Drain Holes Rusting in Kenmore Elite Top Load Washer
Comments (8)I had a Kenmore TL. Not sure if it was an elite, but pretty much all of the drums for the top loaders are made the same way. I had only had mine about two years when it started to rust around the little drain holes. Unless she was washing bags of coins there is really nothing she did wrong. Zippers, buttons, and snaps on clothing should not have done the damage. The Tide detergent would not have eaten away the glazing either. Good quality detergents, like Tide, have anti corrosion ingredients in them to prevent such issues. Washing machine drums are usually quality tested for that stuff. It is just a manufacturing error. The glaze wasn't put on efficiently so it has worn out faster. She can try to pull out the drum and put new glaze on. They sell it for bathtub repair. Otherwise, not much else can be done except replace the drum or buy a new washer. She, like I, just inadvertently got a lemon for lack of a better term. It happens, and because the machine is 5 years old I seriously doubt the manufacturer will replace it unless it is under an extended warranty that covers this type of problem. I would not recommend doing a lot of washing in it till it is fixed. She will start noticing rust spots on her clothing. I wish I could tell you something different, but it's better to tell you straight than have all of her clothes ruined with rust stains. HTH...See MoreBroken Kenmore Front Load Washer. Suggestions?
Comments (1)I know nothing about this type of problem. I do know I recently had sears come out to look at my older style kenmore front loader. My washer was not repairable but I did receive a $65 decline of service coupon. This coupon was stackable with all other discounts at sears. The sales person at sears was skeptical as to if the coupon would work but it did....See MoreKenmore Front Load Washer trying to bring down my house
Comments (1)Hello--I have had the same problems with HE2 washer made in 2004 -- with a dryer stacked on top of it, it has traveled just a little, not across the laundry room. But the vibrations have been very violent and scary so I got a repair person in to take a look, and then spoke with additional repair people to be sure I was hearing the right answer. Repair people told me the bearing (which holds the basket) is wearing out and the cost to repair this is more than a whole new washing machine. This is a problem with most front loaders--the vibrations that get so much water out also wear out the parts. I have just ordered a unitized laundry center with washer and dryer--I much prefer top load with agitator to the front loaders anyway. And I have to replace the dryer because the stacked units will only go with each other and I can't stack the dryer safely on another washer. FYI, repair people tell me that 8-10 years is unfortunately the expected life span of a front load washing machine, which seems awfully short given the cost of these. If you can keep your dryer, you are lucky; mine is working fine but as noted I can't keep it since no room to put the machines side by side....See MoreKenmore HE3t Front loading washer & dryer - advice please
Comments (5)Blackbelt consumer: Sorry to hear of your bad encounter with Sears. You know, when I first got those machines home and tried them on, I already felt that something wasn't "kosher." I guess we bought in to the sales talk too quickly. We never learned our lesson dealing with Sears. We got a Kenmore dishwasher. It was a smaller capacity one, but cost more. We got it because of space limitation. Before the year was up, it already had problem--the water spinner broke--it melted away! And of course the warranty period was over too. So, I was thinking to myself how could Sears sell such a shoddy product! Anyway, Sears will be history for me too. spark823: Thanks for the heads up on LG. Interesting thing is that a few people in this forum seem to have positive things to say of it, but of course until the problem becomes a problem, it's always ok. In all fairness, all things will have problems some day, but if the problems become evident too soon, then the product is no better than the top loaders. They seem to last for years. Only difference is its energy saving feature, but I wonder how much savings is worth looking into, considering all inconveniences one has to go through. By the way, I do use the new detergent that is made for front loaders. laudrytech: The only thing with our set is that we have installed a new vent, so there's no kink or clog as far as we can tell. Also, the machine being so new, there isn't any residue around the door. That said, I will look out for the helpful things you suggested for future trouble shooting though. Guys, I have learned something here and want to thank each one of you for taking the time to respond. Meanwhile, I've been thinking of reverting back to good old days--with the top loaders. Any models to recommend? Stackable ones are preferred. Thanks so much once again and have a good evening....See Moreitguy08
