any bucks county soapstoners out there- any tips?

Hi, folks, we're getting close to scheduling our templating for our new soapstone countertops. We're workign with Bucks County and just wondered if anyone who has worked with them can share any learnings or tips that you can share, things you wish you had known ahead of time etc

Nothing to say really except Bucks County Soapstone was one of the few flawless interactions in a renovation plagued by problems.

I would use them again in one second.

Kim, I'm not one of your classmates but I graduated from the Mont-Bucks classes in January 2000. It took me about an hour to get to Creamery for classes. I took the turnpike. I'm only about 2 miles from the turnpike. I'm sure I'll meet you soon. I'll be working the MG's Q & A booth at the Grange Fair on August 18th starting at 2:30. Some of my classmates were in the same situation as you and Trish. They lived closer to another counties office and class facilities. It happens all the time. But you do have to attend the classes in your county and only take makeup classes in other counties. Kim, You'll also see the difference between the two counties. Unless they've changed it, Montgomery County trainees paid for their classes. We just had to pay for our manual and badges. Believe there was also a difference in volunteer hours. So watch when you talking to other trainees because the counties have different rules/guidelines. Billie

any tips for keeping cats out of blinds?

It sounds like they just want to get up on the windowsill so they can look outside. Cats won't usually jump onto a surface unless they have space to land, so fill the windowsill area with something (cardboard boxes, bags of sugar, books, whatever). Or put something over the window so they can't see out, like that "stained glass" or frosted adhesive-backed plastic. Then they'll have no reason to jump up there. You could also try taping sheets of flimsy cardboard to the windowsills, so that several inches of cardboard hangs over into the room. They will jump onto the cardboard, it will bend, and they will fall to the floor (unharmed). After a few tries they'll give up.

Soapstone Apron Sink Issues - Any out there?

I am the shop foreman for a soapstone and slate fabrication company and we build lots of soapstone(and slate for that matter) sinks at our facility. We build ours with rabbet and dado construction and slope the bottom of the sink so it drains properly. We are a custom shop, so we build whatever size and style of sink a customer wants. Our most common sinks are straight farm front sinks, although we have been getting more and more orders for Philadelphia front sinks. Philly front is a pitched front sink with the top of the sink front sticking out 2 inches farther than the bottom of the front. Our primary soapstone source is Green Mountain Soapstone, but we have a couple of other varieties of soapstone as well. Our sinks are water tested for a minimum of 24 hours and are guaranteed for life. I've been with our company for 2 years and have seen only 1 sink fail. A trim carpenter or someone else working on the house the sink was in stood inside the sink and cracked the bottom and front of the sink. I was going provide a link for our company, but I read a warning about companies doing that(they consider it advertising). So, I'll just say that there are companies out there that will ship a sink anywhere in the country. If you do an internet search, you will find someone. If you choose to build your own,(my boss would be angry about this one) you could let me know and I could try to give you step by step instructions for building one.

I only wish I had visited the shop to pick out my extras. The shop is so amazing-I definitely could not have put everything in my budget. My daughter broke her arm the day I was supposed to visit and I ended up doing everything over the phone so I could stay on schedule. I wish I had chosen the solid sink with the bowed front and medallion (My mom just got that) and I wish I had seen the Franklin edge in person. Somehow I would have fit that into the budget, but probably not the sink.

You don't need any tips. They run a flawless operation there, all the way from from the computer template process to the invisible seams at the install. Plus they installed my counters only 48 hours after the template (I live several hours away too.)

I will be heading out there this summer to see the shop/pick out a slab and I am very excited and reassured by everything I read about them.

I'm curious though--what exactly is the upcharge for the Franklin edge (is this the edge that is hand-finished to look like it has been there forever? That's what I want!)? I do know that the sink carved out of a solid block is pricier than the one pieced together, but do things like having it bow out and that little dip in the front cost extra too?

i think the franklin edge is about $400 extra; we're heading that way but probably not the sink... (have to draw the line somewhere :)

i really enjoy the shop, talking with scott, feeling the stone, visitng the fabrication process. I also very much like that they pay attention to how their waste water is handled, their environment etc. Truly an impressive operation.

What you see on the website is what you see in person, plus the warmth of the people and the craftmanship. I cannot wait to have them template and ins tall. We're only about 45 minutes away.
