Care to take a stab at my layout?
Comments (3)I would put the fridge where you have the range (handy to the dining and easy for everyone to get to), and put the range on the other wall so you can have some work area around it! (I'd put it about 2' to the left of the pantry.) Right now you have none. I would consider the counter over the dishwasher part of the cleanup area, particularly difficult to access if someone is loading or unloading the dw, and of course, you can see that you have nothing on the other side. Some have no choice about having the range on the end of a run, but I think you do. Having it on the other wall would also keep the hot, busy range area a bit protected from traffic. Where it is in the above plan, people will be trying to squeeze past you to get to other parts of the kitchen...Aggravating and possibly dangerous....See Moreslide in range on island with venting...how to?
Comments (13)A few weeks back, I had the chance to visit the test kitchen at our local paper. They had the 14" telescoping Thermador downdraft vent paired with a induction cooktop on a peninsula. I asked how well it worked. He said better than the old one that didn't rise as tall however, he didn't think it would work as well as an overhead vent (which the space could not accommodate). This is one guy's opinion but since he's testing out multiple recipes all the time, I figured it carried some weight. We're replacing our 7" rising telescoping downdraft for our island cooktop (we can't move it to the wall either) and we're leaning towards installing a hood. We did consider the higher rising downdrafts, too. Like a few other posters, I've never noticed oil or stains on my ceiling even though we rarely used our old downdraft (as another stated, it pulls the flame). I even checked the pendant lights set 36" off the counter and about 4" either side of the cooktop. No grease, they don't look dirty and it's been a while since I washed them. I think it depends on how you cook and BTUs of the cooktop. Ours is 15 years old and definitely not pro-anything....See MoreIs there a downdraft blower system that will work?

Comments (9)I did a total remodel (no moving of walls) in my kitchen nearly 3 years ago - I was almost 73 at the time and everyone thought I was nuts. But I'd never had a new kitchen in my entire life, and the things on my "bucket list" that were physically and fiscally still possible (big problem with the physically), was pretty short and this was something I could do. I refinanced my house, taking money out do to it. Interest rates are dropping again - consider that option. Who cares if I have a 15 years fixed rate mortgage! It's a small one anyway. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself! I enjoy every single time I walk into my kitchen, seeing a new, wonderfully functional kitchen that is very pretty and inviting. And the drawers - oh the drawers! Why on earth did we not ALWAYS have drawers in lower cabinets? Probably because they were all designed by men (or women) who did not cook!) They are such a joy and make it easy to actually USE my kitchen. Before you spend any more money on your kitchen, go see a local cabinet shop that carries Shiloh - they are a mid-price cabinet company that makes nearly custom, in fact, they can make custom widths and depths. I got a LOT of ball-park cost info and much advise before I had to pay them $1000 for an actual drawing and a firm bid. If I didn't buy from them, then the plans and specs were mine; if I did (I did!), then that amount was credited toward my purchase....See Moreseedsilly
