Heat Pump defrost cycle, eliminated

Can I run "heat trace" wire up and down the outside of the outside heat pump coil on my Miller self-contained unit, connect it to a temp switch or thermostat or temp controller or even a dew point instrument, with the sensor bulb laying against the coil, set at the proper set-point temp, and dis-able the units factory defrost circuit, could that possibly keep frost and ice from accumulating on the coil? P.S. And would the Freon flowing through a warmer outside coil, on heat-pump mode, possibly cause a more efficient, warmer in home temperature?
