What kind of floor protection in office

I'm trying to decide on what type of floor protection to get to keep the roller from our office chairs from ruining our new laminate flooring. I know the laminate is super durable, but as much as we roll around in our chairs I'm still afraid we'll damage the floors.

I was just wandering what it is that you use, if anything under your office chairs. The way our office is set up, our desks are on opposite walls from each other. Our backs are to each other. I don't really care for rugs, but thought in this room it might be a necessity and I could get one that would run from the front of one desk to the other, over the middle of the entire floor. It would definitely look pretty, but I'm not sure if a rug would discolor the flooring over time.

A rug will not damage a laminate floor - you are thinking perhaps of how a rubber-backed rug stains vinyl floor.

A good laminate floor doesn't need any protection from rolling chairs. Good laminate is just about bulletproof.

I use a large vinyl mat on my hardwood floor. It's cut so part of it fits the floor area inside the knee-hole of the desk. The remainder is large enough to accommodate a fairly wide range of rolling around. I bought it at an office supply store, but they are hard to find. More common is the same mat with little spikes on the underside to grip a carpet.

Agree. Get a clear smooth one and NOT one with those dimples for grabbing carpet underneath or it will look like someone went running in golf shoes under your desk. Put your nice area rug UNDER the pad.

What kind of flooring for home office?

I think tile that is not slippery would be great for a home office. I would be considering tile in my home office if I was not using my living room and dining room as my office and if I did not live in a townhouse. I would have problems selling my place if I put tile in any room other than my kitchen, foyers, bathrooms and laundry room since I live in a part of NJ that uses only hardwood floors, laminate or carpets in these rooms. But if I had a big enough house that I planned to live in for many more years, I would not hesitate to use tile in a home office since it is good for the equipment to not have a thick pile carpet there like I have now. If you choose a carpet, I would buy a berber carpet with a couple colors in it that are neutral to not show the dirt since equipment causes a lot of dust. If you choose tile, you can always buy an oriental rug or some other low pile rug to put over the tile to warm up the room.

IMO a rug is not necessary to protect the wood floor. I also installed wood floors when I remodeled and they still look fine. I actually think a rug might cause more issues than prevent because you might not notice damp spots or spots with the rug. With the wood I can immediately see if there is something on the floor and just wipe it off. You have to clean around and deal with a rug and I love the clean expanse of the wood and see no reason to break it up with a rug that serves no purpose. Also some rugs cause issues with wood floors. I don't recall which kind - obviously not the kind of classic good quality area rugs one puts in a living room but some of the inexpensive synthetic with synthetic backing. I don't need any kind of mat for my feet - I wear comfortable supportive mule type shoes for kitchen safety anyway.

I know this is not what you asked, but just, No to jumping on or off furniture. I cannot see covering your home with gym mats. A rug certainly as that is decorative, and comfortable for lying on, playing on. I know kids don’t “ listen “ as much as we’d like but where does it end? Gym mats around every bed, chair etc. I have had young family members allowed to do all this jumping on/ from nice furniture in their homes ( even encouraged, because it seemed strong and adventurous) , and then when they went for visits to other homes, did same thing there and could not be stopped, and also in restaurants, other places and certainly no cocoons of padding there. A jumping / gym corner maybe? Or outside? Just something to think about.

Andee, be careful that the vinyl mat is not moving ever so slightly as you roll on it. My husband damaged the hardwood floors in his office that way.

Thanks y'all. Graywings, my flooring is warranted against everything for my lifetime, but yet I was afraid I'd harm it. It will take some time to get use to having a floor that is so indestructable. LOL Thanks for calming my fears.
