Cat mom, they are very snug. My glasses don't fit under them, but I find I can chop okay and not lose a finger even without my glasses. ;)

Onion goggles are probably my FAVORITE non-appliance in my kitchen! I've got the pink ones and people make fun of me every time I put them on but they can laugh all they want - at least I'm no longer crying! I love those things and give them as gifts all the time!

I just cut onions right next to the stove with the hood on. Sucks the fumes right out, no crying required.

I've had the Onion Goggles for a couple of years now. I learned about them from Cooks Illustrated magazine. They are fantastic. I am the type of person so sensitive to onions, that when I order a burger at a restaurant, I have to make sure they leave off the typical onion garnish, or I'll start tearing up. The Onion Goggles work! I am not sure if there are differences among brands, but I have the RSVP brand, and I can now chop onions all I want. I just looked on Amazon, and now RSVP makes them in white, red, pink and brown; when I bought them they only came in black, so have fun with them!

^^ I wear contacts and have no troubles with onions at all. When I wear my glasses, my eyes water. They should make "Onion Contacts". Won't look as silly.... although I guess the goggles are easier to put on.

Sharpen your knife so it cuts cleaner.

A dull knife crushes the cells as you cut and makes the problem much worse.

I was intrigued when I first saw onion goggles. Then I realized that I could use swim goggles, of which I have many pairs lying around, to perform the same function. They work perfectly since they are essentially the same concept, and I didn't have to buy a new "gadget."

I'm wondering, do they help when working with jalepenos? Anyone know? We get choked up, teared up, stopped up, jalepenos are our enemy, but we love them so. Probably work with them several times a week.

Just wondered if anyone had tried them when chopping jalepenos, or any kind of pepper for that matter. :)

My Ethiopian daughter tucks a piece of onion skin behind her ear while cutting onions and swears it keeps the tears away. I haven't had so much luck with that! ;o) I'll have to check into the goggles!

Like you, advertguy2, I never had issues with onions until I switched from contacts to glasses full time. Pity onion goggles don't come with prescription lenses. ;-) I do as cheifneil suggested, I cut onions next to the vent with it turned on. Also, if I have more prep to do, I store chopped onions in the fridge, safely out of range of my nose and eyes. It's not quite as foolproof as my contacts were but it helps enough.

My Rx is too high for me to chop onions (or do anything!) in the kitchen (well, almost anything :-) ) without my regular glasses......

Great idea! I'll have to get my old ski goggles out and see if they'll save me the $$. Love the cow wearing the glasses!

There are some great ideas on this thread. I like to picture us all in our ski goggles, with a swirl of onion behind one ear.

OMG - love the cow! I learned two things long ago, like brickeyee, a really sharp knife is important but also hold an unlit wooden match between your teeth and breathe through your mough not your nose. The unlit end of the match absorbs the odor. I never cry... but DH laughs at me!

At first I thought you said, "lit match," and thought, that's one brave woman.

Your husband may laugh, but your unlit match is SO much classier than the entire piece of bread I used to hold in my mouth for the same reason!

for susied3, yes, they work with chile like jalapeno, green chile, chipotle. another benefit for chile chopping is you can't forget and touch your eye with your chile-contaminated hand! like stei7141, I use my old swim goggles.

hm, chile makes me cough too, so maybe I need to go for the whole "gas mask" look lol...

With four young swimmers in my house, I have plenty of swim goggles so I've always just kept a pair in my kitchen cabinet and used those. I did hear a tip once that by keeping the onion in the fridge, it helps prevent the sulfenic acid in them (which is what makes you cry)from traveling through the air to your eyes. They need to be in the fridge for about an hour or in the freezer for 15 minutes. I always forget to put them in the fridge/freezer so I just use my goggles!

If chilies make you cough (habaneros do sort of get to me) under the hood is a great place to chop.

I have used ski goggles before. (They worked fine, but my dog freaked out when he saw me.)
