Tip of the Day: Gift Wrap Storage

Hey, maybe we can start a thread for tips to help organize and make life easier. Who ever has a tip would title their post Tip of the Day: and then add the name of the tip as in my case Gift Wrap Storage

My new year resolution was "A place for everything, and everything in its place. As such, I have been cleaning closets and trying to get super organized (will that actually happen? I doubt it, but I'll make a valiant effort. LOL).

Between the after Christmas price cuts, school fundraisers and the oops, now I need gift wrap for the neighbor's dogs birthday party, I have many, many rolls of gift wrap.

I've tried a number of approaches for storage and all fall short of really helping...until now.

I took a garment bag I bought for a buck at a dollar store, filled it with 15 rolls of various wrapping paper rolls, zipped it up and hung it in a closet. Now all my wrap is all in once place, within reach and dust free.

Next I'm getting a shoe holder with all the pockets to store tape, ribbon, scissors and bows.

That's a pretty good idea! I have mine in an under the bed storage box. If I have rolls of various sizes (diameter), I try to slide them inside each other to save space. I also try to buy solid red/silver to use double duty for either Christmas or birthdays/anniversary.

Our bed is so low that the only thing we can store there is a large, thin board that we use to wrap stuff on.

We're planning a closet -- typical hall closet size -- that'll have a lock instead of a doorknob; thus, it'll be accessible only to me and my husband. This closet'll have shelves top to bottom, and maybe basket type shelves on the inside of the door for bows, ribbons and so forth. The closet will serve a couple purposes: - gun safe - purchased-ahead gifts - gift wrap - a small amount of cash that we keep on hand As for buying ahead, I do pretty well with it. It's rare that I buy something that just sits around forever and ends up at Goodwill. When I wrap things, I just do basic wrap and use a sticky note to remind me what the item is. I add the bow at the last minute so that I can stack boxes without messing up th wrappers. I like the idea of putting your gift wrap items near the dining room. Practical and efficient.

Two adults here, as well. Wasted food is the most expensive food you purchase, so I do careful meal plans to help reduce that "forgotten" something-'er-other, especially in the crisper drawer. I dehydrate, freeze, or vacuum seal with a FoodSaver for longer storage. Instead of waiting for the celery go go limp, I'll dehydrate a portion of it. Works great in soups, casseroles, etc. I also dry the celery leaves. Can't get all those mushrooms used? Slice and dehydrate them. I make entire soup mixes with a wide variety of dehydrated foods. We eat dehydrated zucchini as a substitute for potato chips. Hard cheese keeps longer in FoodSaver bags. When grapes are on sale, I'll stock up and freeze them in FoodSaver bags. I like the green bags for bananas, as well as freezing or dehydrating bananas when I can get a deal on them. FoodSaver canisters are great for leaf lettuce and fruit in the refrigerator. They keep much longer when vacuum-sealed. When potatoes are buy a 5# bag - get one free, I make them into mashed potatoes and freeze them in dollops and vacuum seal the dollops in FoodSaver bags. Otherwise, we'd never be able to use 5#, let alone 10#... I also cook and mash sweet potatoes and dehydrate them on the fruit roll-up trays. When crispy-dry, I run them through the blender and make sweet potato powder. Reconstitutes to make mashed sweet potatoes by adding hot water. I do the same thing with tomatoes for tomato powder. Reconstitute it with water for making pizza sauce, etc. It's amazing how many tomatoes you can get in a quart jar when you dehydrate them, and even MORE when you make tomato powder. Ripe fruit can be made into fruit roll-ups. You can dehyarate yogurt. I even dehydrate lean cooked meat cut into 1/2-inch cubes. After they are dry, I package it in FoodSaver bags and stick it in the freezer. Make sure your refrigerator is 40Â°F, or colder, and your freezer is 0Â°F or colder. If you use curling ribbon, I think the larger spools (the kind used by balloon places) are your best bet--they cost several dollars to buy, but contain virtually a lifetime supply. I've got several different spools of different colors, have been using them for many many years, and I don't think I've ever used one up. Check for the little independent places--we have an independent dollar store that has great gift wrap, ribbon, etc. Theres another place thats only open about 4 days a week, that sells artificial flowers, paper/party goods, and whatever other odd lots of things they get their hands on--they have an entire aisle of ribbon by the yard at unbelievable prices. I think, if you look hard enough, you can find little places like that. Lots of time, rather than waste money on gift wrap and ribbo that will jsut be tossed after the gift is opened, I make fabric tote bags. Especially when I'm giving an afgan or child's quilt. That way the bag can be used over and over. For the same reason, when I'm using paper wrap, I lean toward paper gift bags--most people save them to reuse, so I figure they're much more worth the price than throw-away wrapping paper. Can't recall the last time I actually wrapped a gift with paper and scotch tape, actually.

Thanks for all the great ideas and resources! As with many projects, I think I need to think more about this. Right now Christmas wrapping paper is stored in a plastic upright bin, and holiday ribbon, labels, tape and sharpies are in one of those stackable set of small bins that latch together. Holiday gift bags, boxes, envelopes, and miscellaneous supplies like gift card boxes are in a separate bin. Holiday bows in their own box. All that is stored in my loft , each box numbered according to my master list of holiday supplies, taken down each holiday season and returned after the holidays are over for another year of storage. Birthday and general wrapping paper consists of a few rolls that are stacked/shoved into a corner of my bedroom closet. I've got birthday/general bows, boxes, bags, etc. stored in an under bed bin in the same room. Since I am the last woman in America still sending holiday cards ;), those are stored right now in a drawer of my filing cabinet in our home office. Random birthday, sympathy, get well etc. card are in an accordion folder stuck in a corner of the same drawer. Tape and scissors are in various drawers in my kitchen and home office. need to give some thought to how and what exactly I want to organize in this new space. Hadn't really considered whether paper should be displayed on dowels or tucked into drawers, or whether a hutch and a flat table are a good combination etc. Had no idea Home Depot carried a Martha Stewart gift wrap storage line. Thinking maybe IKEA would be a resource since they seem to have a lot of modular storage type pieces. So this will be a fun mental puzzle with a decorating slant--hurray!

I love that idea, Jodi! I don't have the closet space (160-year-old house), but a garment bag would keep them protected in the barn or wherever. Thanks!

Eons ago when we lived in a 3 level townhouse, I wanted a place to store our luggage and Christmas decorations. Our entry level was an L shaped hallway with a door to the half basement, a door to the garage, the interior steps to the 1st floor, and a coat closet built into the wall under the stairs. I cut out the interior wall of the coat closet to gain access to the rest of the space under the stairs and it was perfect for storing luggage and boxes of holiday decorations. I hung a large decorative panel from the hardware store over the 4 feet tall hole in the drywall.

Great idea, Jodi. I always have way to many rolls of paper. I think I will check out the under the bed container. This is how I store alot of my fabric.. If I could get my garage cleaned out maybe a garment bag would be the way to go.. Hmm,,

I will have to think about some good tips to pass along.

Two great ideas, Jodi. I like the idea of posting a tip of the day, and I also like your wrapping idea. I have mine in a plastic container now and some of the rolls are just a bit too long for the lid to close. Thanks!!

Bigbaby, the longer rolls didn't fit into the suit length garment bag but did fit in my formal dress length bag. Unfortunately that bag wasn't see-thru so I'm going to wait until I can get my hands on a clear one for the longer rolls.

Another idea is to save the empty roll of gift wrap or at least a few and slice one up the side then you can snap that around a being used roll so it doesn't unroll on you A Paper towel empty works good too /

The garment bag is a good idea, and much cheaper then those gift wrap plastic tubs.

Your idea is great. I use one of those large plastic Rubbermaid containers for the rolls of gift wrap and I have room in my pantry. But a few years ago I finally realized that I just buy way too many rolls especially after Christmas when they're on sale. I like to wrap my presents and put them under the tree as part of the holiday decorations. So now I only buy solid color wrap and then decorate the packages with ribbons, ornaments and other little holiday decorations. I think it's a prettier look than the odd assortment of leftover paper that I always had. So now I've extended that principle to all my wrap- birthdays, anniversaries, weddings etc. I use an appropriate solid color and then get my thrills by using ornamental ribbons, silk flowers, ornate bows and other decorative items on the boxes.

I have an under the bed wrapping paper tote, which needs to be sorted out and the upright one. I got the under the bed one at a rummage sale and Cheryl gave the upright one to her Dad as he likes to wrap his presents. The garment bag is a good idea, but I would not have room in my closet for it. Oh the upright one is in his room right now as he is working on kids birthday gifts.

I think this tip of the day is an excellent idea and one I will look forward to! I also think your idea of the garment bag is great, you could hang it or store it anywhere. Maybe including a little bag with tape & scissors etc. would keep everything together nicely.

Brilliant! So many clever gift wrap storage ideas in one place.
Here's my idea: I recently decided to only use only one color paper or bag and one color embellishment. All my gifts, for any occasion, will have a signature look. I'm torn between white bags/paper or brown kraft bags/paper. Either of those 2 colors should always be available so I don't have to stock up, in the fear of running out of "my" color in the future. If I go with brown bags then I'll go with white embellishments. If I go with white bags I'll probaby go with red embellishments. Since I don't have any gift buying occasions coming up, I haven't started my new wrapping idea yet.

I'm really looking forward to the other tips.

If the trays that produce comes in are long enough, you could ask at the store, then store the rolls in them, then slip them under the bed.

You'd want to put an old sheet over the top to collect the dust.

The discount grocers put those trays and the cartons that food comes in, in several large boxes by the checkout so that folks can use them to pack their groceries.
