wood ceiling/wood floor/cabinet color?

I am wondering what y'all think about color when you have wood in the kitchen.

I have clear knotty pine cathedral ceiling, wood ceiling joists stained to match knots (soon) and then a darker wood floor.

I have thought of painting the cabinets creamy yellow but then get stuck on the wall color.

This kitchen is a summer kitchen and I'd very much like it to reflect the colonial times while using the new. I will have antique kitchen "stuff" on shelves to decorate.

So what are your thoughts on cabinet color and wall color? I do like yellow and have some blue to accent it. There is a red brick fireplace in the room as well.

Wonder what it would look like to have the cabinets and wall the same color but a couple of shades lighter on the wall. I'm thinking that in such a small space it might help.

I would love to see your kitchen pics of floors that are different wood color than cabinets. I have blonde maple and am going to install Uniboard Brazilian Cherry on floors. The tone is a medium shade for cherry. All the experts tell me the contrast will be great. My counters are black corian and it is a really spacious room. The floor color will be awesome in rest of house but kitchen contrast still scares me. Any pics of your contrasting rooms would be greatly appreciated.

OMG, how beautiful! normally I don't go for rustic floors, but this house is perfect for it! light oak with a very slightly whitewashed / greyish tone rather than amber, and just a little distressed. like the "beachy" look. this is a trendy flooring that might be fleeting in popularity, but I think might come across as timeless in your southwest home. the distressed finish will be a nice bonus -- if you scratch it, it'll seem intentional! I grew up in NM and have seen many historic homes all around that area. I think a greyer distressed floor would look pretty authentic.

Your floors look fabulous...great job! Whatever color you decide to do on the ceiling, I like your original idea of tongue and groove. I think the contrast of direction of lateral tongue and groove planking with the linear floor planks could give some nice "movement" to your space, drawing the viewer's eye upward and providing a sense of a less "static" space ...one that is less "heavy" ...more "rustic with a touch of elegance" than "Tudor." Definitely uncover the rest of that stone chimney...that would also draw the eyes upward. It's always difficult to sort through the opinions of others, because we all tend to have different filters and preferences. I think you seem to have some good instincts...you chose this space, after all, and you have the bones of a great room. Take the time to figure out what you ultimately are shooting for and run with it. and congratulations on a house with great bones!

ok fine you can work w the floor....part of your inspiration pic is smudged pale bleached looking surfaces.....floors and cabs probably with light filled space w windows and natural light. i see one window in your space...not really the kitchen w blinds drawn as well..the island is closest to the light...can the island be bigger...... using the inspirat part there and perhaps white against the walls....this can land you in a nice position. Designers help w what you have in reality and extracting from the inspiration you provide.

Ellie , have you looked into the milk paints ? I think using it on your cabs would be so pretty in the setting that you have. You could actually use a lovely pale yellow on the walls and a washed out blue for the cabs. You could take your cue from the eclectic mix of things you are going to decorate with. Use them to pick the shades of colors to use. I think you can really "play" in your special space. c

You already are surrounded by a lot of "yellow" in the pine. It wouldn't have any contrast if you also used yellow paint unless you did a very deep mustard color, and even then it might not be enough. Blue would be great, or red, or green or even the right purple! :)

I have a ton of knotty pine in my lake place....all original from 1952. I went with a cream (but really it's almost yellow) cabinet with a copper glaze. My knotty pine is on the walls of adjacent rooms. I have none on the ceiling, so my situation is different from yours, but thought I would post a pic to give you a thought. I have since gotten a redwood island top in an end grain pattern.

BP: Gosh, at first I thought those were your kitchens, then realized. Nice pics and thought provoking.

GD, that is really the issue here, how much yellow would be too much or would it matter, being that high up on the ceiling.

PW: love your beadboard island.

Oh my gosh, I can see why this forum is addicting and now the choices. Better made with lots of opinions though.

Say, most of y'all don't use your real name on this forum yet it doesn't seem "stalker prone", lol. Well, too late now. Interesting though.

Thanks, will keep thinking and hoping that others will chime in. Of course, the floor color will make a difference too.
