Need Opinion on Cabinet Color Ideas...Pics Included

Hello All!!! I have been lurking here for a while as we are building our first home and I just love seeing all the beautiful ideas everyone has. Anyhow, here is what I need help with...

The pics of the kitchen below are from the Model Home (of the house that we are having built). Anyhow, while I think this is beautiful, I had in mind white painted cabinets and cabinets to the ceiling. Our style is more Urban and this kitchen screams traditional to me. We don't like contemporary or modern...more a Pottery Barn type look.

I am looking for any suggestions on how we can give this more of an updated look? What would you change? What would you keep?

Before my kitchen remodel, I thought I was going to go for natural cherry. Then I started leaning towards white painted cabinets and it took me so long before I realized something. I almost prefer a white kitchen when it is a little more closed off from the other rooms. That being said, my kitchen is now white and in a semi open space (but small space)
What I am getting at is that the picture of the model shows wood kitchen connected to a room with a slightly rustic looking livingroom space. I think it would take some planning to make it all work together, such as warm white cabinets, mixed with a wood island,etc... And maybe the flooring the same in both rooms.
I say go with what you like, just make it flow with the adjoining room.
Now, let the experts on this forum give opinion, because they see much more than I do when they look at kitchens!

postum, thank you for the link for the curtains. I also like the fuller and higher panels I believe. I'm glad you like how my room is coming together. I'll get a pic of the artwork above the fireplace and post it for you. mclarke, privacy isn't a major factor there, only sun. jgabm, what beautiful framework around your window! Thanks for posting it. palimpsest, I really like the first room I posted, but the WTs hung below the arches seems to give it more of a chopped up look to me. I personally think I like the look of the higher hung panels for my space.

Thanks so much for the feedback! It seems there are two schools of thought: keep it simple b/c there's already a lot going on vs. add extra table etc. I'm still waffling about the shelf, myself! :-) I like the idea of adding a mirror because it will probably help to brighten the space. Also, I could easily check how I look (or whatever) before heading out instead of running down to the bathroom (nearest mirror). Re: the tape--> It's the blue tape from when they textured and painted the wall. I would take it off except we need to re-texture part of it again. teacats--> which wall are you referring to--the wall closest to the door or the wall more recessed from the front door (I think the first wall I see is the recessed wall)? I COMPLETELY agree about the clock. I've never found anything I like so I just keep the old clock. Also, a bigger clock would be easier to read :-) mjlb--> you're right about all the moulding etc; I'm looking for a cheap fix though, so painting out the doors is probably what I'll do for now. We do have to replace the closet door b/c it has a hole in it so that will be the time for the moulding. All our old interior door mouldings match the closet but whoever put in the new front and garage doors changed it. evaperconti--> I like your idea about the console table w/bench underneath and a chair by the door. I've been scanning Craigslist but, so far, nothing. Plant won't work, unfortunately, but I could try for some other vertical element. So many great ideas!!! You guys have given me a lot to think about and helped me to see the entry a little differently. Thanks so much :-)

Just to throw you one more curve: I've had narual hardwood floor sin my kitchen for 20+ years with dogs and kids, who used to race their tricycles and chase the dogs around the house. The floors are still in pretty good shape although may need some refinishing at one point. We used what was called at the time "Pacific Strong", similar to today's Bona Commercial. Only drawback (advantage) is that one can't see the dirt on the floor.

Georgia, we ended up doing Latte throughout. I love it. They are finishing up the painting today but I'll post pics tomorrow after the chair rail is done. We also did red (SW Bolero) in the art niche and beneath the chair rail in the DR. We left the kitchen color the same since it goes with the Latte and is a bit lighter. I plan to get some very colorful window treatments and window seat cushions and pillows to make the kitchen nook pop more, rather than doing the kitchen in a different color. RG at 50% was pretty light. It was very similar to the Blonde, but with a slightly different tone to it. It also looked lighter than Blonde to me. I hear you about repainting. I'm kicking myself for paying another $200 to get the LR repainted just a week later LOL. But I would rather do that than hate my LR, KWIM? Good luck!

Change the doorfronts first, to something simpler--shaker or slab fronts.

Lose the cabinet above the rangehood and install a sainless chimney-style hood.

Lose the beadboard on the end of the island.

Choose more contemporary pendants for over the island.

Choose something more urban for the backsplash--glass tile, back-painted glass, metal or metal tile, even a straight-up glossy subway would look less traditional than the tumbled travertine look.

As far as color, I think you can do something more urban in a variety of cabinet finishes. It depends on what will go well with adjacent space.

I agree w/ cawaps. Although when I see it it all just feels too dark - including the cabinets. Maybe you don't need to lighten the cabinets necessarily (maybe w/ these other suggestions by cawaps, you wouldn't have to) but the room just feels dark and dated. :( I hate saying that! And mind you, I admit I'm not really one to give advice (please don't look up my kitchen pictures!!!). I also agree that the cabinets would be nicer going all the way to the ceiling. I agree that cream or white would be more inviting but that may be just me (and you)! ;)

wow, what a large kitchen! ditto what cawaps said. probably shaker is more PB than slab. even if you didn't take the cabs to the ceiling, it would look more urban if you topped them at all the same level.
