Hello, I see you need a heat loss and gain for your new addition to your new home. a long with duct work wich is done with a duct-u-later. all can be done. which is what I do. You need somewhat of blueprints for the house and the factors that are going into the home as far as windows ad insulation.

Its not an addition but a renovation of the exiting floor. There will be a couple of bumpouts for windowseat etc. I also need to know if the current ductwork is adequate and if current duct locations are appropriate or need to be moved. Need to take all of this into consideration and not sure how to go about this.

well first the heat gain and loss has to be done, so you know what size unit you need, after that the ducts has to be looked at. This is not a homeowner option although you can go to hvac-talk and buy a one time use program to get the heat loss and gain. When are you going to start this project.

This is a tough one. Unless you can get a personal recommendation I would review the contractors who sign up with on-line referral programs. The 2 I'm aware of are Angie's List and Service Magic. I've always used the latter as its a free service for the homeowner. So far I've used contractors for 3 different projects based on contacts supplied by SM. I read the reviews from other users and got quotes from 3 or 4 of the companies I felt most comfortable with. Always check BBB too. I just used a local HVAC company to install a high end Bryant system and couldn't have been happier with the level of service. The fact that they were $2500 less than the 2nd closest quote for the same equipment made it even sweeter. Good luck.

I think that I may take a slightly different approach. I have discovered that NJ has an Enegry Star program running. You pay a small fee and they have a BSI certified contractor come and inspect the home for air leaks, missing insulation, etc. They use IR camera's and do a blower door test. For one they will fix air leaks up to $1000 for free. The bigger thing is if your house is drafty, have an old furnace , AC etc and they can project that the improvements will result in a 25%+ reduction in heating costs, then there is a 50% rebate up to a total cost of $10,000. Thus $20,000 in improvements costs $10,000. On top of that you can do an interest free load for the $10,000 for up to 10 years. I have been researching contractors that are certified but aren't HVAC companies to try and elicit a more honest approach. Most also offr duct testing & sealing and are heating and cooling experts as well so they should be able to do manual J caculations based on the improvements and air seal they recommend. I think this is an important first step since this will affect the heating system I currently have.
