Island Range Ventilation Question

I am putting a 36" Wolf dual fuel in my island (G shaped kitchen). I am considering a 42" island hood with an external blower that is rated 1500CFM. Will this be terribly noisy? I am finding all of this info on ventilation rather confusing--however, I do know that I need a strong ventilation system.

Why don't you call Wolf's customer service line and they can tell you what size the stove requires. They have answered many questions for me.

there are so many variants with noise levels - How it is ducted, construction of your home (plaster is quieter than sheetrok) etc.... The same vent in another persons home will sound different

That said - you are on the right path for getting good ventilation - I'd rather have a little noise for short period than have lingering smells and grease build up on my cabs/walls/fabrics
Best thing to do is find an appliance dealer that has this vent hooked up & go see/hear it on site, knowing it will sound a bit different in your application.

I have a Zephyr - many speeds - yes it's noisy @ high speed, but I only use that for short bursts

I'm actually wondering the same thing. I currently have a very old Jenn Air downdraft cooktop on an interior wall, so the ductwork is already in place. For budget reasons, we don't want to change the layout of our kitchen too drastically (relocating plumbing, etc.). I thought I was ok with a OTR microwave with a recirculating hood, but now I'm wondering if I should reconsider a downdraft setup. Does anyone have a new Jenn Air downdraft range? Does the venting take up space behind the range, or could it stand on its own? I'm considering a gas slide-in model, but I can't figure out where the space for the venting needs to be. Also, are Jenn Air ranges any good, or are they just overpriced niche proucts? I'm also considering a telescoping vent by Dacor, but I can't figure out if it can be installed behind a slide-in range or if it can only be installed behind a cooktop. Basically, I want to preserve the storage space under the cooktop, and I'm wondering if that's possible.

Hi. We do A LOT of entertaining in our kitchen which is antique white along with stainless appliances. We don't deep fry although we grill, sear, sautÃÂ©, and wok fry quite a bit. I think the cleaning part would be tough if we hadn't done our hood in stainless as even the outside does get a bit oily after a few weeks - the stainless extends down the back of our range as we have the heat lamps and warming shelves. Also we made the hood a few inches wider than our 36" range and got the most powerful fan we could! With the stainless 48" fridge and the polished nickel hanging pendants over the island in our kitchen the Stainless hood strikes a nice balance. The rest of the kitchen has crackled/glazed subway tile as the backsplash. We thought about doing the panels that match the cabinets and it just seemed like too much white as well, although that concern was secondary to the cleaning. The side if the cabinets adjacent to/facing the range are hard to clean and I would imagine at some point the finish will dull due to cleaning.

Electric to Gas Range and Ventilation/Hood Question

We did this. Our 1950s electric range had no ventilation above it (for ~75 years mind you since our house was built in 1939). We converted from oil to natural gas and are currently in the midst of a partial renovation which includes adding an above range hood for our new gas range. We don't have an upstairs so the ventilation is going through the roof. We lost some cabinet space. Didn't want a micro above it. People love their induction cooktops but I am too primal apparently and IMHO it had certain limitations for me regarding canning, so gas was the winner in the end.

Unlike 'most' gas furnaces, gas ranges don't require venting, they burn relatively clean, you can see the stove top flames, and even the oven is generally not used for more than a couple hours and would only present a danger if poorly adjusted and used as a heater. The fear is carbon monoxide from a poorly adjusted burner. Although natural gas is a clean burning fossil fuel, it may have contaminates that don't get burned off.--see this link Ventilation is used to remove heat, smoke, steam and grease- and by products of burning gas (mostly steam and carbon dioxide)if it's burning clean- This depends on how and what you cook. High heat, frying, greasy bacon, meats etc will create smoke that may bother you or your guests, steam up your windows,leave grease on your cabinets, and leave odors behind for days ... of course burnt food isn't fun either.. etc.

If you do not have a grill on your stove you should not need that many CFM. Take a look at the fantech web site. I have the FKD 10XL and it is remarkably quiet even at high speed but it does have a silencer/muffler.

You are on the right path for quiet with an external blower. If you have the room, add a fantech silencer. I would also recommend a hood with baffles in lieu of mesh based on our experiences. You can find quite a bit of information in the appliance forum

You're also on the right track with a powerful & wider hood in an island application. There is a greater possibility of grease/steam/smoke/heat drift with an island-installed (or peninsula) range than one installed against a wall.

Definitely look into an external blower, it will help with the noise. But, accept the fact that a fan is a fan, if it's soundless it probably isn't doing its job!
