Glenda! About the Bloody Maters....?

Once a month, a bunch of us in the neighborhood get together for an appetizer party. I thought the Bloody Maters sounded wonderful. The only problem is that one of the participants is a recovering alcoholic, so I'd like to do something else for her with the same tomatoes, spices, etc, but without the vodka. Do you or anyone else have any ideas?

Here's two I found, that sound interesting. I have not tried these myself. Have the Bloody Maters :o)
BTW, I did dip the cherry tomatoes, for the Bloody Tomatoes in boiling water, and peeled them. Very time consumming.

Marinated cherry tomato appetizers
2 pt Cherry tomatoes, preferably -mixed colors, stems removed -cut in half
2 Green onions, white part -only, coarsely chopped
1/4 c Finely chopped parsley
1 TB Finely chopped rosemary, or 2 ts Dried chopped rosemary
3 Garlic cloves, peeled, ends -removed, minced
1/3 c Extra-virgin olive oil
3 TB Balsamic vinegar
Salt, freshly ground black -pepper to taste

Directions
1. Mix tomatoes, green onions, parsley, rosemary, garlic, olive oil and vinegar in a shallow bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the bowl and let tomatoes marinate at room temperature at least 1 hour, but preferably 3 to 4 hours or overnight. Stir occasionally.
serve with toasted garlic baguettes

Ingredients
2 pints cherry tomatoes
1 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon ketchup
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon dried mustard
2 teaspoons salt
1 small onion finely chopped
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1/4 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions
Place tomatoes in wire basket and lower into boiling water for 1 minute.
Remove from boiling water and dip immediately into cold water.
Make marinade by combining all remaining ingredients in a non-reactive container.
Add tomatoes to the marinade then cover and refrigerate overnight.
Serve with toothpicks

This is always a winner and make such a pretty presentation.
I make this for gals luncheons. Have some champagne crackers or baguettes to serve with it.

Insalata Caprese Salad
1/2 pound fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced 1/4-inch thick
2 large ripe tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 cup fresh basil leaves
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons drained capers (optional) **I don't do the capers, but serve my marinated olives
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

In a circular design around the side of a serving plate, alternate fresh mozzarella slices on a large platter (or on individual plates if you are doing individual portions) with sliced tomatoes, overlapping for effect.

Tear fresh basil leaves and sprinkle liberally over the slices. Add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Sprinkle capers over the top.

Just before serving, drizzle on some excellent extra-virgin olive oil. NOTE: Insalata Caprese should never be allowed to sit in oil for any length of time and become soggy, and no vinegar of any kind goes on Insalata Caprese!

Makes 4 servings.

I have been happy with my Stupice. Only one survived but it has produced about 20 tomatoes with more on the way. The tomatoes are well shaped and tangy at first taste with a good finish. This has been a bad year for tomatoes with very cool and rainy weather so it's hard to know if my tomatoes tastes well compared to how they are at average. This is the first year I have grown from seed or have planted heirlooms so I can't compare. But they are better than the hybrids I have grown. I would rate Stupice just less than the first Noire de Crimee I had today. My favorite so far though is Sunsugar (hybrid but much better than other cherries previously grown.) I picked the first KBX today that is well over 18oz(the largest my scale can weigh) but I haven't tasted it yet. I have about 5 more types that haven't ripened yet so the next few weeks will be a treat.

Bloody Maters 1 pint cherry tomatoes 2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce (e.g. TabascoÂ) 1 cup pepper flavored vodka 2 tablespoons lemon pepper 2 tablespoons celery salt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIRECTIONS: Remove the stems from the tomatoes, and place them in a shallow bowl. Pour vodka over them so that they are covered. Stir in the hot pepper sauce. Cover, and refrigerate overnight. To serve, mix together the lemon pepper and celery salt in a small dish. Serve tomatoes floating in vodka. Provide toothpicks so that your guests may pick up the tomatoes and dip them in the seasoning before eating.

I don't have a recipe I usually use but I'm very brand loyal - Mr./Mrs. T's. I usually add lime, sometimes a squirt of hot sauce. If I don't add that I'll use V8 and dress it up with splashes of hot sauce, worstechire, spices, lime. I would only salt the rim if the tomato part was sort of bland, not salty. Usually tomato mixes can be very salty and you don't need the salted rim. My favorite home made (I like to try them at bars and restaurants everwhere but am usually disappointed) is at Cascarelli's in Albion MI. Lou, the owner, makes the best (ask for his special with all the xtras). He uses beef tea and garnishes heavily with green olives, dill pickele and cubes of jack cheese. The beef tea makes it very salty so I don't want a salted rim. My second favorite is at a restaurant in Fish Town, Leelanau Penninsula MI. The drink is called the Chubby Mary (since my name is Mary and I'm chubby I feel that this is my drink!:) Its not so much the tomato part but that they garnish with a smoked chub stuck in the drink which is pretty funny and really tasty - eaten separately! I heard several people that did the dog breeder and ride, and they loved the experience but I looked and looked and it and just didn't think it would be that much fun in comparison to the real glacier dog sled ride. I did get the salmon fishing excursion, but opted out of it. The Deadliest Catch cruise, has heaters over you, so you weren't cold, but to tell you the truth, on land it wasn't cold and by the time you go the weather should be perfect. I went in July last time. No heavy coat. Glacier Bay was cold when you were moving, and nite time on the open deck for the movies at 10:00 was cold. But lots were in the hot tub to watch the movie. Didn't take my swimsuit, gs did, but he didn't get in any of them. On the Deadliest Catch, they have coats for you to put on. Lairsville, it was damp, but not cold. Be sure and get on the deck and no on the upper level on the boat. I did layer at night to sit on the open deck. Used my raincoat lots, not due to the rain, but it was heavy enough to protect me from the wind, plus I had a jacket, light weight on underneath, plus long sleeve knit shirt. I changed clothes after dinner back to comfortable casual clothing. Balcony was great, and was an extended balcony. Only thing was that it was not covered, and the upper deck looked down onto you deck, cause it was extended. LOL, when gs was eating breakfast on the balcony when we were at Glacier Bay, people over us, were talking about gs enjoying his breakfast, and wished they had done that. The buffet for breakfast was great, but the buffet for lunch was disappointing. Dining experience evening was great. And the big surprise and biggie for gs was the Baked Alaska experience when lights were dimmed and the servers walked around with the lite baked alaska's and eveyone was twirling their napkins to the music. If you are on the GOlden Princess, you will find the International Cafe is ADDICTING! Their ham and cheese croissants are delicious, their mini desserts are fantastic, but the bestest of all was they kept freshly baked peanut butter cookies and chocolate chip cookies coming out all day long AND in the afternoon a server would walk around with a tray of small glasses of milk and freshly baked cookies. I dare not tell how many pb cookies I ate :o) I had rhubard ice cream instead of a slice of baked alaska

Thanks Glenda! I've saved each one, and will hopefully use one of them for the "appie' party.
