best ways to insulate walls of 1969 built home

We've just started a remodel of a newly purchased ranch style home built in 1969. Apparently this was preinsulation, because our contractor pulled the paneling off two exterior walls and found a few foam blocks of insulation and bare studs. I'm not sure if this foam disintegrated over time or if insulation just wasn't ever put in.

Anyway, we can easily insulate the exposed walls, but what are our choices for the other walls? Can insulation be blown in through holes in the drywall?

The odd thing is that when we were looking at the house before purchasing it on some really hot days (at least for Seattle, anyway), the house was nice and cool with all the windows closed.

I saw a web article about insulating old houses and the author maintained that it was unnecessary as long as the attic was insulated, because heat rises. Does this sound accurate?
