That's really awful. If this woman is hanging on to that much unpleasantness from high school at her age (old enough to have a son to communicate these things) she's just sick. Delete, unfriend, block, and ignore are the way to go. There are crazies out there; now you know she's one of them. Waste no more time on them.

What a horrible thing to have happen. I think you handled it appropriately, there was nothing else you could do really. I wouldn't take this too personally though. They are probably not very nice people and it is their problem not yours.

It is very much like the cyber bullying that goes on with teenagers. Cowards who have nothing better to do with their time.

Try to let it go and let Facebook deal with it. Keep copies of everything in case they bother you further. If police have to get involved you want to have a complete record of everything that was said and done by both you and them. I truly hope it doesn't come to that.

You did the right thing. Follow your gut in the future and only accept friend-requests from those who you truly want to be friends with.

Also; make a group called school or web or whatever; people you don't know in every day real life go into one. Go to your photo albums & block them from these groups.

I have 2 profile; one specifically for high school people & I don't post many photos on it.

You should forward her son's message to her and let her see what kind of person she has raised. That is mean and disgusting. I never ever accept a friend request from anyone I don't want seeing my photos and comments. Sometimes I wonder why we so willingly plaster personal stuff on the internet. I have found long lost friends via FB, so it has its uses. Anyway, I am very sorry that happened to you and that you were victimized by some sicko.

Truly horrible experience for you; I think you were just unlucky that this family is so toxic, you acted in good faith; at worse, the friend you accepted could have been just annoying and you could have blocked her.

This is what I was trying to add last night: I talked to someone who graduated with the woman and has had occasional contact. Apparently the teen is 16 and has "behavioral issues." The mother supposedly has had her hands full and at one point threatened to send the kid to live with his father. (She got pregnant with him when she was 16 or 17 and her and the father never married).

I also wanted to add that our paths never crossed in high school. No mean girl scenarios, no cat fights in the hallway. If she is harboring some sort of bizarre grudge from high school, I would have NO IDEA what it could pertain to.

Here's a thought: perhaps it was simply ( and viciously) a foolish prank by her son. Maybe he ( and buddies?) thought it would be fun to insult and outrage some adults. Maybe his mother knows nothing about it. I'm not on FB, but I like dedtired's idea of letting the mother know, if that's possible. I can imagine how shocked you were. So sorry!

My first thought was similar to leahcate's. What better way to add a little discomfort to mother's life than to insult her friends and imply that some of the comments came from mother. The woman's friends drop her like a hot potato and she had no idea why or the friends confront her and add more drama to her life.

leahcate and yogacat- yes, I am questioning whether the mother truly knows or not. Regardless if she knows about the message, I do believe she was gossiping about me in front of the kid. He would have been unable to see my pics unless he saw them through her profile. Plus, my profile pic (the only pic he could see) is a family photo of me, my husband and our toddler daughter! Not exactly the kind of photo a teen would see on his own and decide to send an incendiary message where he mentions my bre*sts. Seriously disturbing.

I'm sorry you just went through that. I agree you did the right thing and I'd go back through and edit your friends list. I'd also be sure to keep all correspondence.

Usually I lurk more than I comment but Tinycastles, the mother's account may have been hacked and it could appear that the note was sent from her son but actually was sent by someone else. I know of several friends whose accounts have been hacked recently and most have obscene or really disturbing messages being sent from their FB accounts but it is actually not them. So just some food for thought. Unfortunately, even with the tightest security, FB gets hacked often.

Just another viewpoint. Him seeing your photos could have been caused by an innocent action on her part. I never log out of FB. It's pretty much open in my browser the entire time my browser is open. I don't have young prying eyes in the house, but if I did they'd see everything (in which case I'd log out each time). Also, even easier is if she has FB on her mobile, he could have seen it that way. A lot of people I know don't bother to log out of mobile. And have gotten their accounts hacked as a joke. Sneaky siblings or friends secretly grab the phone, post something silly as a joke, and it's there on FB till the mobile owner discovers it on their page.

So it could easily be a scenario where she did not intentionally share her account access with him.

Maybe she should be told what he's up to, in a non-confrontational way. If you're not friends and will be blocking her anyway, nothing to lose and it might save her a lot of future embarrassment with other friends as well. As mentioned, maybe it's not you he was ultimately trying to hurt, but his mom. If she indeed has no involvement and no one tells her, she really has no clue he's doing it since the messages originate from his account.

FB has had a stint of hacks and they have been pornography, profanity laced posts, etc. -- that was just last week or the week the before. Can't remember.

Could very well be a hack - new activity on a stale account can make the account a target. Turning it over to FB might be the right answer.

I made the mistake of not protecting my 'friends' list. I have never let my LinkedIN contacts list public - not even to current contacts. Not sure why I wouldn't protect the FB list too but I spaced and made the mistake of leaving it open.

Long story short, a business arrangement ended badly and one of the starring nuckfuts involved used my list as a roster of sorts and called and/or emailed everyone on my list with bizarre, illiterate, incoherent rants. She even tried to 'friend' my friend's children and spouses (which REALLY freaked people out) because they didn't 'private' their lists, it was open season on their fb contacts too. I know several people reported her to fb and it stopped -- don't know why it stopped, but have to assume fb took care of it. But her delusional rantings wasted a lot of people's time, it was upsetting to them and they were genuinely concerned about her gaining access to family member's info/walls. All valid concerns because she demonstrated certifiable flat out raging crazy.

It's hard to be *out there* in social media but using whatever privacy options are available helps at least a little bit.

deborah, moonshadow, funcolors: Definitely not a hack. Too specific to be a hack. Trust me on that one. Without getting too in-depth or sounding arrogant, I grew up in a small town and my father has done quite well for himself with entrepreneurial business ventures. For some reason, his achieving the "American Dream" has really fueled jealous gossip and I have heard plenty of rumors about my family, my siblings, myself, etc. The message sent reflects this.

Well that stinks. :( Totally understand how FB can be used as a weapon. If anything could be a silver lining it would be that it's limited to just your inbox/wall and you can delete/block/unfriend.

I hope by now you have defriended her. It is very sad that there are so many sick people out there. It is only normalfor you to speculate. But, do you really want to confront this woman? You now know that the son has difficulties. That says it all.
Use this as a valuable lesson. Know that YOU had nothing to do with it except that you were kind enough let someone be your "friend".

You just never know . . .I teach online and had a request from a student for MONEY in an e-mail (not FB). I contacted the school, and they talked to her. Supposedly her brother had gotten into her account and it was a "joke." She was so embarrassed (I guess?) she dropped the class.

anele :-0 wow! Interestingly, that's how my fb attack ended as well. Once my attacker realized what an ass she made of herself, and instead of 'getting people on her side' the very opposite happened, she then started claiming that I hacked her email and her fb account and "it wasn't really her" that was responsible.

Hacking someone's email or fb or any online account is a criminal act, it's a second or third-degree felony depending on circumstance.

Nothing to *joke* about and not an accusation to carelessly or casually lob at someone.

I can't even believe this person would say it was YOU who did it. I guess we can see how her son got this way. Had it been my son, I would have been apologizing from now until forever!
