I can remember living in CT when we were first married & all the laundry would be like yours when I would bring them in. It was funny to see jeans stand up by themself because they were frozen. Those were the good old days before the dryer.

When I had an office in downtown we passed a trailer everyday, she had clothes on a line every single day. Often it was the same laundry for several days, winter or summer, rain or shine. I would have hated to have to wear any of the items, the line was right along the side of a very, very busy road. The laundry had to be coated with road dirt.

Rosepedal, Don't you just love living in a "temperate" climate? Seasonal swings better than 100 degrees- Temperate. Right. LOL. My GH is so well insulated and so much air moves with the big ceiling fans, I can usually keep it below 80 even on the hottest days and the 60% aluminet shade cloth certainly helps, but last August, when the temps hit near 100, I was getting a bit nervous and thought about the old fashoned whitewash I can't use on my polycarb, when I remembered what I'd seen once in so. Italy: white cloths being used for shade over kitchen gardens. So I went scrounging at the local thrift shop and came home with a half dozen king sized, white flat sheets that I sewed together to make a single piece large enough to cover my 12 x 16; roof and down the sides a bit, particularly on the end facing SW. I installed grommets on the edges and used thin bungees to hold it down, but left it pretty loose, so the the roof vents could open under it. It helped a lot and the temp. dropped several degrees. Then, eager to cool it down more, I sprayed it with cold water it and that really made a difference, although the sheeting dried pretty quickly. I left that lightweight sheeting up for several weeks, wetting it several times a day in the hottest part of the afternoon until the worst of blistering heat spell passed and am glad to report that none of my fish in any of the tanks in the GH were par-boiled. Anyway, it was a pretty cheap solution. I think I spent less than $10.00 on all those sheets. Sort of a pity on several of them though- 800 count cotton percale deserves better than to be tossed over a GH, but it worked.

Here's the recipe I learned from visiting the pizza making forum: Larsâ Pizza Ingredients 2 to 2-1/8 cups water 2 tsp malt powder (or 1 tsp sugar) 2 tbsp VWG (vital wheat gluten flour)* 1 cup semolina flour 1-1/2 tsp IDY (instant dry yeast)* 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 3-1/2 cups bread flour** 1 tbsp salt Directions Pour 2 cups water into Kitchenaid mixing bowl, and add malt powder, VWG, and semolina flour. If you do not have VWG, it can be replaced with regular flour. Whisk together, and then add the IDY and olive oil. Add two cups of bread flour, and put the bowl on the mixer with the dough hook, and mix until blended. Then add the rest of the flour, one cup at a time, along with the salt. If the dough is too stiff, add the rest of the water. You may have to adjust the amount of bread flour to get a dough that is smooth and comes away from the bowl. The dough will be slightly sticky when finished. Complete the kneading by hand for a few turns, and place the dough in a bowl greased with a bit of olive oil, and allow to rise at room temperature for 1-1/2 hours. Divide the dough into thirds, and place in oiled plastic bags in the fridge overnight. Remove dough from fridge and allow it to rest at room temperature for one hour before handling. Stretch the dough into a 12-13â circle, add toppings, and bake on a pizza stone or pizza screen at 500ð for 8-10 minutes, or until done. If your oven will reach a higher temperature, that would be preferable and will reduce baking time. If your oven will only reach 400ð, you may want to melt a layer of cheese on the crust before adding other toppings. *Note: both VWG and IDY should be stored in the refrigerator, and the yeast can be frozen to make it last longer. **Can substitute 1/2 cup potato flour for part of the bread flour. Flour to water ratio should be 2.3/1, approximately, but can go as high as 2.8/1 or as low as 2/1. Lars I made pizza dough in Mexico City once, and the dough rose all over the place before I knew it, due to the altitude (over 7400 feet). I'm frozen and I can't get myself going...

I sewed some puckers in the back of a quilt I did last year. I'm generally a perfectionist, but I'm also very impatient & HATE "the ripper". As long as the pleat wasn't on the front or huge, I let it go. It was my first largish size quilt I quilted all by machine with a free motion foot (hexagons, triangles). I consider it my learning quilt since I learned a few things NOT to do, but it's still beautiful on both sides...the back is batik & disguises the puckers. I'm impatient & sewed too quick at times & therefore pushed (maybe shoved?) the quilt thru the machine. I also wasn't patient enough to flatten & adjust the quilt layers each & everytime I had to turn it, so with each & every turn, there's pucker potential. This will also happen if you don't pin or baste good enough. Again...I didn't baste as good as I should have. Ran out of pins. I also like the applique idea. But for me, unless it's a really large pleat or hole, that just adds more time to the project when I could be just done with this one & starting another one. ;) My scrapbooking motto is: "If it doesn't look right...glitter it". Glitter will fix just about any flaw or add some spice to a scrapbook page. I haven't quite figured out how to tactfully add glitter to my quilts. :)

AJ, Her Mother won't let her wear too many of the things I make her to school. Where we live red clay is abundant and on the play ground she gets red clay on her clothes. Since it's finally getting cold here she's letting her wear a few things. She wore the b'day outfit to Wal-Mart with me Sat and several people complimented her and she very quietly said "thank you". I don't know if she'll want to copy the dresses or hire mother and me. She's already doing me like I did mother, I'd volunteer her for anything because I thought she could make anything. Madison has me doing things for others and promises these services too. Susan

Love sleeping cold, under tons of blankets.

Once I froze my goldfish. Yes, I did! In my bedroom as a teenager.

Have also retrieved frozen sheets, cause I love the fresh air dried sheets. Not dried, but I had the fresh air smell :o)

Going to the old family country home, years ago, as a youth, bricks were warmed by the fireplace, placed at the end of the bed, wrapped, and kept our feet warm for a while.

So Jasdip, did you enjoy hopping into a fresh pair of frozen bloomers? Rumor has it, or should I say rumour has it that frozen laundry kills underwear elastic. Not sure where I heard it, but...

Susanjf, we had a screened porch at our previous house, we went did the plastic for a few years then we bit the bullet and invested in bought plexiglass. It was an expensive initial investment but in the longrun it paid for itself. Hubby designed a toggle system to hang it each year so if worked out to save the lumber as well.

Hahah Cynic. Hey thanks for changing rumor to the Correct Way of spelling rumour in your note! Hahahahahaaaa

Ah, nothing like the smell of thawing clothes, wrecked elastic or not!

I think that it's the heat that wrecks the elastic - some people store their rubber bands in the fridge.

It sure was nice to have warm weather for so long - I hung a wash out to dry a few days ago.

Now ... if I can just arrange to stretch out the need for another wash ...

... till about March!

One can lay the underwear out in sequence, which was worn first. Then ... lay an unused white church envelope (for shame!) on them after that set's been worn twice ...

... and a brown envelope from the other church on them after the third wearing ...

... and a white paper with a "1" on it, after the fourth wearing ... and a brown envelope with a "1" on it after the fifth ....

When you're going to be at home all day, without visitors ... who needs a change? Especially when they've had almost a week to air out, in the meantime: and who sweats much, in winter (especially if one keeps one's house abut 65 degrrees)?

Haven't you heard - washing's hard on clothes?

Fly in the ointment: the church that had brown (recycled) envelopes last year ... is using white ones, this year! Will have to check whether I have some extra brownies on hand ... as they do tend to get lost.

My friend just gave me it must be at least 50 pairs of socks - that they were throwing out at the church-operated clothing store, cause they couldn't give them away ...

... so I figure that I'll be O.K. for socks till spring (maybe re-wearing just once, if spring's late).

Now that the gardening's over ... and it's snowy and too cold out to do much in the barn ... I'll just have to get busy and sew some of those (garter-belts) for the (lower-level) underwear! The original one's getting rather old and tired, even taking into account the upgrading (i.e. shortening), last fall.

Hope you all have a lovely New Year ...

... that brings the fulfillment of some of your dreams ...

... and the envisioning of some worthwhile new ones.
