HVAC replacement advice

We are replacing our old failed HVAC/furnace units. In So California @ zone 9; presently have return air ducts in crawlspace but with supply ducts in attic.

1 contractor suggested putting furnace/AC and all ducts in attic as way to avoid crawlspace issues and achieve best return air balance----no "trunk and branch ducting". Crawlspace is very tight for ducting.

It seems like a poor choice for efficiency of temperature differences between ducts and attic temp, puts condensate above ceilings and requires lots of labor to build and place new plenum boxes above, requires repositioning of gas and electrical, condensate drain, new return ventings in house, etc.

Single story house with insulated attic.

Would like to hear any strategy advice about keeping crawl space return ducts vs everything moving above.

Appreciate any feed back to aid in considering best strategy prior to selecting equipment.
