Lumber liquidator butcher block counter top fiasco

Just went to pick up my lumber liquidator 12 foot maple butcher block countertops (bbc) ($360) plus tax, and every joint had a 1/16th to 1/8th gap that was filled with wood filler. Ugliest countertops I have ever seen. When I got my refund they charged me a $72 "restocking fee". I have seen numerouse bbc and these were by far the worst. Even the super cheap Ikea bbc are much nicer than this. There was also a lot of very dark grey and red strips in the bbc that was probably oak. I realize they will not be perfect at this price, but they should at least be nicer than ikea's bbc. Has anyone else had this experience?

Comments (1)Giggling as I type since I just wrote a response to you about Internet orders. We had purchased the present home having hickory countertops , granite on the sides of the Viking stove and granite as the back splash and a stain steel back splash in the rear of the gas range. The previous home owners had an under mount double sink along the L counter top and a bar sink on the wood island. Their kitchen designer had left wood trim between the double sink. Big Mistake! Huge Mistake! This wood strip was rotted . The island sink also had severe water damage near the faucet. I contacted local wood craftsman to see if I could just replace the hickory L shaped counter . I had to at first identify my wood species since my intention was to replace only one section of wood. The kitchen has / had three areas of wood so I had to match it. I sent photos to the local forestry college and two wood kitchen designers. I have reclaimed hickory . The cost from a Westchester dealer was eight grand . I did not even factor in travel time and distance since I live in eastern Ct. A New Jersey based wood dealer quoted me 15 grand to repair the L shaped wood counter. My hopes on the local wood craftsman was squashed when he emailed me saying he had no interest in reconstructing a partial counter. I love wood. I love when a kitchen has character so the two colored cabinets and the mixed counter tops appeal to me. I have owned seven homes so renovations have become ......... easy. Oh I curse, I cry, I yell but I know to mull things over and wait until I smile. When I know it will work I am at peace . I love reading the kitchen board cause it helps me process my renovation whether it is the bathroom, kitchen or even the chicken coop. Yes, the chicken coop. I approach all the home issues as function, design and cost. If the cost is too much I retweak the function or design . If I find that the cost is still too high I wait. Since water is wood's worst neighbor have you considered a soapstone sink with a dish extension. I do not know the technical terms but I imagine you extending the area around the soapstone sink so water puddles will be on the stone. I have seen the stainless steel sinks also with the sink having a extension of SS around the sink. I can not add links showing my design suggestions since I am IT stumped. If you go in with the mindset " oh I will always wipe water off the wood" you will go bonkers when your guests help in the kitchen. You need to waterproof the wood. Make sure it is a hard durable wood. I love my hickory. I just could not afford the repair bill so soapstone was installed . I am frozen from walking the dogs . Comments (49)They have stock sizing. We used the 73" X 39" for our separate peninsula and had a woodworker to the sink cut-out and routing. We also used the Lagan (now discontinued) for the seat of our banquette, which DH cut and joined together himself; the joint is covered by a cushion. IIRC, Lumber Liquidators also sells BB countertops in longer lengths. Or did you mean deeper, as in from front to back? You may have to go more custom route if you have more depth. BTW, we have plenty of cut BB scraps, and none of them look like EmikoF2's. That definitely looks like a "bad" batch. Comments (21)Thanks everyone for the nice compliments. I got so many good tips from this forum. The biggest tip I got here was to use mostly drawers in the bottom. I was worried at first but my gosh, it is fantastic! I can't believe everyone that does a new kitchen doesn't do this. Everything is so accessible and you actually have more storage. In fact, I have so much storage I still have drawers that don't have anything in them yet. And this isn't a huge kitchen, I think it is 11' x 12' or so. Lynn, I answered you question about the hard wood on the post in the decorating forum where I posted pics of the rest of my house. The floors are by Shaw, 5" plank engineered, satin finish. The color change hasn't been dramatic, just gives them a richer color. Easy to care for so far. Thanks for the thought on sealing after oiling. Comments (16)John Boos - I got a 27" deep piece of blended maple, 5 feet long and I think it cost about $200. We have ikea cabinets installed against the wall and its insane how much larger it feels than a 25" top. The countertop rule of thumb is the counter should overhang all sides of the cabinet. You should add a minimum of 3" to the depth and 3" to the width. If you're adding wainscot or some other form of panels on the back and sides, those would add a little bit more. 27" would be about as small as I would go in depth - but you could also choose to go wider. I've seen some pretty cute tops that overhang more and have a bowl cut out for scraping cut veg into a bowl. Just watch out that you can reach the entire inside of your drawers with the overhang that you've chosen. For length, you'd need the length to be 4 feet and you'd cut it to the exact size. Sand the cut edge to match the manufactured edge. Again, you can go a little longer. For instance have an overhang of 4 inches on both sides and mount hanging rails.
