Nope, Polly wrote that her dtr missed school to atend the show. I have never, ever heard of taking kids out of school without a permission slip signed by the parent before each and every outing, even to the local fire station! Even high school students are required to have signed slips on file or they get left behind in the school library, never mind first graders!

And all schools, clubs or teams we have ever participated in have asked permission to publish any photos/video of each child. We have the child of an actor/actress couple in our class and I'm sure they wouldn't want their kid/school to be broadcast without permission.

No! She saw a tape! The teacher brought back the tape of the segment she filmed with Dr. Oz!

Oh, and our permission slips have to be signed by both parents, unless someone has sole custody on file.

It still sounds wrong. Here it is:

Teacher was out Wednesday. She was not ill. She went to a taping of the Dr. Oz show. Teacher will be on the show with him doing a cooking segment emphasizing the importance of healthy eating habits in children.

Letter went home with child Friday.

Saturday crazy nor'easter strikes and we get sporadic power outages and trees down in our yard. I never bother to open her backpack the entire weekend.

It is a cute story, but there is a lesson here - look how many of us, myself included, misunderstood what was clearly written.

Polly, I'm sorry, I'm just a detail oriented mother, who likes to test too many paint colors for just that "perfect" hue of beige. I guess most of us here are detail oriented and involved parents. Lots of budget issues in schools and I just wanted to make sure that informing parents wasn't one of the budget cuts! I guess it was one of those "you had to be there moments" :-)

Thank you graywings. I was starting to doubt myself, but I kept going back and re-reading my OP, and I thought it was pretty clear. Although I can see how if you read it quickly it would be misinterpreted.

What I don't understand are some of the previous posts. Why am I being called on the carpet like I'm lying about it and making it up or something? Another thread directed towards me has even started, and IMO the post is very condescending. I am not even going to respond, because I am pretty irritated by it.

I thought my post was clear. I thought it was really cool my daughter's teacher will be on the Dr. Oz show. She is a fantastic teacher who truly cares about the well being of all children. I thought it was adorable how my daughter so non-chalantly starting telling me about it and I thought I'd share. I feel like every time I post on this board there is someone who chimes in and questions my motive in doing so. I just don't get it.

Thanks for posting Polly! And you WERE clear. I understood exactly what you meant and I think it's awesome that our kids are learning healthier eating and cooking habits. I guess I'll have to get into my daughter's Halloween candy AFTER she falls asleep so as to not set a bad example! :)

It is a cute story, and I will admit that I was a bit confused on first read. Just like Polly was a bit confused when DD told her the story, before the details were cleared up!

Don't let it bug you, Polly. It doesn't reflect on you at all, but if you constantly have to battle to get your sweet little story across, it can be tiring.

I could understand if you didn't feel like posting again. Which would be too bad, because I thought your story was cool : ).

"She" was the teacher, not the DD in the note. This was what the note said and should be directed to the teacher, not Polly. Any of us could have been confused by this.
Forget Sherman's post. I don't get the need for anything negative regarding a cute conversation with one's child. She was obviously very astute regarding the learning experience. And pretty proud of her teacher, even if it didn't come out with a correct explanation. A great conversation evolved from this between mom and child.

Polly, I skim when I read so the details of your post weren't completely clear to me. I could tell that your daughter was truly excited by what happened and I enjoyed reading about it.

Don't let the fact that you can't choose the people you share your posts with stop you from using this site. For some reason that are people who feel the need to call people out or nit pick or just be unkind in general. But there are also plenty of kind, thoughtful, funny, helpful people too.

What a great way for your DD to have the "eating/cooking well" ideas presented to her. I am sure she thought it very cool that her teacher was at the taping, but to actually cook with Dr. Oz, well that's just amazing to kids your DD's age. My own DD was the same way. More years than not in elementary, she had a female teacher. Well, whatever the female teacher said was gospel.

So happy that what/how we eat is starting to click with our kids. My own DD, didn't start to eat/cook only healthy foods if left to her own devices until well after high school, and probably most significantly after she spent a semester abroad. I've always cooked with an eye toward health, but seeing a completely different culture's approach, for some reason made a bigger difference than seeing it at home. Now DD complains if we don't have this or that healthy ingredient in the house when she wants to cook/eat.

I think that importance of what our kids see/learn OUTSIDE of our homes is really the point of your post? Our kids' mentors are unbelievably important, and it sounds like your DD's teacher is going above and beyond (like so many teachers do) in teaching her students life lessons as well as how to read and write.

Sorry you're having a hard time here on GW. I really don't understand why the question of permission slips became so important. I think the point of your post was that your DD is learning healthy eating habits. TBH, I've cut my time on GW significantly since many threads are trending toward the need for a saucer of milk. I formerly checked in regularly to at least read the threads. I guess I am not alone.

That was very clear to me! Nowhere there did it say the child missed school, or that the child cooked. It's all very evident to anyone who takes the time to read what Polly wrote, so I don't understand why anyone would feel it necessary to question Polly's interpretation of the incident or ask about permission slips.

Darling story, Polly, and I was amazed at how much information from the tape that your young daughter retained - remembering how to cook the tomatoes so they could be peeled, and info about the food pyramid. Just priceless. Thanks for sharing!

An update regarding the taping of the show came home in my daughter's back pack yesterday. I worked the overnight and saw it this morning.

The Dr. Oz show that my daughter's TEACHER attended will air Monday November 7th. I am looking forward to watching with my daughter.

And to respond to some of the confusion. Why would I not know my 7 year old daughter missed school? If she had missed school she would be home with me. I wouldn't be receiving a letter from the teacher stating that fact. That would be why I would think it were obvious the teacher missed school and not my daughter. In the story my daughter saw Dr. Oz on tape. I really thought that was clear.

Thank you for all of your kind words. I am by no means a frequent poster, but on occasion when I do post the same thing happens. I suppose that when you put yourself out there, it's fair game. But in this instance, it was uncalled for and completely unnecessary. After reading all the posts this morning, I see many of you agree, and I thank you.

I did misread your post at first, but looking back at it, I understand now. I am very active in my son's school, it baffles me, when I run across a parent (just happened the other day) doesn't know their child has music and P.E. on alternate days. I'm like, "What?" Not a big deal, but some parents are definately not in tune with their kids day.

I rarely post much anymore either, because of the way people pick you apart on here, and I see a certain few who do it to others, so unless I just have "wild hair" and feel like posting, I take the chance! Too much stress in our lives anyway!

In re-reading my post, I hope you didn't think I thought you were like the parent I was talking about! It didn't come out like I wanted it too! That is one reason I don't post much either, I *think* others can read my mind-HA! I rarely open my son's backpack from Friday, until Sunday night, so you are better than me. Weekends are just so busy, and we have ONE child!

I knew what you meant. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who rarely open's their children's backpacks over the weekend. Throw my FT job (I was actually at the hospital all day Saturday) and a crazy October nor-easter into the mix- and there's just no shot! Haha ;)

Ask me how I keep it all straight? I have a command center in my kitchen that clearly states what days my kids have gym, dance, soccer, cooking class, library etc. Otherwise my kids would be going to soccer in tap shoes- haha!!

7 years old ... such a precious age! I have a niece and nephews who are (let me see if I can get this right - I can barely recall how old I am some days!) 6, 8, and 9. Some of the things they come up with in converation are just priceless! Your daughter sounds like a real doll, and I hope she enjoys seeing her teacher on the Dr. Oz show! Thank you all who agreed and enjoyed my cute little story. In my mind my 7 year old will always be the tutu wearing little toddler, but she is growing up, and the conversations have evolved. I was actually quite happy that she is interested in eating healthy, as it has now come from her teacher and Dr. Oz.

And can I just say for the record....I find it very unfortunate that regular posters, myself included, are now hesitant to post because of exactly what happened here on this thread. I also find it disheartening that rather than apologize for a simple mistake one will take unnecessary jabs to defend themselves. FOR GOODNESS SAKES this is not a hot topics forum or political forum it's the CONVERSATIONS side of a decorating forum. Just had a parent-teacher conference. Guess What? My daughter never actually saw Dr. Oz on tape, she saw a tape about healthful eating and when the teacher explained to the kids that she will be on the Dr. Oz show discussing the topic, she thought she had just watched the Dr. Oz show. So...the moral of this thread....misunderstandings happen ALL the time!

Polly, it sounds like your daughter has a great teacher who has made learning exciting to her students. Her appearance on the tv show is a great opportunity to promote healthy eating to her class. Polly, it is a very cute story and I had fun picturing your DD carrying on such a "grown-up" conversation! They do grow up way too quickly (love the comment about her always being the toddler in the tutu), but these moments are treasures.

It's a pronoun thing...

You were talking about your daughter this and your daughter that... Then the sentence about missing school for the Dr. Oz taping was explicit that the teacher had sent a letter, but not about 'which she' it was who had missed school. (If my kid had missed school, I'd certainly expect a letter from the teacher.)

You certainly weren't incorrect in your language use. But the readers who misunderstood and thought the 'she' referred to your daughter (the 'she' in all of the previous sentences) weren't being unreasonable either.

It's a personal pet peeve -- using pronouns like 'he' or 'she' when it's ambiguous which he or she they might be referring to. And it's been the cause of so many (mostly funny) misunderstandings between my husband and me. Now one of my regular lines (that my kids now use as well) is "he who?"

Hahaha! I so relate to this, as this is also the source of misunderstandings with my DH. Of course, there's also his inability to speak in complete sentences at times, such as the other morning when (on the subject of a gallon of paint) he uttered: "Getting this?" Did that mean he was asking if I'm getting it or he's getting it, or we're getting it? Of course, when I suggested he speak in a complete sentence he got a little huffy with me. Sorry, but I can't read minds before my second cup of coffee. ;-)

I must admit I too thought the "she" who went to the show was your daughter, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment of your story. And when posters questioned the lack of a permission slip to go on a trip, I didn't pay too much attention. But then...OMG, the attacks. Totally out of line. Asking for clarification is okay, attacking the OP is not.

I will admit I'm more of a general idea person, and as someone pointed out, decorators are more detail oriented. I got the general idea: this was a cherished moment with your daughter and you were amazed at her intellect, which you should be. (BTW, I think you have a creative, high level thinker on your hands, so make sure you are stashing the cash for her college education!)

I just don't get the need to attack you because of the way you constructed the sentence containing the pronoun "she". Yes, detailed oriented folks find that irritating, but I just wish posters would have responded in the spirit in which the thread was begun. When you wrote it, you knew what you meant, and were not spending hours editing it for perfection. Most of us would have written it the same way you did.

Polly, give your daughter a hug for me, and tell her that someone out there in cyberworld thinks she is a great kid now and has a fantastic future ahead of her. You must be so proud of her!
