasted on something so useless. From a finical point of view the argument in favor of having school uniform doesnt make sense either. Believe it or not to make a custom made uniforms cost a lot of money due to the fact that they are produce in limited numbers and that they are made by polycotton and not by cotton. Also many parents are saying that because their childs school has uniform they dont need to buy as much clothes. Well they are wrong because not only does the parent have to purchase the school uniform for winter, summer, and sports but has to buy other clothes for social gathering and going to the mall etc. So you are spending more money rather than saving it! Plus school also tries to make a profit out of the sale it creates. So therefore from a consumers point of view it a huge loss. Lastly I would want to state that the behavior issue with some people say has been resolved with uniforms. Many teachers as well parents say that bulling issues have been solved well they are wrong like I stated in my first paragraph clothes do not control what a person does it is the person own will to decide what to do. In addition many school have uniform to stop kid from showing gang colors or any other misconduct well I would like to say again they are fully wrong it is proven that kid are more often to join a gang due to represent a school, or a city they are from. Furthermore to my argument kids will try to rebel against this act and will try rebel until they get it their way. I can agree if a stranger were to come in the school you can easily tell if he was a stranger because he isnt wearing a uniform. But with all the staff and janitors in the school dont they need to wear a uniform too. It really seems unfair that the staff doesnt have a uniform and we do. I would like to conclude that have a school with uniform would have huge disadvantages. If you want all kids to have the same clothes why dont you make our hair color the same to. They way I would descirbe a school uniform is a disciplinary fashion. Thank you for you time on reading my essay im only 13 and i strongly disagree on uniforms.

A trick I used was to buy an extra shirt or two, or just reserve one, for "good" rather than rotating through them all insdiscriminately. Since over time they all acquire some signs of wear, having one that is not used as much makes it possible to have one that is in slightly better condition than the "average" ones. Towards the end of the school year I just added it in to the rotation so as to use it up before it was grown out of. There are always some days (class trips, plays, classroom open houses etc.,) when you wish you had a really nice shirt and this keeps open that possibility, longer, IYKWIM. I just sewed at loop of colored seam tape to the label so it was easier to identify.

I foundthat the Target Cherokee brand held up as well as Gap with stainguard. In fact, the stainguard treated shirts didn't hold up any better then the others, and my Gap ones developed an unattractive yellowish tint. It is a great idea to keep one shirt separate so it will be nice for picture day, etc.

I also found that oxi-clean worked really well on stains for the shirts, and that the pants hold up much better if you don't put them in the dryer.

Target brand has held up well. They have a stainguard in them if you get the uniform shirts and their pants do also. We bought several pairs of uniform pants at a uniform place with the double knees and my son hated them because they were so stiff. I never could get them to soften enough through washings and fabric softener. He is not normally a picky kid so I would suggest having your kiddo try them on before buying a bunch if you think that might be an issue for him. Also we found out that it's not easy to find the right shirts and pants inexpensively after school starts-- target only carries them for a short while -- we had to buy a shirt at a uniform store and I didn't care for it as much. I found that having lots of shirts in rotation meant that they didn't wear out too fast. I used Downy with Whitening on them and they made it through a school year looking good. Lands end has great quality shirts and I buy them when they are on clearance at nearly the same price as target shirts.

I second the previous post, and recommend buying on clearance. I prefer Gap and Lands End for my son, but price is more of a factor to me than label (including quality issues) as he is an 'all boy' 7 year old so likely he will either stain beyond repair or outgrow it before the life of even the cheapest of shirts.

I also keep back one or two nice shirts as previously posted. I recommend using the most gentle of detergent to delay any fading on the navy trousers.

Yes! Definitely have a shirt or two in reserve for "special" days. I also meant to suggest turning the shirts inside out when washing and drying. It seems to help keep them from developing so many "pills."

Amy-you're right about those pants! You can practically stand them up instead of using hangers!! I'm surprised that doesn't bother my boys, now that you mention it!

Also I meant to mention that I read a comparison on polo shirt quality (they did test men's, not childrens but I would imagine they are similar quality by brand)Land's End was #1 and Target Ultimate was #2. When they did an overall comparison with a price consideration Target came in #1. My boys are allowed white or the school 'green' color polos -- I am amazed at how much better the green ones have held up.
