Cutting and piecing together butcher block counter--pics?

Let me preface this by stating that I have no woodworking skills whatsoever, so this may be an idiotic question! We are building a house, and our island is 60"x45". I'd like the counter top to be butcher block but am having a hard time finding one large piece that can be cut to our exact size. Instead, it looks like we may have to buy one that's 120"x25", cut it in half, and piece the two together. But won't there be a large, noticeable seam right smack in the middle? What has been your experience with this? If you've done this and have pics handy, I'd love to see them. Thanks!

To get these seams right, the piece must be run through a surfacing machine after glue-up. Otherwise it's a crapshoot whether or not it's flat and invisibly joined. If I were doing this job for paying customers, I would make an appointment for a session on the thickness sander at the local mill.
There's good reason why wood counter top manufacturers charge an arm and a leg for the oversize work.

You might try looking for a modular sink, one where the sink unit replaces a section of counter, so the counter just comes up to it on each side, there is no cut out. They don't seem very common here in the states, but the are out there. The link for the murano collection is actually part of a diy granite system, but it seems that it would work for wood as well and the price seems quite reasonable; a couple of hundred dollars. I've not seen it in person, so I don't know about the quality. Some of the major sink players make them as well, more money I'm sure. Blanco makes the Platinum module drop in series; Wave Plus Module and Supreme Module. Kindred makes the KCWD6016R-9 Double Bowl Countertop Kitchen Sink With Drainboard. Elkay makes a D6629-4 Gourmet Lustertone Self-Rim Double Bowl-Double Drainboard Kitchen Sink. I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I found when looking a while ago. Yelena, look for a trim carpenter in your area (I'm up in Maine, so can't help you much). Get some references from friends, etc? It's not a difficult job, it'll take a jigsaw. At least that's what we used when we did it a while back. Just make sure to mark your radius really clearly and cut a little proud of the line so you have lots of room to sand.

My first choice would be biskit,secound dowel and third spline. Kreg pocket hole should be fine.

Amy, use a magnet to make sure no metal is inside just to make sure and you can cut it if there is no metal. Most cutting boards you find in-home use, held together with food-safe glue. The heavy-duty butcher blocks you see inside meat markets, or butcher shops, on which they use mallets to pound meat or a cleaver to chop through bone, ribs, etc these butcher blocks are reinforced and held together with metal rods that run through them. But these butcher blocks are heavy, and usualy anywhere from 8-18" thick.

They have your size - look under pricing. I called and they will custom do any size you want. We have a large island and they will do any size. They are super affordable at around $28 sq foot shipped and comes with any edge for only $35 extra!!

John Boos also has a variety of sizes and species for butcher block. I almost ordered from them but had my 4x6x1.75" island top made locally.

I found John Boos to be a disappointment -- their local distributor took my info and didn't call back. I ended up finding a vendor on ebay to make me a custom walnut counter at a great price (less than $250 incl. shipping for a 31x25 counter and backsplash). They've sent me pictures, and they're beautiful, but the counter itself is on its way and I look forward to seeing it (touching it!) in person. I don't think they do sizes larger than 4 feet, but I'm happy to share their info once I get the item and can verify the quality in person.

So there's lots of options out there.

I'll vouch for Hardwoodlumber.com, I have had multiple dealing with them, and they are fine people with a fine product who will bend over backwards to help you.
If you're in the east, shipping won't kill you as it would to go from them to, say, cali.
