Maybe I'm confused, but if they're willing to do an out-of-warranty repair/fix for a part they later changed due to to problems, I'd say that's GOOD service, not bad, and something I agree companies SHOULD do, but many do not. (Repair known faulty parts, even on out of warranty appliances.) Producing a receipt is a common warranty requirement. Often warranty does not transfer to secondary purchasers, so proving you're the original buyer is a standard, and I'd say, reasonable request. If, for whatever reason, you no longer have such proof of purchase it's possible you'll get them to waive the requirement by giving them more information or explaining the situation again to another rep, calmly and politely. And I know it doesn't help you now, but I've learned (the hard way) to make copies of my purchase receipts for major purchases and store them, along with the product's original instruction manual, in a specific locale for easy potential future access. By the way, we have an LG steam washer and dryer and, knock wood, have so far not needed service. We've been very happy with the quality.

Ah, been wondering when the CR's rating of Miele would be mentioned. I have subscribed to CR for over 30 years. It has its place and value. Unfortunately, they have their opinion that a washing machine has to have large capacity. If you don't, then you get down rated. Also, I suspect some unknown matrix of cost/performance/function to make it really hard to figure their rating system. I suspect even the IEC 4 CF W48xx would get dinged, somehow. So this is not the first time, one might have to ignore CR numeric rating, if you put a value on some aspect outside the norm ( or if I dare say, know more or value your ability to rate your own values). For example, at one time they took the position that all sports/luxury cars were unnecessary and overpriced. Therefore, they did even bother to rate them. Now they do- even the Corvette and even higher priced cars. Did not stop me from buying an unrated Audi or BMW? Same for digital cameras. Go look at my Nikon D200 in this month's CR issue. It has more "red dots", got the highest image quality (is that important for a camera?), yet CR rates it mid-pack. I suspect the cost. Who knows, who cares, is the point? If you know a lot about digital cameras and have other sources- like perhaps a good forums review sites - like the one Amazon just bought.

I don't know if this will help but here is what my LG does.I have LG TROMM 2496. Each selection w/ the knob for example - cotton/normal or bulky/large has different settings build in. The water temp is chosen, spin speed selected and in my case water amount is added automaticaly.It kind of works as a guide I guess to let people know what to wash on what cycle. However I can change the temperature or speed or level of dirtyness and add extra water too on any cycle. So if you wash comforter it just makes sense to use heavy/ bulky button which gives you lower spin than normaly because wet comforter is really heavy and selecting this option, you don't have to guess what to do. Or you can use normal load setting but lower the spin speed down-if possible. Some of my option buttons also have double function. It means if I push it once, it will do whatever the button should do or if I hold it in for 3 seconds it will activate child lock or whatever is written on the bottom of the button. I can even program my own cycle in. From my own experience w/ comforters. I wash them on reg. cycle,but in hot water, low to med spin w extra rinse and water plus only in the rinse. I found out if I wash towels mixed w/ other laundry, they come out rinsed perfect compare to just wash huge load of towels alone. They take lots of exra water to rinse them out properly. It takes couple of loads to find out what cycle or setting is best for your specific load. It isn't science and machine will not explode so don't worry to try few different options. If the comforter fits in, it will get washed, it might just take exra rinse or one more wash before you know what to do. Hope this isn't too confusing.
