Nate's favorite hotel (I've stayed there)

On Oprah today, Nate talked about his favorite hotel in the U.S. Â the SoHo Grand, in NYC. I stayed there once.......but not in the $5,000-a-night penthouse suite.

I can see why he likes it. It attracts a young, rich, trendy crowd. I thought it was okay, but I'm neither young nor rich. And I'm especially not trendy. :-)

What's your favorite hotel in the U.S.?

Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii

Great rates, free phone calls to the mainland, and location, location, location! It's right in the center of all the action in Waikiki!

1. Venetian, Las Vegas...all suites
2. Bellagio, Las Vegas...exquisite
3. Desert Springs Marriott...Palm Desert...beautiful

However, when we travel, we mostly stay in Choice Hotels.

When we were kids, my parents took us to Florida every year for vacation... we drove down and camped near the Gulf around the Clearwater area. Anyway, at night the trees would come alive with tiny little lizards and critters, out feeding. Even during the day, there were certain types of tiny geckos that would only move when we'd hold still for a little while. If we moved, they'd freeze, and only go about their business when they thought it was safe again. Very interesting little creatures! I worked for a small garden center on and off for several years during the late 80's and early 90's, and I had the most fun! My favorite part was helping the customers choose the right type of perennials for their gardens, or helping them pick annuals for large container arrangements! Another thing I enjoyed was choosing seed and perennials for the following year! It was one of the best jobs I've ever had! In the garden, I use a systemic in granule form. It's made by Bayer, and is formulated for roses and ornamentals. It's about the only thing that gets of rid of aphids on my roses and shrubs. I would ask my local county farm bureau if the Narcissus Bulb Fly is even a threat in your area before reaching for an insecticide. Certain areas of the country are probably not plagued by this pest.

yes you can swim w/ the dolphins at Discovery Cove, a division of seaworld. i don't know what it costs for out of state residents but FL residents are discounted to $200 a person on many days of the yr. we were suppossed to do that last nov but had to cancel our date :-( dh had an internship interview. i still very much want to go there, they have alot of other things to do also. i think there are places in south FL and the keyes that also have dolphin swins. if that is out you might think about a kayaking tour in the indian river lagoon by cape canaveral, they are fairly cheap. there are often wild dolphins swimming there and usually manatees too. my dh does A Day Away tours sometimes and has seen both swimming in the warmer months. BTW if alex is still looking at colleges we have the 3rd largest in the country here in orlando, University of Central FL ;-))) my dh is graduating this aug w/ his BS in mechanical engineering w/ 2 semesters left to finish his MS. if you are interested in touring let me know, my dh can take you around. it's about 45 min. northeast of disney. ~ liz Here is a link that might be useful: a day away kayaking

Haha Misty. I had a similar experience not too long ago. We planned a weekend in Ithaca, NY.. a much needed getaway. Unfortunately it was parents' weekend at Cornell and the hotels and inns were full. The only room we could find was in the turret of a seemingly very nicely appointed inn. Oh boy was our impression wrong. We walk into the room-- connected to the rest of the inn by an uncovered bridge to the turret-- there in front of us was a round bed with mirrors on the ceiling.. and LAWN FURNITURE stuffed into the very small space between the bed and the round walls. The bed was pretty much the whole room. There was a lovely jacuzzi tub with beautiful views but it was set immediately above the bed-- so that one (or two) could presumably roll out of the tub into the bed. YUCK. I wondered how or if they kept the mattress clean. (Though I have a vague recollection that it may have been a waterbed hahah) We got a good laugh out of the whole experience but man, it was so not my idea of sexy or romantic... and we actually paid MORE for that room. That said, it is usually the small inns that I want to steal ideas from.. not the hotels.

I don’t give gift bags for my guests, although many times I’ll buy them something local that they’re admiring while they’re here. I always put a vase of fresh, seasonal flowers in our guest room, as well as a few magazines, and a recent dining-and-regional attractions guide for the area. I also keep a number of books on New Mexico and our local area for anyone interested, on the book case in there. On the nightstand, I keep a box of Kleenex, a small bottle of non-perfume-y hand cream, and small open container that holds a pen, pencil, small thin flashlight, emery board, etc. It’s a nice-sized nightstand, as I always myself appreciate a nice area next to the bed for my water, book, reading glasses, etc. Because we have very low humidity here in New Mexico, I also add a carafe of water and drinking glass or bottled water. In our guest bathroom I keep a nice-sized basket of things our guests might need during their stay with us: small bottles of Tylenol, Tums, etc. Band-Aids, sunscreen, (new, sealed) Chapsticks, small toothpastes and toothbrushes. Several shampoo, conditioner, and bar soap samples in case they don’t care for the shampoo and bottle of liquid soap that I keep in the shower, or haven’t brought their own. I always remind my guests before they come that I have a (very nice) hairdryer and an always-washed-and-ready, generic terry robe in the guest room closet, if needed. I’m happy and surprised how many of our guests save packing space in their suitcases, and use the robe and hairdryer. We travel frequently, and what I DON’T like in guest rooms, besides knick-knack clutter, is not having a nightstand on both sides of the bed for DH and myself. And, not having decent lamps on the nightstands to read by. Also, a full-length mirror in the guest room is great. I’ve hung one on the wall behind the door in my guest room. Not enough space and/or hangers for our clothes is another irritant although I’d never, as a guest, complain to our family or friends about it. So, that's what our guests get when they come for a visit, but no gift bag.

My favorite place would have to be a tent on the shore of Cliff Lake in the Bighorns of Wyoming. Lousy beds, non existent room service, the bathrooms leave a lot to be desired, but, as czech chick says it's all about location, location, location.

You can just make out the tent on the left side of the shore.

And one other thing; the water is of superb quality.

just saw the show and while the soho grand is not my style i love the view which is very big in my book for expensive hotels. i can be a hotel snob because i am a service fanatic and like to splurge on vacations. when i am on vacations i am out of my regular routine which only adds to my stresses so i make sure to have a wonderful hotel to go back to that alleviates stress.

my fav place is the peninsula in chicago and even thou i have a place still in chicago i stay atleast a couple nights of each visit at the penn. it's definitely a treat, they have promotions for holidays and luxury rooms come down to $600 or so. there is NOTHING like shopping all day downtown, running over to the hotel (on Michigan Ave) to get ready for dinner and a theatre show or opera and going back late into the night and soaking in a garden tub w/ a view over the beautiful city all lite up. i love love love it! as much as i hate cold weather i will leave warm orlando just to spend a few days in chicago there lol. there are only 3 in this country and the chicago one is fairly new and very beautiful... the breakers in palm beach is also a very nice hotel but i don't get that giddy excited feeling about going there like i do for the penn.~ liz

We don't travel that often but I have a few favorites. In New York City - The Essex House with a view of Central Park, especially in the winter when you can watch the ice skaters. The Sunday Brunch is wonderful.

We've stayed at the Fontainebleau in old Quebec several times.

My favorite hotel is the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa. We've stayed there many times, but never for more than 8 nights straight. (I'd love to spend a month at a time, at least!) Hubs has to drag me out of there each time...

The first few times we always had a "partial ocean view" room and then we stayed in a full-on ocean view room. We both agreed that we prefer the "partial ocean view" rooms because you get a great view of the ocean, but you also get a great view of their fabulous lagoon. So, except for the one time, we've always booked partial ocean view rooms/suites.

Oh, no! I realized this morning that I did not stay at the SoHo Grand. It was the 60 Thompson, also in SoHo. I swear, the pictures on Oprah's show looked just like it! Well, I was close. LOL

Kahala in Hawaii/Oahu. Out of the Waikiki congestion, private, elegant, wonderful.

Several favorites are Chateau Frontenac, Chateau Lake Louise, Banff Springs, Drake Hotel in Chicago, St Regis in New York, Brown Palace in Denver.

I love that cute Nate! He has some great decorating ideas. My favorite place was a week at the Balsalms, a resort hotel in Dixville Notch, NH. Your meals come with the room rate and the food was not to be believed. I bet I gained 10 pounds. Unfortunately, I was working a trade show so I didn't get to take advantage of a lot of the stuff they have to do there.

I would love to stay at the Palmer House in Chicago. It's so old and elegant.
