Boxerpups! Frameless inset cabinets photos pretty please!
Comments (21)Yes, Live wire oak is correct, there is a class of cabinetry called frameless inset. There is no faceframe, just the edge of the plywood box is visible (always 3/4" plywood). The strange bit is when two cabinets abut, and you are treated to the view of two adjacent cabinet edges, and there is an objectionable seam. If the cabinetmaker was up to it, making runs of cabinets one-piece would permit the "doubling" to be eliminated. If you look at the Blum website, there is a hinge made just for frameless inset types. Casey...See Moreinset v. full overlay cabinets
Comments (5)I'm not a fan of seeing hinges, so I like inset cabinets with concealed hinges but not so much the ones with visible hinges. (With concealed hinges you can change your knobs and pulls and not worry about matching the finish of the hinges.) This is a bit speculative, but it seems that inset doors could require a higher quality of craftmanship because they are tightly fitted within the opening. If a door is just slightly off or a hinge is loose (causing the door to hang crooked) I think you'd notice it more with inset than overlay because you'd see the dark inside of the cabinet through the space between the door and the frame. Neither of these would prevent me from getting inset; just things I've noticed....See MoreHave you/would you forego inset in an island for space?
Comments (7)I have plain on the perimeter and raised panel on my island and breakfast room hutch, but they are different finishes (cherry island and painted cabinets). An island is the perfect place to use a second finish without it being too much. I think mine helps ground a room full of white cabinets and it ties the kitchen into the adjacent breakfast room and family room with the wood tones and brown in there -- without making it the great hall of brown. But a different finish doesn't mean it has to be stained. You can use a different paint color -- a neutral black, white or cream, a complimentary color to the one on the perimeter or even a darker or lighter shade of the same color. It's one of those things that can give the room and unique touch and make it your own....See MoreFrameless Cabs that look like Inset?
Comments (9)Hmm, I think I know what you're talking about. We have frameless cabinets and with filler (in certain areas) it does indeed look inset. Look at the cabinets above the oven and refrigerator and the glass-fronted cabs to the left of the fridge -- see how they have the filler all around, reminiscent of inset. Our fillers are for insulation purposes [called out in the specs of the oven] and the box around the fridge. The v. first time we met (in person) the man who would make our cabinets for us it was in a kitchen where he'd done all the cabinets with filler so they looked "inset." That's not what I was after -- I wanted all that space (no space wasted on filler!) and when I think of inset I think of exposed hinges. That being said, I have to say that the cabinets pictured above look terrific, nothing flimsy or cheap (re: alex399's comments they would only be fit for a "basement rental ... or a blind man's home") about them. To each their own!...See Moreplllog
